Relationship Note on Dio

With the help of Marquis and Marquess Saraceni, Sir Merek Black, Lady Thea Malvici, Lord Thomas Hawkmour, and my father the slavers of Isle al'Araq have met with justice. Many who had no home now have a home in Pearlspire. Let the death cries of slavers and the breaking of chains be the song of your freedom.

This could not have been done without the resources of my Patron, Marquis Dio Seracini.

Climb high.

I do not know how to spell it, but the translated name of this tea is Silver Needle. If you put too much heat and steep to it too long it leaves a very bitter taste. The water should not reach a boil. You know you'll hit the right steeping time when the aroma that results is a light floral scent. The taste is smooth with a touch of sweetness.

This watercolor was made by a rushed beginner. Pale swaths show where too much water was used.

The Child of the Emperor sits in Whisper House with a small group of artists. The woman evaluates everyone with a measured look, yet one touched by curiosity. Her eyes show the confidence of someone who knows the truth of the world, and she would ask all to accept it as their own. Rather than arrogance she shows a parental concern. There is a touch of regret that she cannot stand parent to them all. The artist has taken license from the sky outside and has washed the emissary in a radiant light of the sun painted on the horizon where the sky meets the Bay of Thrax. The sails of the Ordered Path are hinted at with a few strokes. The artist has offered the freedom to choose whether the sky shows dusk or dawn.

The Seliki lady asks me to write down the sound of her conch shell that she is blowing to celebrate the birth of Lady Sereia Seliki, daughter of Count Orrin Seliki and Countess-Consort Scythia Seliki.

This shell gives a loud squawk followed by a sputtering and a "that's not how it goes" whereupon there is deep sustained booming.

Do not taste the drink she is sharing. It is vile. Is it a jape? Yet she drinks it.

I wish that I could provide materials for the artists so that they can capture history in vivid art that lasts thousands of years. I have seen how cracked and faded paintings look after hundreds of years, much less thousands. Art in stone and metal endures longer, though stone weathers and metal erodes.

Relationship Note on Ryhalt

In your journal you write, "I won't even start on how damaging it is to trade to ban products on the assumption thrall labor is involved. If we don't know how the goods are produced, how can we know they are produced with thrall labor? That is where I will leave it and let the true scholars muse on the ramifications."

The bulk of recent commentary has been about slave labor in foreign kingdoms. It is a fact that slavery is practiced in Cardia. In this particular question, let scholars not waste time discussing hypotheticals when they may be able to discuss facts. Has anyone simply asked an emissary from one of the foreign kingdoms who are not interdicted by the faith if there are /any/ goods not made by slaves?

What started as a desire to add to our histories as Vellichor would ask has become more complicated that I expected. Thinking that I can do so without political implications was a mistake.

I felt I understood the purpose of your Salon, despite how clumsily I participated there and in the whites. I am no courtier and have been trained more in war than in diplomacy, yet I have shown respect to the emissaries I've talked to despite my choice not to buy goods from their land.

I have also used the analogy of Thrax, though I have been told it is not apt.

Relationship Note on Monique

The portrait painting session went well. The paintings of the Tribune, Lady Petraea Livy, and her retinue are in the Great Archive. I am grateful that she agreed to sit for us. Her and her retinue are part of our history now, and it would be a loss if all we had were the words written of her visit.

The artists there impressed me with their skill and imagination. I do not wish to embarrass anyone by putting them on the spot, though can do so if you like! Let me just say that I enjoyed the non-representative themes. The inclusion of our King in a painting of the foreigners and all of us performers in one painting, on another a missing Wolf's Guide. One with the lady twined with a black spire.

Thank you artists.

I am very grateful to Lady Monique for opening the Gilded Page to us.

We will have a caravel soon. It has me in mind of how to plan for a trip. To the South there is the Suthryn Wastes that prevent travel farther on. We could try multiple trips to set up provisioning stops, but the nature of the land makes those unlikely to last. If we wish to go East past the Eventide, I have heard of no lands were we could even try provisioning stops.

It is my thought that we could see if the gourdes cultivated by the Ashford's last year would work for one trip! With enough food and water we could push out much farther.

So, about snow.

It is not as cold in Arx as in Pearlspire, but there is a curiosity about us. The waters are warmer than you'd predict where we are. One day I shall learn why. Take note, future scholars. Herein starts the trail of clues.

What started as a Salon called to discuss the topic of mass condemnation wandered into the topic of leadership and blind followers. The Salon is open to all, commoner and noble alike, and the Salon /is/ for questioning.

There were many commoners there who do not have the authority to compel mass obedience to a decision about trade - thus the discussion diverted to whether people should even think on the topic of mass condemnation due to an obligation to obey. The Salon /is/ for questioning. There would be no discussion about mass judgement if we lead with that. That is a topic for another Salon.

As for this Salon topic, asking if I approve of "mass condemnation" (or its reflection) is not sensible without something concrete to access. So what shall it be?

The presentation of the topic seemed provoked by commentary in the whites on the embargo on goods from Eurus and the ensuing discussion of goods from Cardia, thus that is the grounding of my response.

There were multiple prompts. I will repose two:

1). Is mass judgement acceptable? 2) Does it effect or prevent change?

As for (1), to understand whether it is acceptable we need to understand what mass judgement even means. Here is my thought: When you gather people together there will be consensus on many things. That is reality and there is no accepting or not accepting of it. That is a trivial definition, and I do not think the Marquis meant to provoke trivial answers about whether we think human nature is acceptable.

A followup question is: whether it is acceptable for people to attempt to shift consensus. For that is what people do with commentary or trade agreements. I think this journal will get too long if I try to touch on that, but I just wanted to set that out as a question instead of the other.

Since I have the authority to make trade agreements, I will focus on (2) and narrow it to trade agreements with places not under ban by the Faith for that is an entirely different matter.

Both noble and merchant houses make trade agreements that effect change. Else why marry? The houses join, they profit or decline. Attitudes shift. Where the power differential is comprehensible, it is clear that it makes a difference.

When the power differential is so huge as to be incomprehensible? It is vanishingly small that consensus will have little effect. Thus it is with trade and Cardia. (Is there any trade with Jadairal?)

I do not buy Cardian steelsilk.

If I knew of houses in those lands that did not have slaves, I would encourage people to trade with them instead of slavers so that the benefits go to the free houses. There must be some benefit, else why do we see goods?

But I have never heard of free houses in Cardia. If any know, please tell me. I will let our merchants know. (though most of them will think I am talking about some house in the Lyceum, no doubt. I am still working on updating our sea charts). (and I suppose I would also have to know honest import houses).

As a follow-on topic, is it effective to reflect such a judgement in an official policy?

There are times when houses do not make official proclamations and only make the choices in practice. This is to give room for maneuvering.

Are acceptable trade terms possible? Without a public proclamation against them, they are, even if in practice it will never happen. Thus there will be motivation for the other to even broach the topic of change. That is my thought as to whether a proclamation has an effect or is advisable.

So, /official/ mass condemnation related to trade? There might be a small chance that change is blocked where there is a small difference in power.

Please do not ban my tutors if any of this was nonsense. It's not their fault.

Relationship Note on Rowenova

I shall shovel snow around clinics and apothecaries again this year.

Last year Scout Rowenova inspired me to shovel snow from the apothecary in her neighborhood all the way to the Trader's Tavern. We were able to stir up the enthusiasm of the neighborhood kids to assist, though we did get some pummeling with snowballs from that font.

Anyway...

The times when you need to go the apothecary are not the times to go outside and see that you are snowed in.

People forget that he is not the only one in Arx from that land. I don't know that we would have any choice in the matter for who would staff the embassy or represent them as diplomat. Using the analogy of Lord Rysen, if there are more virtuous relatives perhaps they would apply their influence as to who should represent them. It is a big if, to be clear.
