Does The Dog Die?

I feel, as we are running into this more and more often, that I need to make an official policy post for myself - other GMs may do things differently as they choose, but this is my publicly stated policy.
Retainers are wonderful and are there to do all sorts of things for you, from being a discreet messenger to helping with investigations to sometimes jumping in front of you and taking the hit that would have killed you. And this is fine. However I will under no circumstances be forced to GM a dying or dead dog. Period. Horses too. So. If you use an animal retainer in this way, they will be "near death" and "run off to the woods, presumably to die", whereupon you can assign them to Puffin and they may or may not show up at a later date. The loss will be real - they will no longer be yours to use - but I just can't GM having the dog die. (Please note that I don't have any problems killing as many humanoid retainers as you bring to an event)
