Relationship Note on Peregrine

Princess Peregrine Grayson. What can I write of the princess? I do not know her well. In truth I've met her once. What I did glean from that first meeting however? She is a Prodigal; some sort of chieftain's daughter of a formerly Abandoned tribe whom was married to a Grayson prince. Likely in order to secure their loyalty and seal the agreement of peace. Beneath her rustic demeanor, there is a certain nobility. Not in the sense of an Arx noble dressed in their usual plethora of silks, but much more akin to those of House Redrain that I've come to know and respect. A nobility of heart for the basic dignity of existence.

Pair this with the fact that the princess, by all appearances, is quite the formidable warrior? She came to dinner armed, though toting a peace-bonded weapon. A weapon which I eventually requested that the Marquessa of the House ask to be unbound. She's a princess that I find myself capable of quickly having respect. While her spoken word may be a little rustic and difficult to follow at times, the intent behind those words speak a great deal to me: always be prepared. She understands it - constant vigilance. I understand her and I believe she understands me, at least on that most basic of principles.

Relationship Note on Reese

I've heard through the gossips that Princess Reese may very well be getting married soon. This is wonderful news! She is a stalwart defender of...it often seems like everything. No cause is beneath her willingness to serve it and that is what the Compact needs. Even during my time as part of the King's Own, she would regularly visit with me in order to discuss the news of the day and to keep the knights of the Crown informed. To know that, amidst all of the turmoil of the day, that she is still looking to social obligations as an important detail of life and her own potential happiness? Great news indeed.

Further, such news can be found to be inspiring. To know that others are so confident that the siege will eventually break and that life will, someday, return to normal and they are planning accordingly for such? It is an inspirational sign that will grant hope for the future. Absolutely a bold move and one that I believe will ultimately result in uplifting the spirits of many.

I've also heard through the songs and poetry of another that she is referred to as Princess Ribbons. It is so very accurate. If it's not ribbons, then it's something pink. She definitely has a sense of style.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

Is it possible to be proud of someone that you can honestly say that you barely know? I feel something for Brother Aleksei of the Faith, whether it is pride or not I do not know. He has come far from what I first encountered him as and that is good. He will serve the Faith well, I think. Once upon a time, while I still operated within the oath of the King's Own, I reached out to Sir Aleksei and sought to grant him an invitation into the ranks.

He informed me that the Legate of Concepts himself had been attempting to guide him into service to the Faith. Of course he had.

So the pressure remained. The King's Own oh so direly wished to have his presence within their ranks. Enough so that I once entertained the notion of standing on my horse's back to stand outside his window, in order to be there to greet Sir Aleksei when he first awoke, in order to ask if he had heard the call to serve His Imperial Majesty, King Alaric Grayson IV. To swear off familial connections, pursuits of power, and so much more. To swear loyalty to only the Crown.

He chose the less extreme of options it would seem and joined the Faith.

Father Orazio and I work well together, we've always known this.

Recently I attempted to sing along with many other voices during an event held by the Marquessa of House Deepwood. Following that attempt at raising my voice up in song, I've determined that it may be utilized as a weapon against those who seek to destroy our fair Compact. It truly was bad. Another example of how one should stick to what they're good at and specialize.

I imagine it was akin to the sound of two cats with their tails tied together, thrown into a burlap sack, tied off, and given a good shaking. Then tossed into a bucket of water. In freezing temperatures. With baying hounds all around. It was bad.

Relationship Note on Calarian

A Grayson prince who has recently arrived within Arx. Reportedly brought a substantial number of Abandoned with him. I assume of course that they chose to bend the knee and become Prodigal. He informed me that his arrival preceded the siege by only a short period of time. I hope that he remains safe at the very least. Arx is a wonderful place this time of year, but it currently has a few uncouth visitors who should rightly be summarily sent back northward. Preferably in some nice sealed jars with a politely worded note to inform those far, far to the north bring closure to their aggression. Ideally these sealed jars bearing the Bringer ashes would be militarized in some manner.

I digress, of course. The prince showed ample respect for my service to the Crown, which I of course appreciate it. It was a sacrifice made. Even if it was a necessary sacrifice. Time moves forward though and here we are now. I'll say a prayer to the gods on the prince's behalf and encourage them to ensure his safety. Or at least put appropriate parties in place at the right time to ensure that he remains safe.

I have often wondered whether the Vellichoran scribes operate with a skeleton crew throughout much of the week, but reinforce their numbers every seven days to handle the dramatic influx of journal deliveries. I will have to make a few inquiries to appease my curiosity.

P.S. Future reader in decades or centuries ahead, do not believe that the Vellichoran scribes were actually skeletons. It is a figure of speech. Thank you.

Relationship Note on Tikva

Lady Tikva possesses a youthful energy that is refreshing during a siege. No doubt that energy is what gives her the motivation to perform the duties which she does. She cares a great deal and finds the tales of others refreshing, which in many cases I would find to be intrusive and altogether unwelcome. When she asks however it seems out of genuine curiosity rather than some attempt at gathering information for her own uses. I look forward to learning more of her and the Riven's in general. Aside from her personality she is apparently a scout of some sort, which is a decidedly dangerous role from a military standpoint due to so often being separate of a larger military force and often rather close to, or even behind, enemy lines.

I'll pray to the gods for her continued safety.

Relationship Note on Samantha

The Marquessa of House Deepwood has given me a great honor in providing me with the means to wage war on behalf of the Compact. So before I march off to aid in the defense of the Seawatch Gate, it should be noted that I thank her for her generosity and aid in providing me the means to ensure that I can perform to the best of my ability on the field of battle. She has my thanks and I will make sure that her property is returned to her House promptly upon it no longer being a necessity that I possess it.

House Deepwood has my thanks.

I've received a number of letters as of late. It is reassuring to have so many hold you in their thoughts. I try to send some form of thanks and explanations to those whom I receive letters from, but with the siege already upon us, I fear I can not always take the opportunity to write back. I am thankful to each and every individual who has reached out to me since my departure from the King's Own to ensure that my basic needs are met, I am properly kitted out for the fight to come, and prepared to do my part to fight alongside the people of my home. Something I would not have been able to do had I remained in service to the King's Own. This is where I need to be.

When life presents an obstacle: overcome and press forward.

We'll survive this. I'm confident in that. It's our only option. There are no deviating paths or forks in the road. It is a direct march forward. So frequently we look into history and regard the heroes of the past as inspiration. Rarely we look to the world around ourselves in this very moment and come to recognize that we have our own heroes among us. It is our time to make our mark on history, so that in a few hundred years, the people of the day will look back to the heroes who saved the world. Whether it was the Mercy who kept warriors in the fight by mending their wounds, the adept General whom directed the maneuvers, or the unstoppable warrior on the front line. We've got this.

The past few weeks, I have slept in a chair a great deal. I have slept, dozed, napped, or snoozed while staying within the presence of the king. Before that a bed within a tower that could only be described as motivational. It motivated you to get out of it and get the day going, for the sake of your back. Before that a bunk within that same tower that was likely more comfortable than the bed, but with the drawback of it possessing someone by the name of Sir Wiegraf who slept above you and snored profusely, while remaining unapologetic about it. He couldn't help it, of course, but it's the principle.

In my lifetime I was fortunate enough to see the sword pass from one Lord Commander to another, not once, but twice. The ceremonies were peaceful, which is a rarity for the sword. It often transitions only when the wielder falls. These truly are strange times that we live.

It has been a long and strange two years. Life changing in every way. Then, when I least expected it, it all changed again. Now it is time to pick up the pieces and sort myself out. When life presents an obstacle: overcome and press forward.

Today, I awaken in a new bed. It is a familiar bed, but it feels quite new. I'm lost. What do I do? Take breakfast while having my armor strapped on? It's unnecessary. Read the latest incident reports, if any? I don't have to do that; they don't exist. Do I go to watch over Alaric while he recovers? I can not. Do I go to the Square and watch a few of the knights conduct their training drills in the blustering wind and biting cold? I can sit in front of this hearth and stare at it instead. One would argue that it has been an upgrade. I've gone from staring at a wall while I can not sleep, to at least having the luxury of staring at a fire while I can't sleep.

Many changes of late with the king awakened. It has been both refreshing but also stressful; understandably so. I can say that those who watch over Alaric have done an admirable job, fulfilling their duties and being unwavering in their vigil. Something tells me that more changes lay over the horizon. Only time will tell and I will face them as I ever do. At least until I'm asked no longer to do so.

Gardening does sound relaxing. Or perhaps an orchard or vineyard to occupy my time, some day.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

Sir Aleksei Morgan. Talented swordsman, avoids blows as succinctly as responsibilities, and a friend who will go to great lengths to ensure your needs are met. He's not my own personal acquaintance, but he will harass you in order to ensure that his friend's needs are met, that much I've learned. While normally I would not concern myself with letting him down, under these particular circumstances I believe such a sentiment is warranted.

At least he cares enough to get involved. That's worth something, I imagine.

It would seem that the plan that the Legate and I hatched worked marvelously. Go us.

Relationship Note on Felicia

She has a peculiar relationship with doors. Even my own. I'll be mildly perturbed if she somehow manages to break a door that has stood for many Lord Commanders before myself. She began in her life in the Lower Borough and has climbed the ladder of life to serve with the King's Own. While she is relatively new to knighthood, she is the first that I actively recruited into the King's Own when I was First Captain to Lord Commander Leona Thrax. It is likely because of that fact that I wish to see her grow, as a knight and a person. She is a genuine success story, that no matter your origins within the Compact you can become something greater.

A very forward woman. I imagine she speaks precisely what is on her mind. It is refreshing, but sometimes moderation is important. Regardless, she can only improve with experience and a steady hand of guidance. I am proud to have her in service to His Majesty.

Uncertain of your marriage arrangements? Fearful of being married off to some lord or lady you can't stand? The King's Own can help! Give up family ties and vows of loyalty to all but the Crown and have the burden of choice lifted from your shoulders in order to pursue a life of service to a cause and purpose far greater than any lone soul.

The King's Own: making your marriage decisions for you since...we can't rightly remember, honestly. It's been a long time.

I imagine in two hundred years when the scholars look back to our journals to read of our thoughts during these dark times, they're going to be utterly confused. Understandably so during our oblations to Vellichor, so many entries are vague and disjointed. It's going to cause a lot of confusion for those who read in the future. Likely it will paint an adequate picture of the time we live for them and the fact that confusion runs rampant.

What isn't confusing? Service to His Imperial Majesty, King Alaric Grayson IV. It is a simple and straightforward duty, all things considered.

A desire can become a necessity without any becoming the wiser. A purpose is often unappreciated by those who can not fully embrace or understand it. I hope, someday, to be able to explain it.

To say that the man is impressive is an understatement.

Three opponents down in one melee, with nothing more than a lump of rust. A credit to the Knights of Solace, without doubt.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Throughout the duration that I've known the man he has proven himself to be prudent and attentive to the undercurrents of life. While neither of us would likely call the other a friend, purely due to the lack of frequent encounters, we seem to possess a basic respect and understanding of one another. I do believe he will lead his people well and they will thrive as a result.

Sometimes people take my advice and sometimes that makes them sane.
