Mercenaries in the Tydelands
Posted by Tenebry on 12/26/19
With the permission of the Duchess Margot Tyde, the mercenary Ajax is building a new chapterhouse for the Redwood Mercenary Company and recruiting freed thralls as sword and bow hands to buffer the duchy from civil unrest. The Duchess Margot sets aside land for his project, but emphasizes that male thralls should be hired as mercenaries and female thralls be hired for support wherever possible.
The venture is carefully planned and executed. Emmerly trains her new recruits with drills and sparring and even mini-mock-tournaments, rewarding high performers. No less than the martial Lady Miranda helps drill the recruits and teaches them to teach others. The fresh mercenary Rikako is herself trained, while also making sure the new chapterhouse doesn't offend local sensibilities. Lord Wash trains sailors as transport support for the company, and allows the crownsworn of his own crew to apply if desired. Marquessa Llewella Melaeris also participates in recruitment, if she makes a point of trying to instill the former thralls with her freedom-oriented house ideals. Being former thralls, they're amenable.
The design of the chapterhouse is left to Dustin, who is thorough. Barracks and mess halls are constructed, as is the necessary training yard and watch posts. Some of the grounds are converted to farms, and a small pantheon shrine is raised. Giada performs quartermastering duties expertly, working with caraveeners to create efficient supply chains, and keeping all those supplies cleanly organized. Prince Jasher takes to the seas to ensure the sea-borne trade routes are safe.
Beyond assisting in recruitment, Nurie seeks out the aid of crafters in construction, and talks up the company as an asset to the region. The Lady Lethe Tyde makes herself available to smooth over any concerns about the mercenary presence, and offers her healing expertise to keep mercenaries and support healthy. While both Duchess Margo and Marquessa Llewella offer construction materials and supplies at reasonable rates, Rosemary scours for good deals everywhere to supplement the savings.
Those within the Tyde lands take comfort from Lady Lethe's and Duchess Margot's hand in keeping the lands defended, but traditionalist Thrax are a little bothered by the idea of freed thralls armed and in a mercenary company. Just a li-i-i-ittle bit.
