Guarding Tradition

Posted by Victus on 06/12/20
The victory against the Skal'daja fleet is a great one. Both in protecting our homes from the scourge of heretical invaders, and in casting down those who would break their oaths to fidelity and the Gods. House Thrax extends its thanks to the brave soldiers that stood against the darkness. At a later date, we would commemorate every life lost with formal ceremony and gratitude. However, today I must address the people of the Mourning Isles. There is much uncertainty among traditionalists, much fear that our time-honored ways are being eroded. I agree that something must be done to guard ourselves in these times of change.

As Prince of Maelstrom, it is my responsibility to ensure that our sacred institutions are protected against all threats. It is time that House Thrax reaffirmed its commitment to our core values, and the tradition that this Compact is built upon.

House Thrax will condemn any noble marriage that is not for the purpose of furthering the development of houses and increasing the stability of the Compact -- The political union of two peers is meant for the benefit of their families and their house's honor. It is no place for emotions and personal ambition. To cloud one's judgment with ideas of love and fiction risks failing in a peer's duties.

Any noble house in the Mourning Isles wishing to be promoted must have a majority vote of approval from all noble houses of the Mourning Isles -- Expansionism represents a danger not only to the natural order, but to the stability of our lands. It cannot be left unchecked, and we must be vigilant against the danger it poses to our culture. Influence must be tried and tested before it is trusted. I trust in the judgment of all the Mourning Isles' to ensure that only those worthy will rise to the occasion.

The Mourning Isles does not allow any commoners to be ennobled unless they can prove a blood line link to a noble family. Any Isles noble marrying a commoner without proof of their heritage must leave their house and give up their ranks and privileges. -- The trend of ennobling commoners without proper justification to equal status has grown worryingly over recent years. It takes great commitment and sacrifice to elevate one's self to a place among the peerage. The privilege is too often given to those without a prior link to the bloodlines that have guided this Compact since its inception. We cannot put our faith in those who do not share a strong bond to our ancestors.

Finally, House Thrax would present this plea to the Great Houses and the Crown. The restrictions placed upon the fortifications and retinue in Arx since the Crownbreaker Wars should be lifted, so that all houses may see to their own defenses. We have seen firsthand that the safety of Arx is in question after the mobs that besieged the marketplace and rampaged through the Lowers. 100 soldiers was not enough to protect our homes, which very fortunately were only made to suffer from burglary. We may not have such luck a second time. While we are beset by internal strife and the threat of outside invasion, it is time that these archaic limitations are lifted before calamity strikes a second time.

Drafted by my hand, 06/18/1013 AR.

Tears in our wake, never at our wake.

Prince Victus Thrax
Prince of Maelstrom, High Lord of the Mourning Isles

--- Seryn Stance via Iseulet ---
Yes, lets absolutely keep traditions by changing them and chipping away at the sovereignty of vassal houses. That will solve everything.

--- Tessere Stance via Sabine ---
Perhaps the proposal for increasing the presence of soldiers in this fair city ought to come from a House who is not responsible for the restriction in the first place, having raised arms against their anointed sovereign previously.

--- Grimhall Stance via Valdemar ---
And what of the tradition of a vassal's self-determination?

--- Thrax Stance via Victus ---
House Thrax will never deny a vassal's right to choose to respect or disrespect our ways. It is for them to decide whether they would take on the judgment of their peers for their actions.

--- Crafters Guild Stance via Apollo ---
The Crafters Guild prays High Lord Victus detail the bounds of faith he is willing to ascribe to those of common birth, whose handiworks keep him clothed, fed, and indeed alive, lest he be misunderstood by the city's artisans.

--- Kennex Stance via Catalana ---
While Kennex is one of the more progressive houses of the mourning isles, we stand beside House Thrax in remembering that some traditions should be upheld.

--- Tyde Stance via Margot ---
Tyde praises the return of tradition and looks forwards to seeing the remains of enemies on crosses and pikes.

--- Blackshore Stance via Skye ---
Not all traditions need to be set aside for progress. Blackshore stands with House Thrax in leading the Mourning Isles to protect what is ours and thrive against adversity.

--- Navegant Stance via Turo ---
Respectfully, if House Thrax wants to position itself as a guardian of tradition, it should not be the driving force behind abandoning them every time it is convenient.

--- Acheron Stance via Rhea ---
Thoughts and prayers.

--- Rubino-Zaffria Stance via Aiden ---
Rather than dismantling a tradition of the City, why not support the organizations built within it to care for its defenses.
