The red sky Southwest of Arx seems most likely to be the result of some incident along the border between the Lyceum and Crownlands. I'd ask the Baron of Verpianto or the Baroness of Greenweep for more information, but I don't know either of them, even by reputation. Anyone care to make introductions?

Polling my fellow nobility: If someone has publicly challenged you, but then feels that they do not follow through, what is the appropriate amount of crow they should eat?

I am in a quandary. I write journals infrequently, so it is natural for me to be silent for months between entries. But my most recent post instigated a request for me to shut up or face a challenge. (In not so many words.) So I have to say, there are two people who can make me shut up, my wife and my liege, to whom I will respond, 'Yes dear.' and 'Yes sir.' Not necessarily in that order. To anyone else who may want to quiet me, the answer is and always be:

No.

I remember the planning session for Setarco's defense. It was myself, Katarina, Reese, Kaede and Domonico. The five of us represented the full faith of each of our Houses. Though we lacked the full knowledge of our enemy's strength and disposition, we crafted a plan that maximized our strengths, and had what we believed was the best chance of victory. We submitted that plan to the High Admiral Victus Thrax and he approved it.

Then we implemented that plan without mistake and the first battle of with the Gyre was won handily. We knew there would be a second the next day. Despite the lack of time to plan, we readied ourselves outside Setarco. When the enemy appeared it was in greater numbers, and more significant threats than we could have ever predicted.

So each of us admirals submitted an action plan to the High Admiral Victus. He chose one, and we carried it out to the best of our ability. The day was won, at great cost. The point here, is that there is a chain of command at sea. Whether it is planning, or sailing, or maintenance or navigating, any deviation from the chain of command will leave some important duty in the hands of the less qualified, and that could be fatal, not just to them but to the entire ship.

The defense of the Saffron chain from the Skallies has no High Admiral. It has no transparent chain of command for the other houses offering to be involved. If it continues without such, something is going to fall by the wayside, and the cause will be sunk. I would rather sail a scow tomorrow than go down with my caravel today.

Work goes apace on the dockyard outside of Arx. I am learning a lot about building underwater. It must be nice to be able to breathe there, do the work without any uncertainty. For now, I only know that the rocks that I cannot see are properly settled if the rocks I can see stay where I want them. It's a little bit of learning as I go and a lot of overcoming setbacks by redoubling one's efforts.

Okay. Sharkenoids officially exist. I owe Niklas 300,000 silver. That a thousand silver per tooth.

I hereby declare myself the king of purple onions. All purple onions are now my fiefdom. Witness the authority and power that making a post in the whites gives me.

Diplomacy is not my strong suit, so my wife keeps telling me and she is never wrong. I like sailing, and I have learned a few tricks about staying alive at sea. I didn't come from the salt, but it has adopted me. If you feel like there is a hole in their spirit that cannot be filled, perhaps that is the sea calling to you. This is an open invitation to any who want to learn to sail, or more about the sea. My ship is the Bounty of Cirella. She has a Crownsworn crew. If anyone wants to learn to sail, you're welcome aboard my vessel.

I am not a particularly religious man. But I know that the sea is a dangerous place, even for voyages that seem simple. I thank the Goddesses Mangata and the Queen of Beginnings and Endings that my wife Catalana returns to my side none the worse for wear in her journeys. Hopefully that's better than praying we will both be safe next time.

Once again a long parting is ended with a sweet reunion. Lady Catalana returns to Arx and I am forced to admit it is the greatest city in all Arvum, as long as she is there. For those who have not yet met her, I envy you that first glorious encounter. Would that I had no memory of her so that I could be struck by her beauty for a second time. Oh you lucky scoundrels to have that privilege to anticipate.

It's hard to prioritize the things I would like to accomplish. It feels like House Kennex has plumbed the depths of poverty, both economically and militarily. During that time, I committed myself for the first time to a cause, and found myself successful in restoring the Kennex navy, not alone, obviously but with some significant effort on my part. That was my duty, and since I've been released from that duty, I feel that I can undertake other challenges. The difficulty is choosing one. I'd like to see Darkwater restored. I'd like to build a ship to rival the Carlotta. I'd like to see Eurus. I'd like to meet a Marin'alfar. Not sure which one of those I will tackle first.

I have on occasion been accused of shirking my duty. And my accusers were probably right. These days I take my duties more seriously. I may have wedded for love, but that does not mean I am any less committed, in this life, and hopefully every life after, to the one I married. I may have married into a March, but I owe that March my fealty. That doesn't change because I have difficulty 'getting on' with anyone in it, if such occurs.

I owe the people of Stormward, the sailors of Kennex, the noble and common members of my house my support, my knowledge, my loyalty and my faith. Faith that they will, if they are shirking their duty, come around one day to uphold it, the same way King Alaric showed his faith in me and granted me a marriage that did not serve my house well at the time. I hope they have come to appreciate our family ties better now. At the very least it has helped me be a better man.

To this end, as I've learned to teach the sailors under my command, and when asked, shared that information with noble members of my house, Thrax, and others. I've been told that I am a very good teacher actually. But, as many have pointed out, there are a limited number of hours in the day. If I am asked to dedicate resources (my teaching) to individuals or houses outside my own, should not my duty be to ensure that doing so serves my house in some way? After all, when I am not available to them, I am shirking my duty to them on some level.

As a child I shirked my duty. And as a young adult I ran from it. Today, as a father and husband I have accepted my duty to my house. If that means I ask for your support in exchange for sharing my time that otherwise would have gone to those whom I swore to support, I know you will understand, because if I wanted to share it with you in the first place, you've demonstrated reason and intuition above and beyond the ordinary mien.

I return from a two day jaunt at sea to find my wife has presented me with a son. It is untimely, and unexpected, or I should not have been at sea. Once again we are separated when my wife needs me most. But I will not be dismayed by that, instead I rejoice that both are alive, and Gods willing, will remain so.
