The mind is essentially functional. As various thinkers throughout history have argued, the primary purpose of the mind is not to arrive at truth, but to enable us to pursue our ends, which are largely practical. We therefore believe many things not because they are true, but because they make us feel a certain way. And though truth is not determined by feeling, in one sense moral value is. Therefore, our judgments concerning the worth of things, big or little, depend on the feelings the things arouse in us.

Relationship Note on Yvon

A lack of self-knowledge is, perhaps, our greatest problem.

You have inspired me to begin the penning of a new series of discourses.

Arriving at the objective good requires exacting impartiality, something that, in many instances, is contrary to the interests of one's in-group relations.

While it is true that controlling propaganda is a vital tool, merely observing this misses another important point: controlling propaganda is only useful if you know how to use it. Part of this mastery comes with anticipating how your opponents will respond to your tactics. It is much like being an expert showman who can account for every aspect of his theater.

One cannot be loyal to two masters, or two of anything, for that matter. Inevitably, you will have to make a choice as to which, or whom, is primary.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

I understand that I have fallen behind on those crisp high fives that I owe you, dear heart...but next time I will not attempt to catch up by offering you any more than three at one time. Five was two too many. The palm of my hand is still red, and now that the stinging pain has subsided, I do believe it is sore and even slightly swollen.

Your hands are much larger than mine, and your arms possess much more strength. These delicate palms cannot possibly withstand repeated direct force from what may as well have been the rapid and successive strikes of a wild cat.

Mistake me not, though - I really do appreciate them.

(But I did have to dictate this).

Condemnation, for more people than those with gentle temperament may realize, can be a source a great pleasure. After all, it combines the delights of self righteousness with those of revenge, sadism, and the contemplation of discomfort or worse of other people. It requires no courage and is within the capacity of all to act upon.

It is a strange fact of the human condition that one often has mixed feelings about what one hates. We are drawn back over and over again to contemplate that which we supposedly detest and wish destroyed. As I have matured, and have had time upon which to reflect, I have determined that there is more than one reason for this.

To start, hatred can be an enjoyable emotion. One can garner a sense of moral superiority to whatever is hated as well as a possible source of purpose in life, if one takes up the cause against it in any practical way. But it can also be restful, even comforting to the mind, insofar as it relieves the necessity to think any further about other things in all their tiresome complexity. The latter, complexity, is apt to frighten or overwhelm us, to reduce us to a state of paralysis or powerlessness.

There are those who believe that every evil can have a good outcome if only we do just the right thing. Therefore, they impose such a biased perspective, as opposed to an unflinchingly disinterested one, on the very perception of difficult problems. In reality, however, there are many situations where only bad or indeed tragic outcomes are possible.

"Wisdom is learning what to overlook," a Scholar once wrote...and yet sometimes overlooking things only makes them worse.

Carelessly, I put Soteris in the crib with his brother, Verus. I thought the two would be pleased to nap together. How wrong I was. Verus began to yell, and Soteris to cry. I suppose out of territorial priorities. Damianos, however, insisted he nap with me. Nobody was happy until they all napped with me.

Even the Marquis.

It is important to think with proper detachment, and to reason in a context-specific fashion. One must always be willing to change their mind as one learns more in new circumstances.

My cousin, Marvella, wed a man of House Steelhart. By him she has three children, and though he was lost during the King's Rest, he has never been forgotten by her or our House. When word reached me of the destruction of the entire House of Steelhart, I was shocked. Raids by and against the tribes of the Shav'arvani are by no means unheard of, but for an entire House to be slaughtered...

Sometimes I wonder who is more reconciled with death: men, or women?

Women, after all, bring life into the world, and therefore, we are a kind of debtor.

What is given is taken in turn.
