I've found a particularly young and friendly scholar who I believe I can be friends with. I still do not know if I want to write anything in the Black, however. Keeping secrets was never my forte (and so, keep that in mind, dear reader). Lady Veronica was very busy today with things that didn't require someone of my talents, and so I had most the day to myself. Rather than go off into the city to meet more nobility, I worked most the day with the personal guard of House Keaton.

They're a well-drilled bunch and I think I learned a lot from them. Still, they treat me as a commoner would a nobleman, and it unnerves me. I know being a knight affords me certain privileges, but I would rather be seen by the smallfolk as what I am -- one of them.

I've been thinking too much -- a byproduct of the capital, no doubt.

Fortunately, finding a Scholar of Vellichor is less difficult than nagivating the social climate of Arx. I find myself interacting with more nobility than I've ever thought I would in my life. In Oakhaven for a time it was just Lady Veronica I stood beside. My master used to say that bowing is good for the back, and while I have found in my experience -- short as it may be, but with the amount of nobility here, not inconsiderable -- that I have to exercise a lot more.

It's my own fault, I know. I shouldn't bow so low, but that is how the heroes bowed, and so too shall I.

Relationship Note on Veronica

Lady Veronica was the first of House Keaton that I actually met. My master had already been dead by the time I returned home to Oakhaven. I must admit, as soon as I met her I knew that the Keatons, the House that governed my home, were going to be my masters from this day 'til my last. We've had many misadventures since then, and now that I'm in the capital perhaps I can try and temper her boldness a little. That's more important (though not by much) than getting her to stop calling me Sir Paddy.

I've been in Arx a few days now and I'm still overwhelmed by how large the city is. I come from humble beginnings and this is so expansive. The Marquessa was every bit as beautiful as the stories say, and of course Lady Veronica was there to greet me. It has been good seeing her again. There's already an ache in my heart from being so far from Oakhaven. Still, despite it all, the ruling Keatons are here in Arx, and where they go, so shall I.
