I have given some thought to the questions recently posed, and have decided to answer them. I shall keep the answers brief.

1. What are you afraid of?

The Dream plunged into Nightmare.

2. What are your opinions on honor?

Remembrance that our lives are a precious gift. Treating each other accordingly, with respect and dignity.

What path do you see for yourself?

The path diverges. A choice is made. We shall see what comes of it.

4. A piece of advice?

If you are staring into the unknown, seek to know it.

A storm is brewing on the horizon. The drums of war are as the thunder, and the distant clash of steel crackles through the air like lightning. The wind rages and there is a heavy sense of apprehension in the darkening clouds. The minds of the brave warriors of the Compact are bent toward heroism and glory in the name of righteousness, while the Skal'dajan fleet lurks hidden within the mists, an uneasy and unknown threat, poised to strike like a serpent hidden in the waves.

The mood within the city of Pieros is one that is rife with a palpable sense of anticipation. Some have already sailed to meet the threat, while others prepare. I have noted that the people of the Compact are stalwart, ready to rise to any challenge. We have faced challenges before, and so too will we do so again in the coming days. We venture forth into the unknown, not with terror in our hearts, but with determination and a steadfast commitment to our vows, our oaths, our Faith.

What do the Skal'dajans fight for? They would put us all in chains, or worse.

Our choice is clear. We must prevail.

Let us not forget to record those deeds here within these pages, as Velllichor has charged us. Whatever happens, let History not be forgotten. Write of your deeds, and those of your comrades, friends and family. We stand on the precipice of something momentous. As I sit here in the Shrine of Vellichor in the city of Pieros, a guest of House Pravus, communing with Seraph Stilio on Journal Day, I am reminded of this.

May the Gods watch over our deeds, and deem them worthy.

I have been in quite the artsy mood these days. I find myself inspired to paint everything, from canvas to ceramics, to masks. I feel the need to paint the world in the visions that come to my mind. My fingers want to sculpt in clay and stone. I have always had an artistic streak, but these days, I cannot stop and see a thing without wondering how to render it in paint, ceramic or stone.

A question has come up about black journals, and so I feel that I must make a more public record of my reply to that person, though I shall respect their anonymity. It seems there is some confusion about how black journals work. Black journals are recorded typically in the Confessional in the Great Archive, by Godsworn Scholars who are trained in the care and handling of those journals. They are then re-sealed after every update. After the updates are made, they are taken away and stored for safekeeping by those same Godsworn, accompanied by Templars to ensure that they are safeguarded.

You may not take your own black journal out of the Archives for any reason. Destroying any part of a black journal would be heresy, for these are our sacred bond with the Gods. They are our private testimonials. They are intended for things that we generally would not care to share with the general populace, but things which we feel must still be recorded, in order to do honor to Vellichor as we have been charged. To seek to destroy them, or any part of a black journal, is something that should never be considered. They are inviolate.

Upon your death, however, you have options. You may request that your black journal be purged upon your death, which probably means they go into the care of the Censor Librorum. You may ask that your black journals be released, either to the public, or to specific individuals, but only upon your death, and only for your own black journals. Or, you may allow them to linger in the Great Archive, stored away and sealed for safekeeping, for all time.

Black journals should never be removed from the Great Archive. Nor is it permissible to divulge what is written within another person's black journal. Black journals are your most private thoughts, shared between you and the Gods. Think of them as sacred offerings, and you are laying them upon the altar of History. This is why only Godsworn Scholars may handle them. And those rare few who have in the past violated this sanctity were made into Silent Reflections, losing their writing hand and tongue that they might never speak again of what they have read.

I know this seems harsh, but our duty to Vellichor and the preservation and guardianship of knowledge is that great. Should there ever be a question as to whether something is permissible with regards to black journals, please do not hesitate to ask me, or any of the Legates.

I don't remember exactly when I first heard of Josephine Arcuri. It seems like her name has always been there. A fixture. I can't say that I knew her well, but we met on occasion, and I frequented her shop, the Velvet Box, often. She created the Tome of Platinum Excess which was the prize for last year's Storybook Soiree, which she ultimately ended up winning back with the costume she had made for herself. Yet, as a testament to her generous spirit, she donated the tome to the Great Archive, and there it now stands in all its glory, locked away in the original case created for the works of the Storybook Soiree, along with all the other beautiful stories that were created for that event. This is the type of person that Josephine was. Generous. Kind. She could be gruff, but she was wise.

It is hard to write this entry, and not feel my eyes burn with tears. Yet, I know that she chose the most honorable way to return to the Queen. She is a shining example of what it means to be self-sacrificing. I will never forget her courage.

My journey in this began when I heard of the Tenny twins, and their fate. I knew that I could not stand idly by while my Scholars were endangered. Just as Josephine could not stand by and do nothing, while her family, and others, were endangered. What started out, for me, as a quest to track down the killer of the Tenny twins, turned into a journey unlike any other. I stood alongside many others, including Josephine, as we fought to end a threat to Arx and its people.

The Butcher of Arx, Baron Ruthas of Glenbriar, has also returned to the Wheel. While his story was a sad tale, let us always remember it, too. He was a man, driven to terrible acts, consumed by jealousy, rage, and a sense of abandonment. These things caused him to become a monster. Let us never allow anyone to feel that they have been abandoned by the Gods. To be forsaken by the Gods is a terrible thing. Should one fall from Their graces, however... there is always a path back to redemption, should one truly seek it.

Raise your glasses in the coming weeks to Josephine Arcuri. She lost much, and paid the ultimate price to save others. It is a memory that will never leave me; her steadfast determination when the time came for the Queen to call her home. In the coming weeks, I will begin work on a new school, to be located in the Lower Boroughs. This school will be called the Josephine Arcuri School of Arts. Originally, it was intended to be an expansion of the Vellichorian Academy, but now, I feel it is more fitting that it be dedicated to her, and to all of the Arts. It will be a trade school, as well as a theological school. Before she died, Josephine indicated her support for it, and I will be working with Brother Felix Meadson on forging the details. If any would wish to contribute to the project, please reach out to us. More details will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead.

One of the most rewarding things I have found about becoming Archscholar is that I am able to help others. When I am able to help others in their journey, I feel as though all is right in the world, and that I am exactly where I am meant to be.

Then there are other times, when I learn that I have been in the dark about a great many things, until someone opens my eyes to the blinding truth of a situation. I wonder to myself, how could I have known nothing about this? This thing is huge, and impactful. How could I have been so blind?

I have had both experiences in a single day. I am going to need some time to think about these things.

Sometimes, when we hear about the deeds of heroes, we do not often hear the entire story. Often, there are heroes who have no name, because none think to ask the name of the innkeeper who guides with information or who provids shelter for a night. None think to ask the names of the villagers passed along the way, or the guardsmen at the gates who stand watch against the night.

Today, I write the story of Ben, the guardsman of the village known as Rocawan. Though he was afraid, he led us to a place where the Butcher's presence could be felt most keenly, where a gallery of beautiful murals created in Jayus' name were defiled. We do not know much about Ben, other than that he was a faithful guardsman, and mentioned that he should have joined the Faith, after finding himself inspired by Sister Dianna. Perhaps he might have joined, had he lived. But his life was lost as he was to come in search of me and alert the village of danger. Yet another life, hopeful and bright, snuffed out by the Butcher. Marquis Fairen Leary, too, was badly injured.

We will bring justice, in the end. Soon. In the meantime, may the Queen of Endings shelter poor Ben within her arms, and let his deeds never be forgotten.

The Dream in which we live is a constant balancing act. Every choice we make affects the Dream in some way, and the people around us. Sometimes, those choices can be difficult, and we may be unable to see the clearest path. We may pray upon our decision, but in the end, it is our choice to do what we think is right. It is up to us to interpret the ideals of the gods as best we can, though even there, we may sometimes disagree.

We live in extremely interesting times right now. Forces stir within the world - forces that we have forgotten about. It is our duty to learn, to try to understand that which we have forgotten, and then to act in ways that we consider wise. There are some fights that are worth fighting, and then there are other fights that may be unnecessary, or which serve to distract us from the larger battles ahead. Wisdom, in my opinion, is weighing those decisions, of what is necessary, and what is unnecessary, and then doing what is necessary. Sometimes decisions made can be unpopular, and it may be that there are some who will question it, disagree with your choices, and fight against you on it. The actions we take are our own responsibility, regardless of the outcome.

There are a great many struggles looming on our horizon. Meanwhile, there are many smaller struggles going on within the Compact. Whether they be of a philosophical nature, or a physical nature, or our own personal moral dilemmas, there are constant shifts of perspective taking place. We all must choose our battles.

Recently, I made a decision. It was a difficult decision, but I have my reasons for doing so. In this case, I had to weigh the larger battles against a smaller one. I had to weigh the impact of that decision against what it would cost, should I simply let the thing go. In the end, I chose to do what I felt was best. I stand by that decision. I had to choose which course of action would better spend my personal energy and reserves. Do I spend my energy on this smaller one-on-one battle, which seems to be going nowhere? Or do I find the higher ground, gather my allies, and brace and prepare for the enemy few others see coming? I chose the latter.

We don't have time for these petty squabbles amongst ourselves. These things weaken the whole, when we must remain strong now, more than ever. There are those who fight their own personal battles, because they wish to be proven right, or make a point, or they have an agenda that is ultimately self-serving. And then there are those who fight because they see the bigger picture. I believe wisdom lies in the latter. Otherwise, it is merely pride and selfishness. These things do not fit in my definition of wisdom.

Seek the bigger picture. Reflect upon your inner self and motivations.

Yesterday, I was told I was a coward. But the person who chose to tell me this, in the end, knows very little about me, or what it is to be me. I am simply picking my battles, and washing my hands of those things which are distracting me from the bigger picture.

*penned by Jacinthe, Assistant to the Archscholar*

Normally, I would write this journal entry myself as I always do, but I am currently incapacitated, so I have asked Jacinthe do the writing for me while I heal. I have no words to describe our recent foray in search of what happened to the Tenney twins. They were bright, young, hopeful and ideal prospects to become Godsworn. I daresay we were successful in our findings, and yet, some part of me feels that the work is not yet done. As soon as we have recovered from our injuries, our investigation will continue. But I made a promise, that I would see that their deaths would not go unanswered, and together, we have fulfilled that promise

May we ever be vigilant against the temptations that are placed before us, lest we take the path of the Butcher of Arx. Power is a responsibility, and a privilege, not to be abused for personal gain. Once you begin to walk that road, it will only lead to darkness. I hope, one day, to write the story in its entire, but until I am certain the story is complete, I shall maintain my own counsel for now.

Otherwise, from what I can tell, the restoration of the Stacks (again) seemed to be going so well. But then it seems someone decided to start putting books in places where they don't belong, creating chaos everywhere. Hopefully that has been sorted, and we can get everything put in its proper place once again. Then, I shall re-open the stacks to allow the public full access once more. In the meantime, our Scholars continue to stand by to help you find what you're looking for.

We live in interesting times. While I have been abed, alone with my thoughts, I realize that we, the people of Arx, have many obstacles ahead of us. But, I urge patience, and careful observation. Now is a time to act with caution, and I pray that Vellichor will guide our great leaders in wisdom. Many difficult choices may lie ahead, but it is important to remember that they /are/ choices. Some do not have the luxury of choice, bound in service, either by Writ or the chains of slavery. Let us use our right to choose our path responsibly, lest we too end up in chains.

I am tired of people challenging me and the other leaders of the Faith with passive-aggressive, snarky ccmments on what should be a simple matter regarding white journals. There are far more important matters occupying our attention. So I shall spare no more energy on this.

Written By Sina

Dec. 6, 2019, 12:56 a.m.(4/27/1012 AR)

Someone asked me to write something up about what should or should not be written in the whites. I thought I'd take a moment before I find my bed to do so, though I will note that I have done so before, if one cares to look at my past journal entries. I also recommend reviewing the journal entries of Dominus Aldwin for insight. But, I'll put it in my own words here, as simple as I can.

White journals are our way of honoring Vellichor's charge to us, to record our history, that we might never again lose knowledge. It is why we Scholars guard them so closely - these pages are a testimony. They are sacred. They are not intended for the purpose of writing fiction. If you want to write fiction, all well and good. You're welcome to write books specifically devoted to fiction, and you can even donate them to the Archive so they can be catalogued in the Stacks for all to read and enjoy. But, white journals are for the recording of our lives, and our history. They aren't meant to be filled with fables and imaginings. They are meant for reality. Otherwise, how will future generations know what to believe? When they are told that white journals are our sacred testimony of our past, and they read words of fiction here instead, what will they think? So, what do you write here? Not fiction. Not other people's secrets and confidences twisted up with lies. Here, we record the events of our time, so that future generations will look back, and find our knowledge waiting for them, just as we today look back, searching for knowledge of our forebears.

I've also been asked what one may do to avoid being excommunicated. While I had no part in the decision to do so, I can say that Elisha was given numerous warnings about using white journals to write fiction, particularly on matters of Faith. This was not some snap judgment, but an enforcement of the Dominus' decree should he fail to do what the Most Holy asked. That the Dominus even had to be involved here is a serious situation. That doesn't happen until all other paths are exhausted.

So, if you want to avoid being excommunicated, I'd say there are six simple rules:

1. Follow the Laws of Limerance. Keep to your Oaths. Don't embrace the Abyss.

2. Do not embrace or craft false doctrines or incite others to that same heresy.

3. Don't break the sanctity of the holy places of the Gods. Don't steal from shrines, or attack people within them.

4. If you haven't taken Godsworn vows within the eyes of the church, don't claim to be the voice of the gods.

5. Both white and black journals are sacred. Don't threaten to harm them. Period.

6. If someone repeatedly warns you against something because you will be excommunicated if you don't stop, maybe heed the warning. Especially if that person is the Dominus.

Pretty simple, as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure there are more things you could add to this list, but really, what it comes down to is each person must take responsibility for their own actions. Freedom of Choice does not mean freedom from Consequence. That's all I have to say on the matter.

Relationship Note on Tatienne

Thralldom cannot be ended overnight. The repercussions, both economically and socially, would be devastating to the Mourning Isles and its people, and as a consequence of that, the entire Compact will be affected. This is something you do not understand. Sure, it might be easy to just announce, "Well, we went ahead and freed all the Thralls! Celebrate! Rejoice! Everyone is free!" But that does not make a thrall truly free. Measures must be put into place (which I have been a part of aiding, I might add), to ensure that those Thralls have a place to go once they are freed, so they do not fall prey to enemies of the Compact, or sickness and disease, or abject poverty. They will need livelihoods, homes in which to live, a means of making it in this world, which can be incredibly cruel. These things take time. To do otherwise would be no better than throwing lambs to the wolves.

If you want to help, put your hands and mind and anger into the work. Channel it into something useful that will actually ensure the survival of freed thralls. It will be far more productive and, I suspect, fulfilling for you. And you will be doing them a great service. While I am all for recording one's feelings within the Whites, as we are asked to do by Vellichor, sometimes writing words isn't enough. You must be willing to live up to your own expectations. What are /you/ doing to aid in the freeing of thralls?

Relationship Note on Elisha

This man has proclaimed himself publicly in the Whites to be a scholar, and yet he continues to write fiction rather than fact. He has shown no interest in the pursuit of true knowledge, nor does he accept correction for his many misrepresentations. Vellichor does not inspire one to write fiction or poetry. Vellichor's ideal is knowledge. Poetry and fiction lies in the realm of Jayus, the Prince of Stories, and does not lie within the realm of the Scholar, unless such stories are intended to teach. Instead, these stories of his seem intended to constantly try the patience of the Faith.

To claim to be a scholar and then to write fiction is indeed quite the misrepresentation. He is most assuredly not recognized nor is he ordained as a Disciple of Vellichor or a Scholar of Vellichor. Let the record show, the Scholars of Vellichor do not tolerate imposters, especially when said imposter has been accused of heresy and excommunicated.

This talk of conflicting oaths and vows, and Templars versus Scholars is concerning to me. The Templars and the Scholars of today are of one mind as far as I am aware. To guard and protect knowledge. All Godsworn share this sacred duty to some extent.

The past is the past, and while we may learn from it, the circumstances which led to that conflict which pitted Scholar against Templar, and the unfortunate conflict with Darius Thrax were extreme. No such conflict exists currently that I am aware of, nor would I ever wish to see such in our lifetime.

One must examine closely whether one's heart and thoughts come into conflict with one's vows. The path of the Godsworn is not for everyone. But those who choose such a path must honor /all/ of the Gods. Gloria demands that we act with honor. Limerance requires us to adhere to our vows. Vellichor charges us with the guardianship of knowledge. To break one's vows is not without consequence. If your vows, mind and heart are in conflict, then there is the problem. In the past, circumstance came to an unfortunate difference of opinion within the Faith as the extreme views of the time clashed with one another. Vows were broken. Lives and knowledge were lost. It was a time of great upheaval.

It is my opinion that a scholar's vows of guardianship over knowledge should not conflict in any way with the established tenets of our Faith. There are lines which should not be crossed. Dominus Marach's teachings crossed those lines in some cases, and he was deemed to be a heretic. Does this make his writings worthy of destruction? No. Knowledge in itself is not good or evil. It is how we use it. We must be vigilant and guard against the pitfalls that come with knowing. It is for us to make responsible choices. Some are not capable of doing so, however, as has been proven over the ages. So it is the duty of the Faith to act as guardians against the misuse of the knowledge gathered, to ensure that it is used in accordance with the ideals of the gods. Hence the establishment of the Censor Librorum. In this way, we honor Vellichor's charge to be the guardians of knowledge, without destroying it.

There should never be another conflict between the Templars and the Scholars over destruction of knowledge. It is by design that both fall under the umbrella of the triad of Arts and Science. Our duties are not in conflict. Our relationship should not be painted otherwise. It has been my privilege to stand alongside the Templars and Sir Preston in our shared purpose. We may not always agree on all matters, but we are stronger working together. Let none suggest that the Scholars and the Templars are at odds. We stand together in our purpose and our duty as brothers and sisters in service to the gods.

Please note that the scholars may take some time preparing your journal for others to read.
