Recently I've been making more of a study of alchemy: a self-defense strategem, I say, as I watch family members craft compounds that may or may not be toxic and invite me to sample them.
(So far, I live.)
It's been quite a fascinating study, and I've learned from noted alchemists including Lady Mabelle and the Apothecary's College faculty, including Auda and Orick. Each of them has had their own approach and their own interests, approaching from different angles. My initial study was born out of a study of the special properties of the flora of Arvum, which we very much take for granted. Many of the teas and tinctures that we use may in fact be more efficacious than those of other lands, which is something I note with particular interest.
All of that aside, I have also had the opportunity to put my hand to blending a few compounds and creating a few scent formulations. I had the privilege of putting forth an entry in the recent contest hosted by the Dominus to create a new anointin oil -- and I was immediately taken by the idea of selecting ingredients for all the gods to create a single scent for Aion that captured them all.
(I confess that I may have tailored my entry to the Dominus's tastes as well, by centering Death's theme in the overall scent.)
The competition was remarkable, and I truly don't understand how some of those scents were created, which suggests I have more yet to learn. I was honored to be chosen in the end, and look forward with working with the Faith's alchemists to recreate the scent.
I may have been too enthusiastic and created too many pamphlets on the processes of distillation and enfleurage, however.
(So far, I live.)

Elloise, delighted by her greenhouse and workspace, has been seized with the bright idea to bring the glass paneled ceiling and roof into the rest of the Leary estate. She was envisioning rooms with their ceilings removed, roof removed, with only the glass to stand between us and the sky.
I am envisioning rain all over my books.
It sounds as though it would be cold in winter, and hot in summer, and I'm concerned about the potential for leaks as well. But perhaps combined with some of the clever retractable roofs I've seen -- maybe there might be potential there.

I love the snow! The way it hangs off the boughs of evergreens and the sharp, crisp scent in the air that it brings. It scintillates under the rays of the sun when freshly fallen. Who doesn't enjoy a warm mug of mulled wine next to a roaring fire after coming in from the cold?

With the new restrictions on all research and theoretical treatises to only the top twelve oldest and most experienced active members in the Society of Explorers, I've resigned my membership and surrendered all benefits of the Society in protest.
I can not conscionably support an organization that withholds information and that may indeed save a life from the most vulnerable among us -- brand new bright-eyed and bushy-tailed adventurers full of hope and enthusiasm.
As a Scholar, I understand it's a duty literally God-given to us to protect such knowledge, but that does not equate to deliberately gatekeeping it from those who would enormously benefit from having the slight leg up being peripherally involved with the Society once afforded.
...I understand this may well be a rather unpopular opinion and stance to take, but...well, that wouldn't be a particularly novel phenomenon for me, I think I'll survive.

I don't mention it enough, perhaps, but my daughter's now a couple of months past her first birthday and she just continues to grow and grow. It's fascinating watching her, a little person constantly looking out at the world around her. I only hope she comes to like reading. I have a lot of books for her to read.

An Addendum: My previous commentary was most certainly not intended as in some way inviting these foreign powers into our society. Nor that we should consider their offers of 'protection'. My commentary was that we ought not allow our resolve become arrogance, and they we need to consider our horizon carefully. We have survived much, and will continue to survive many other situations. However, we cannot be assured of surviving another Reckoning level attack.
