Relationship Note on Ian

Lord Ian Kennex recently visited the Black Hall to train. His swordsmanship is exceptional, and I have had the opportunity to observe it many times. There is sharpness to his reflexes that have been honed to an instinct, and the will driving his sword is unbreakable.

He asked me what it means to be a swordsman. I answered that it was an artform that allowed the practitioner to shape the world. I had not thought about it before, and when I reflected on it later - for in the clash of blades I had hardly the space to follow any path of thought save the one in front of me - I think I would say the same thing of poetry. They are a means of expressing oneself and influencing the world. My father would laugh at this notion. 'Sophistry' he would roar, and say 'poetry is for the idle and useless. The axe is for honor' or some such words.

For me, the meaning of swordsmanship lies in protecting what I love, winning renown for Gloria, and those who taught me, and living out my vows. It is pleasing and interesting in its movements. It takes life and protects it, making the sword artist the emissary of the Queen, and the guardian of Lagoma.

It was good to see Ian again, even as we stand on the brink of war. My prayers go with him, though I suspect the warriors of Skal'daja and the apostates will soon learn how hard he is to kill.

Relationship Note on Mikani

Reach out to me, O flame against the night.
Remind me that you're there.
Let my hands in yours now intertwine.
Let known the fragrance of your hair.

Though Duty should often part us,
This moment I will seize
To tell you how I love you,
Outside Time's tyrant lease.

Let me speak to you in language
Beyond the spoken word:
Trace signs of love with finger tips,
And from your every breath I'll learn

How best I can love you,
So if silence steals my life
Never can you doubt the truth
That I will always be your knight.

Relationship Note on Noelle

I am not a poet if to such a clarion I sent no answer,
For your luck, princess, let my quill be a dancer,
And move with grace upon this sacred page
That Vellichor might hear, with ears both wise and sage,
A pleasing hymn to cast away your spirit's gloom,
And put in its place an immortal bloom
That like some undying rose of Tor
From the earth shall rise, and skyward soar,
And so one of thirteen I count my verse
To break for good that unlucky curse,
And wish in simple words, but filled with hope,
That only the best of luck now upon you dote.

What does it mean to be ugly? Imperfection? Humanity? Those are things of beauty. I am looking forward to seeing Svana Grayhope and her family, and perhaps the opportunity to remind her how she looks in the eyes of a friend.

Relationship Note on Harlex

I have known the Sword of Lenosia, Harlex Valtyr for a little over four years. I first met him when I embarked on an expedition with the Physician's Guild after Rukhnis had first expressed an interest in joining. We traveled to a village called Eresport, and I fought by Harlex's side as we evacuated the party from relentless enemies.

We have, on occasion, met at festivals or trained together in Arx - the outcome of those duels I hardly need to relate here. I have always found him to be a consummate warrior: not unfriendly, but not one to relish unnecessary conversation - at least with me. His swordsmanship is worthy of the greatest admiration and emulation, and I have studied his technique as best one might while fighting desperately. He has written some in the Whites about the techniques he favors, including a lethal slashing attack made while drawing a weapon from its scabbard. I have had great success with this technique in the field. Deor, my longtime retainer who left my service to attend Lady Genevieve Stahlben, used to call the technique "Wolf's Fang."

I had a recent encounter with the Sword of Lenosia in which, had I been in his position, I would have seriously considered killing me. Instead, after briefly attending to his ward, he dragged me to safety, with the words: "Come poet. You've a verse or two left to left to scribe." Such is the mercy of one unshaken by fear. I mean to make the most of it by quill and sword.

Sing on, poets of the realms,
And cease not to write of beauty or of truth.
To the daft is genius daft,
But your verse shall find fit audience though few.

Whose dream is this in which I trudge
Amid the frosty forest black?
Ahead she moves with panting breath,
With gathered silken skirts in hand:
Black hair billowing like the pall of night.
Whose dream is this in which I trudge
Till cold swallows up her sapphire eyes
And the touch of her fingers, devoid of warmth,
Reveals her as my mistress?

Have I ever known myself?
Whose dream is this?

Sing on, O poet dear!
Such strains of dancing genius clear,
And seek your darling, sacred muse
In stars and trees and wat'ry floods -
Wherever she may happ'ly play,
And when your quill you deign to raise,
Please send me then your joyful bird
For I would not miss a word!

Seasons have passed like waves upon the shore,
Swallowed up in graves, lonely and unmarked -
Like humanity's lost, forgotten lore,
Which once flourished, but now is cold and stark.

Will my wife and son and daughters beloved,
Remember after such a yawning span
The one who lived for their familiar touch,
Or prefer the memory to the man?

And does my dear friend still wander the streets
Of the Lowers to administer well
Stern care to those in the most dire need,
Or found some other cause in which to dwell?

Golden Reese! Princess high, and brilliant knight!
Do you still slay foes of gods divine,
Training those who seek potent wisdom bright,
And etch your deeds upon the Scrolls of Time?

One of these questions, though, I needn't speak,
For ev'n in coldest reaches of the North
Spirits of Nature hold in great esteem
Th' Spirit Walkers' Elder and Halfshav Lord.

Yet when I approach my cousin's estate
In the Redrain Ward, and embrace my wife,
Doubts, like Reese's foes, quickly dissipate
And darksome clouds disperse to rays of light.

Sonnet for Svana

Each night divorced from sleep by troubled thoughts
Do I lie awake, gazing at the stars
That remind me still of the friends I've lost,
Who'd sail with me a while but for wars.

Between those twinkling celestial lights
Emptiness is, and peace so sweetly calls
To banish Care's ceaselessly rolling tides,
And bring silence surer than Rukhnis' balms,

Yet there among the dreary waking dream
Do Svana meet, with ale and babes in hand,
Smiling to introduce th' enchanting miens
Of the newest from storied Grayhope's band.

And in their new-woke eyes, sure hope I find
'Long with company of the merry kind.

Relationship Note on Tescelina

When we first met, we did not get along. You embodied your ideals with a countenance as cold and majestic as the Everwinter. I was fire and warmth, clinging desperately to mine. You chided me once for my foolishness in addressing the stars, as those who imagine life in all things sometimes do, and yet we both could not look away from their brilliance. In parting, you smiled - rare, radiant and beautiful.

Your sword skill was alive with fluidity and grace. As we traveled, our differences became strengths. You became someone I respected and trusted: a comrade in arms and a friend.

In my nightmares of Sungreet, when the men and women of Stormwall, who trained with me since I was a boy, are dying, and my rage and hate begin to well up into a black despair - then do I glance to my right and see you locked in a mortal duel with the Reviled Master. Each time in my dream I fight desperately to reach you - but I can never change anything. You always become a brilliant light.

You have embodied all of the highest ideals of knighthood, Lady Tescelina Wyrmguard. It is an honor to have known you. The last message I have in your hand reads: "I have not smiled in a long time." Let it be otherwise in your next turn, Knight of Sorrows.

Relationship Note on Shard

I'm not disagreeing with your assessment of Lord Alecstazi here, but you're not exactly a charmer, and his responses are far more embarrassing than I could have dreamed.

I leave for the Northlands to fight the Ravens, and writing about my family helps keep me focused. If you don't want to read it, don't. One thing I learned about myself when I was with Lord Ian and Lady Brianna in captivity is that I am not a man without fear. I must simply do what I can to face it.

Relationship Note on Alecstazi

The disagreement between me and Lord Alecstazi began with the White Journal he submitted on 6/12/1011.

It is true that I love my family and friends, that I feel deeply, and that it is at odds, sometimes with my reason. It also true that I have made many mistakes. Though sometimes it is hard to understand why, my friends and family have supported me, and I am grateful.

Dame Judyth used to teach us of the various species of love: that of passion, of fidelity, and of deep friendship - but the definition I liked the most was one that came from Seraph Avelia of Lenosia. She said that love was to "will the good of another." This concept has become dear to me. It is the balm to a life of war; it strengthens my resolve and makes me a better father, husband and lord of Stormwall. Others may disagree. They are free to do so, but I am a poet, and I am one who loves deeply.

I have the deepest respect for House Halfshav and House Thrax. I have been treated with kindness by both families, and hope that I may treat them in like manner as long as I live. My conflict with Lord Alecstazi is a personal one. We agree that duty is of greatest importance to a peer, and that love between married partners is not an evil. He has, however, treated my wife with extreme disrespect.

He criticized our affection, and said he could not see what House Crovane would gain from the match, not realizing, perhaps that the match was approved by Duchess Fianna, Count Graham, and the Faith, whose wisdom in such matters far exceeds his own. Time has vindicated my wife, as her tireless efforts as Minister of Income and Ambassador of the Marin'alfar have served both my House and the Compact. The fact that my wife and I shared deep affection before our match was approved is something that I would hope he can relate to.

Lord Alecstazi also avows himself a firm traditionalist, and has frequently written to defend those who support the institution of thralldom. He calls Lady Mikani a social climber, and yet if social standing is so important to him, one must ask how many princesses of the other Great Houses he courted before joining one of the newest Houses of the Compact, that extends back, like my own House, only a few generations? If traditions are so important to him, why would he call his own wife as his champion, when the very spirit of the institution of honor duels has been implemented to handle perceived slights without involving those emotionally invested in the conflict?

Let no one mistake Lord Alecstazi for a man of principle. His legacy in the Whites is an account of pettiness, meanness and arrogance. It is his love for my friend that redeems him. May it ever be so.

As for me, I hope that when my son and daughters look back at my journals after I've passed, they find a man who sought to fulfill his oaths, love his family and friends, and one who stood up for the mother who gave so much of herself caring for them.

Relationship Note on Khanne

In prose, let me say that there is indeed a disagreement between me and Lord Alecstazi for the rude and callous way he treated Lady Mikani when she passed on her regency to Count Graham. At that time, he disparaged our union on the grounds that it grew out of affection, and was later consented to by my cousin and the Faith, for the mutual benefit of Houses Byrne, Redreef and Crovane. This is the parallel of the situation that has arisen between Lord Alecstazi and Lady Brianna, though, of course, Lord Alecstazi is still talking of social climbing, even as my wife handles the finances of my House with skill and competency and my three children grace the black tree of Crovane.

In truth though, I hold no serious grudge against him. Poets must exercise their wit when opportunities arise. A great trial awaits my muse, and we must sharpen our poetic skills to meet it. I hope that Lady Brianna smiles when she reads my verse, but if not, I will desist. We have undergone many trials, and I have noticed that when she is angry with me, the ink of her missives is particularly deeply engraved in the parchment.

The wedding celebration was magnificent - save for the accident - and I am very pleased to see Duchess Khanne's House growing, and Lady Brianna happy.

Relationship Note on Alecstazi

Do beseech Jayus for some couplets, Lord
Your lack of logic finds us growing bored
O, but you claim no match for you be found
Save one who lately wore resplendent gown?

Sure, Lord, I shall have take your word for it -
That what Love did choose as a perfect fit
Was actually the High Lord's command,
And for stark duty took Brianna's hand.

No other reason moved that happy match -
Because Halfshav /had/ to marry Thrax.
For what reason? Ask me not, sweet Muse!
For the former prince might his temper lose,

And our duty from the gods and spirits
Should fully support this man's appearance
For truest friend, bright souled Brianna's sake
Else we may get Whites claiming thralls are great,

Since defeat by Love he'll not admit with grace
And so he digs himself a deeper grave.

Relationship Note on Alecstazi

Though I may deny it later,
I am a man of pride,
And 'fore the lord who Halfshav joined
My true love he belied.

No noble for bright love should wed,
But only duty should incite
A peer of our most sacred realm
To bind with another life.

He scoffed at my wife's joining
The renown House of Crovane
Just as Ivan the Apostate now
In Sungreet treats him with disdain:

"From a Prince a serpent's fallen
To bestial half a man.
One who had such promise
Now sunk with wedded band."

Yet bright is all love's promise,
And makes our duties light,
As hate the smallest trifle
Adds a lodestone's weight in spite.

Heirs Love grants in plenty,
And attentive to our young
That happy force is guiding us,
And makes our House trees strong,

I think that in this contest, Lord,
You must to this poet yield,
And admit before the wife you chose
That Love has won the field.

I give congratulations,
And to the Northlands welcome you.
May your married life be wonderful,
Though give Lord Arik fewer wounds.

It is not exceedingly often that I have the pleasure of the company of the Vala of the Spirit Walkers, but I was fortunate enough to find myself in her presence at the Taste of Arx Ball. We spoke of the magnificence of the palace, where the ball was held, the splendor of its guests, how all the wonders of court produced a greater appreciation of those of nature, and vice versa. Duchess Khanne herself was dressed in a fine gown, and adorned with precious jewelry in the style of our Northlands. Stately and elegant was her demeanor, yet it possessed all the warmth of a Spring morning in the sunlight.

I hope it will not be too long before I again have the pleasure of her company.

Rukhnis has me on a steady diet of bone broth, eggs, cooked vegetables drenched in butter and salt, and some fruit from Southport or the Ashford orangery in the evening. She and my cousin Clara have also concocted two types of tea that help to reduce inflammation: one with some manner of stimulant for the morning, and the second meant to relax my body in the evening.

I've been walking around more, even returned to training with Leonce. My body's still stiff, and my strength has not returned, but I'm feeling better everyday. Such are the benefits to living with two skilled physicians.

With time away from marital training, I've sought to develop my investigative skills. Lord Bedivere Whitehawk has shown me various techniques for searching the archives, and even ways to systematically examine the environment to deduce information from what is or is not found.

My senses have reawakened under the training of Count Giulio Corvini. The time in captivity was alternating periods of intense physical suffering and dreadful rumination, and it had dulled my senses considerably. Count Giulio has give me techniques to return my attention to scents, hearing, touch, taste and sight. He has regenerated the animal inside that the shavs attempted to beat into submission.
