Relationship Note on Savio

The air was cold; the water dark, like the color of wine. I was aboard a cog as the ambush was sprung along with others from Arx. As the oars cut the waters to close the distance, hooks were thrown and the ships were bound together. An invitation to reave from Lord Haakon Eswynd was not something I was going to sail past, and I joined the first boarding party.

The slavers aboard the holk fought with desperation and were not unskilled with their weapons. The Eswynd forces, in which I am to be included along with the other peers and sailors from the Compact, fell upon them like orcas amid a herd of seals, inspired by the exhortations of Lady Medeia Eswynd. The Northlands Champion Lady Brianna Halfshav seemed as at home amid the chaos of battle as Imogene had been drinking tea beside her clavichord. Together, we put resisting slavers to death.

In the last moments before the enemies' surrender, a slaver made a swipe at my throat with a cutlass, which the reflexes and swordsmanship of Savio Pontelaeus kept from claiming my life. That was the second time Savio had saved me. His awareness in battle is uncanny, nor are his wits dulled by fear: poetry flowed from his lips even as we made ready to board the enemy vessel, and his insults to our attackers added scorching roasts to the blood-slicked deck. Savio's preferred weapon is a rapier which he wields with great agility, and by its name, "Diplomacy," one can get a sense of both the cleverness and aim of this talented adventurer from Tremorous.

My wounds were tended by the skillful medicine of Lady Medeia, and I returned to Arx with a fair share of silver captured from the slavers, in time to embarrass myself upon a beautiful golden mare named Cloud, as I met with Princess Adrienne Pravus for a morning ride.

Relationship Note on Orland

I enjoyed the autumn concert of the Bard's College. Its performances were varied, and included the inspired fiddling of Nina Atumndale and the comedic entertainment of Lord Orland and Savio Pontelaeus. It is hard not to be moved by mournful songs, yet even as I struggled with profound feelings, I soon found myself laughing at the flashing wit of the next performance.

The reaction of those in attendance to the high fashion of Gianna Delvecchio and Nina is best described as mania. A young courtier fainted after watching the Nightingale sweep past bedecked in jewels and peerless confidence. As if I were not inspired enough by the concert itself, I had visions as Pirate Lords do when I overheard Queen Symonesse pledging considerable largesse in support of the next concert, a prospect that I think thrills everyone who has ever been to a concert at which the bards of the college have performed.

I was surprised to learn that the Mockingbird Evaristo Arterius is a well known jewelry crafter, but had the good fortune to see a pendant he'd made worn by Nina. It is yet another reminder of vast talents of the college's members, and though I had experienced the poetic and musical skill of Savio in Pieros, this was also the first opportunity I had to watch my protege perform in concert. He was fantastic. Count Duarte also enjoyed the performance, and I think we share a belief that the young man, however much he may appear bored and uninterested at times, possesses fathomless potential which is everyday being realized.

Relationship Note on Sina

When I first came to Arx, Archscholar Sina wrote to me with words of welcome. She had been very close to Prisila and a good friend to my family, as she is to this day. At the symposium, where many gathered to discuss the war with Skal'daja, she offered the resources of the Archives of Vellichor, and her own stores of knowledge to aid the leaders of the Compact. Her hair is sable, and it is often adorned with beads of burnished brass. Her skin is fair, her voice clear and steady, neither shrill nor overly deep. She is stately in her demeanor, though I have seen her angry once - not in the blustering manner of those prone to wrath - but a species of frustration for one persisting in ignorance. She can be very warm around those she trusts. Her eyes are silver: a unique metallic hue that add to the sense that she sees things hidden since the foundation of the world.

Sina has honored me with her council, and sailed with me to the Saffron Chain, far from the safety of Arx, to apply her intellect to the protection of our realm. When in Tremorous, and those bribed by the pretender sought our lives to lay at the feet of their new master, the priestess stood with eminent courage, wielding her own gleaming blade beside her Templars.

Against the enemies of the Compact, who seek relentlessly to deprive humanity of all choice, all history, art and meaning, the Archscholar holds aloft the light of knowledge. I have been raised to be a man of action, and by experience find it difficult to trust, or to accept gifts given freely, nor am I one to watch idly as a friend risks her life. Yet I continue to learn from the wisest scholar among us, and find myself uttering fervent prayers that, however unworthy the petitioner, may yet still reach the ears of those who might shield our great hope amid her trials, or see her light transcend the mere season of one life and, like the stars, illuminate the way for all.

Relationship Note on Jacali

I came upon a shav vessel traveling between the Isle of Markets and Pieros. Taking us for a merchant ship, they attacked, and found not only a resolute defense, but Seraceni pirates boarding their vessel and slaying any who refused to surrender. We recovered coins stamped with the griffon similar to those we saw in Tremorous, and I had the opportunity to practice removing a heart from a fallen enemy who'd managed to hack old Hob's leg, before Anne stabbed him in the back. Hearts, it turns out, are harder to remove from humans than from other animals I've dressed, but an axe followed by a serrated dagger seems the best method. The alcohol we tried to preserve it in did not produce the desired effect.

I shall have to speak with the alchemists in Arx for a better solution. It's likely Jacali can help with something that will keep a heart fresh, though I'm certain I'll be subjected to her recitation of various self-granted titles intermixed with 'diddums.' I hope the archduchess and Prince Sebastian can appreciate the effort I am supplying to this endeavor. I expect to be named the silver baboon of Setarco or some other lofty title if all of this mutilation should pay off.

Relationship Note on Nina

I have had the opportunity to work with Nina Autumndale many times. She is a talented musician and tailor, and wears nothing that is not immediately a trend from Ischia to Setarco. Most recently she agreed to join me in hosting a private party in the palace at Braiga, where she carried it from one splendid moment to the next.

Nina's music creates ripples of welcome, swells of excitement, and brief lulls of contentment. To be in her company at Braiga is to be on a voyage of music, dance and merriment. I was pleased to see Prince Patrizio Pravus and Princess Valencia Velenosa dancing to the melodies she conducted.

Spellbound I watched my sister and cousin perform the blade dance of Ischia, and, though I had no part in it, I felt immense pride in the reaction of our guests who witnessed that alchemy of grace, ferocity and fire. Nor did Prince Sebastian and Princess Adrienne forgo the opportunity to display the unsurpassed elegance of Houses Pravus and Valardin in the arts of dance.

It was an honor to host Sir Corban Telmar, who dazzled the duelists and pirates of the Seraceni court with conduct giving irrefutable proof of the merits born from the chivalric tradition by which he lives. It is my hope that guests from Tor, New Hope, and the Fortezza di Iriscal enjoyed themselves as much as I did. I shall spare my dance partners the infamy of being associated with my name, but I am grateful for their charity, and only regret that my skill is leagues behind that of the rest of my family.

When scholars of the future seek answers to how the diverse peoples of the Compact came together to cast down the might of the false prophet and his minions, they will find amid the records of oaths, treaties and alliances, the name of Nina Autumndale, whose arts wove together disparate threads of power into an invincible tapestry of hope.

Relationship Note on Orland

My quill follows in the wake of my protege's.

1. What are you afraid of?

Losing my edge. Becoming a domesticated pet unworthy of the traditions with which I've been entrusted.

2. What are your opinions of honor?

Honor is living out one's sacred oath: humanity's greatest strength.

3. What path do you see for yourself?

A nightmare unleashed on the enemies of Seraceni, Pravus and the Compact. Prosperity for the people of Ischia. Fame. Wealth. A violent death and a better successor.

4. You can give one piece of advice to someone who really needs it. What do you tell them?

Take everything.

Relationship Note on Ciro

My cousin sent me a painting of Imogene at Braiga. He painted it from memory. Her hair, her eyes, the style of dress the expression of her features - it is a perfect likeness, and so far as I know, the only one in existence.

When I first saw the painting, I nearly dropped it. My vision blurred and tears streamed down my face in spite of my will. To hold in my hand the image of one whom I loved so dearly, who changed my life, and who brought so much to Ischia was an unthinkable blessing. I had not, nor will I ever forget her face - but to see her again in Ciro's painting brought back her voice, rich with the accents of the Oathlands, the smell of her hair, the sound of the clavichord that she so dearly loved to play.

There is no good man who does not wish to protect what he loves, and in that I have utterly failed. She was taken for granted all her life, and I never had the chance to convey to her how much she meant to me. When I enter the Shinning Lands, the gods will look on my life of infamy and violence, and see my greatest sin.

I was entrusted with true nobility, and was not there when she needed me most. Yet when I look on the one who took my hand, and joined me as the Countess of the March of Ischia, I feel an invincible resolve to live in such a way as would make her proud.

Thank you, Ciro. This is a gift I will cherish until my last breath.

Relationship Note on Adrienne

I am filled with gratitude when I think of who I could have been save for my education. I hold no one in contempt for their way of life: some pirates and reavers are content to read the book of nature, and never lay a quill to parchment save to make an X. But for those who thirst for knowledge, learning to read has been the first step in a great adventure.

I read little before being enrolled in the School of Steel and Silk - which is to say, not at all. Even in my junior years, I loved the sea far more than the tomes we were obligated to read. It was not until I was expelled that I truly began to appreciate the gift I had been given. As a captain in the Black Fleet, I would occasionally come across letters that bore some intelligence relevant to the designs of our enemies, but I also encountered books: histories, guides, poems, lives and stories. Some I kept, and in the listless doldrums I would read in the shade of the mast, until the rum or wine would make the letters too blurry to continue.

What I read did not always make sense to me, and it was not until Owen of Farhaven came into my service that I began to keep a journal and a commonplace book, after the fashion of the scholars of the Northlands. I would record what struck me as most interesting, as well as my questions. As a lord of House Seraceni, I had the time and space to reflect and organize my thoughts, and began to see patterns in the ebbs and flows of history, like those of the Ischian tides.

Since the union of Prince Sebastian and Princess Adrienne, a great scholar has come into our midst. She shares from the great fields of her research blooms of knowledge that, however dreadful in bringing greater awareness, sharpen the soul to meet its trials. Nor is she merely a researcher, but a philosopher also, whose mind seeks even the opinion of pirate lords on matters of morality and duty.

Knowledge is a keen weapon. It allows one to strike with greater accuracy, to bear with dignified resignation the failures and setbacks of mortal life, and to foresee a path to ever greater prosperity. Pirates are optimists: the vast horizon promises greater spoils, new friendships and undiscovered beauty. Such optimism has lead many to an early death, though those who have tempered it with such knowledge as the princess provides, find themselves well equipped for even the most perilous adventures.

Relationship Note on Savio

Before we set sail for Tremorus, Seraph Stilio of Pieros and Archscholar Sina offered benedictions on Journal Day. The Seraph is not bookish. He is brash and large, with a braided beard. He is beloved by his people, and his speech was eloquent in its simplicity. Shortly before he spoke the gathered crowd asked for a song. The seraph declined, and Whisper Selene offered one in his stead. In that setting, before all of our great trials, the beautiful voice of Selene united us, and fixed our imagination on all we might accomplish.

The next evening, I was preparing to extort the truth from a traitorous dog at the Hatted Rabbit Tavern in the Grand Bazaar. I was shocked to look up and see Princess Adrienne Pravus in company. For those familiar with the Princess, whose energy and virtues inspire deep respect, it is probably not hard to imagine how I felt about bringing a treacherous cur to beg for his life in her presence, and force him to make immediate amends for the slights he'd done me and the sailors of Ischia, or suffer an ignominious, agonizing and gruesome death.

The mood was transformed in an instant by the Bard Savio Pontelaeus, whose wit and song sparked joy wherever it was heard. He is a virtuoso in the arts of improvisation, and his songs seem effortless, yet are pleasing and exciting to hear. But I was wrong to think that I should be in debt to Savio solely for his talent in music, for not long after his performance in the Hatted Rabbit, I was engaged in a fight to the death. Savio's rapier stuck away a blade that otherwise would have opened my throat. His physical reflexes vie with his wit in sharpness. Little recompense it may be to the talented musician and duelist, as the vast horde of those who wish me dead now howl for his blood, but he has earned my gratitude and respect.

Relationship Note on Tatyana

Our mission in the Isle of Markets hinged on Lady Tatyana Grimhall's ability to forge a legal code capable of managing extremely disparate elements of a large port in the Saffron Chain: Seraceni and Pravosi importers and exporters, prodigal craftsfolk, smugglers, pirates returning with plunder, and local agricultural traders. Anne had grumbled about the quantity of tomes Lady Grimhall brought aboard The Osprey that had to be stored in water tight containers - but those efforts were not in vain.

Lord Ciro and Lord Orland were able to convince a number of influential traders to share much about the markets with Lady Tatyana. From this, and carefully following precedent - both in the traditions of Ischia as well as those used elsewhere in the Lyceum, the Mourning Isles and the Compact - she carefully constructed laws that promised fairness and prosperity to many. Such laws were sorely needed in the Isle of Markets, where warring factions squeezed all they could from the people, lining their own pockets until they were swallowed by some vicious rival. For too long the governors of Seraceni had turned a blind eye to the port, in order to defend against the Gray Woman and the Skal'dajans, but with Lady Tatyana's laws, there is a new order - one that respects the spirit of Ischia and House Seraceni, leaving the greatest share of freedom, with severe consequences for those who violate what the oaths of our vassals and traders must hold sacred.

I had the privilege of visiting Duchess Vanora and Lady Tatyana with Lord Orland. It is no secret that I hold House Grimhall in high esteem as a seafaring House who has weathered the storms of change with dignity, intelligence, and resilience. The hospitality and company of the Duchess of Grihem's Point is a great pleasure, and I was happy to share with her the accomplishments of her kin. In company, Lady Tatyana is the perfect exemplar of Thraxian nobility, but if one manages to catch her in the right moment, one finds wit, good humor, and courage. It is little wonder, after getting to know Lady Tatyana, that the nobility of the Compact are so inclined to seek unions with the scions of House Grimhall.

Relationship Note on Raja

I'd worked with Raja when the whirlpool remained in the harbor, and the people of Arx were rioting. She and her family were among those who took decisive action to see that people with the most need did not starve. The fruit and salted fish of Ischia found their way into the hands of the desperate - and not the crooked profiteers - by Raja's expertise and connections.

When one of my own pirates betrayed her oath, Raja was among those who hunted her down. There is a story told of Raja by Captain Tancred - and it is worth noting here that Tancred, unlike Anne, who will embellish any story to make it more appealing for her audience, hates to be the center of attention, and thus speaks only facts, and those very reluctantly. By this good man's account, Raja Culler leapt aboard the betrayer's vessel while Lord Ian was engaged with several members of the crew. She apparently took down one of their best, and clove his head from his body. She raised the blood-spattered trophy high into the air, and her roar terrified the remaining sailors, who threw down their weapons and either surrendered or leapt overboard, lest they be the next to fall to her wrath.

Yet the terrors inspired by Raja are reserved for those who deserve them, and the Liberator did me the honor of accompanying me to our gala in the Golden Hart. Dressed in a gown tailored by the gifted Whisper Ilira, Raja shown brilliantly, and danced with her kin and friends among the great peers of Arx, while Duke Harlan displayed immense generosity, taste and respect for his wife, when he donated a vast sum to acquire the pride of Ischian jewelers for Duchess Lisebet Ashford.

In the struggle to bring order out of chaos, I asked for Raja's help, and she agreed. She spoke to the traders and sailors of the Isle of Markets with candor, and spoke to my enemies in the elemental language of fear. As the wealth of the Saffron Chain pours into Arx through the trusted traders of the Cullers and Seraceni, I raise my glass to Raja, and look forward to our next adventure.

When I first met with Lord Orland Amadeo, he spoke with sincerity and honesty. He is adventurous and intelligent. Though perhaps lacking confidence, he is extremely reliable. His features are common, but uncoarse, symmetrical and possessed of a peculiar charm.

I have not worked with Lord Orland for long, but he is quickly becoming an indispensable friend. Beware those who might pass over this young lord, like so many ships over the surface of the sea. I will say no more on this account, save that those who underestimate him do so at their own peril.

Relationship Note on Sebastian

I visited Saik Tower by invitation of Lady Medeia Eswynd to celebrate the union of Baroness Lucita and Baron Talwyn. The music chamber of the tower is comfortable, and is home to a magnificent clavichord gifted to the baroness by Duke Aiden Rubino.

I was happy to see Count Duarte, Lord Orland and Prince Sebastian. It is difficult to be in the company of Count Duarte and not enjoy one's self. He is a nobleman of energy and good humor. His mind is discerning, his conversation interesting, and he keeps company with artists of genius like Messere Caprice and Prince Sebastian.

Prince Sebastian Pravus is well known as an artist, and I count myself a great admirer of his work, though I remain a greater admirer of his leadership. The amount of power he wields by the decree of the Archduchess is staggering, but his manner is charismatic and courtly. He is neither too trusting, nor too incredulous, and can speak eloquently on fashion, art or politics.

I have met with Archduchess Belladonna privately once, and Prince Sebastian many times. He has shown understanding when others have shown scorn. He has offered help in times of need, and he is highly organized. I suspect there are many black journals written to Vellichor describing an honest, if discreet, loathing for the representative of their liege. I doubt this is case with the nobility of House Pravus. He treats his vassals with respect, and has earned by merit what he could demand by privilege. His accomplishments speak to his abilities, and much of his story remains unwritten.

Lady Medeia's gatherings are not to be missed. To be among her guests is to drink from the fountain of life, and dance among the luminaries of our age. One day she will realize the mistake of summoning a pirate lord to such events, but until that time, I will continue to look forward to her invitations.

Relationship Note on Reese

Owen asked to accompany me to visit Princess Reese Grayson. I had written for an audience hoping to gain some advice, but Owen had heard that the princess's watchtower contains a library and gallery with some of the rarest books and paintings.

I met the princess as she was curled up on a couch. I have not the words to describe her beauty. She has golden hair, eyes the color of the Saffron Sea, and movements both supple and graceful, but her strength lies at its core. She is honest, and says what she thinks and feels along with her reasons. Her dimples show when she smiles, and her cheeks are prone to color when she is touched by passion. She is humble, yet regal in a manner that commands respect. Her martial prowess is beyond question, and her manner of teaching is direct and challenging, but not devoid of warmth and encouragement.

I had the lowest opinion of knights before I came to Arx. With the exception of Sir Ari, I'd found them pompous, sanctimonious and inefficient. My experiences in Arx have wholly changed that view. My combat training, with the exception of that granted by the Warchief of House Redrain, has come entirely from knights: Dame Alexis, Sir Jeffeth, Lady Brigid and Princess Reese. Though I confess I have absolutely no desire to give up my life of raiding, pleasure seeking and general dissipation to join a knightly order, I have come to recognize the knights of the Compact as dedicated warriors, who strive, in their way, to bring honor to Gloria and their Houses.

Perhaps I shall have to take back all of those things I said about Porter.

Owen and I left Princess Reese's watchtower wiser and more prepared for what we will face. She has my gratitude, and we look forward to our next opportunity to take advantage of her hospitality.

Relationship Note on Allegra

The Compact prepares for war. No efforts are spared to prepare our sailors and or ships. Provisions must be organized, weapons maintained, ships tarred, and orders conveyed for the time when we will risk our lives for our freedom.

Among those who have been invaluable to this effort is Princess Allegra Pravus. I visited her office recently to find her combing through a stack of records, issuing missives and orders that form the backbone of our wartime operation. We spoke a while, and she gave me a gift, and told me that her prayers are with me, and that I should come home safely.

It is difficult to describe the power the princess's words and actions hold for me. The war we are fighting is a spiritual war. The first hints of this were given to me by Princess Damiana, though I did not understand it until I spoke with Functionary Xia of the Undying Empire.

The prayers of our friends are our weapons and armor. Those who speak to the great powers of Elysia on our behalf strengthen our resolve and sharpen our focus. We soon sail against a future that threatens all we love with slavery - to be made tools under the whip of a tyrant, but we are not alone.

Relationship Note on Ilira

I recently met with someone I hold in high esteem. She visited the manor on a splendid summer evening, and shared a drink beside the clavichord. Being in the presence of that enchanting reminder of my wife may have influenced by mood, but my guest, in contrast to many of power whom I encounter, possess some imperishable fire. There is a great warmth felt by those she chooses to let beside that flame, and in pleasing conversation, I found myself forgetting all save a moment of shared humanity. A quick word, however, shattered that dream, and I was, again, the instrument of war that I shall always be, whether reviled or held sacred for my purpose.

Such is the fate of all nobles who strive to keep their oaths.

I later visited the Shrine of the Thirteenth to reflect on the letter of Princess Sorrel, and was met by Sister Giada. She spoke with me, and in her wisdom set me to an exercise that, in pursuing, I have found myself becoming an ever more prefect instrument, a sharper sword in the hands of Prince Sebastian, Princess Lucrezia and the Archduchess.

Yet I opened a missive recently inviting me to the Empyrean, where I spoke a while with the Whisper Ilira. I imagine that if a life of war does not make me a monster, it will be on account of those words from the lips of a Whisper reminding me what I'm fighting for, what can be gained with victory, and the pleasure of stolen moments between friends.

Owen and the Seraceni scholars have collected, to the best of their abilities, the strategies of our greatest naval commanders, among them Lord Wash Kennex, the greatest sailor of our generation, Baroness Calla Vaevici, Duke Valdemar Grimhall, Lord Teague Charon, Lord Vicarin Saik, Baroness Ember Redreef, Count Duarte Amadeo, Lord Aedric Blackshore and Princess Lucrezia Pravus. These folios contain the collective knowledge of trade winds, currents, islands, supply caches and every known waterway between Arvum and the Saffron Chain. They include versatile strategies of attack and defense, born of minds who have seen countless battles at sea, and they are available to every naval commander of the Compact who should request it, so long as they vow to keep it secure.

Those who will be working closely with the Faith are encouraged to contact Carnifex Preston or Princess Damiana Valardin, who spoke at the symposium with great clarity and purpose.

Commanders seeking the aid of Mercies and physicians may contact Lady Eirene Riven or Sister Giada Morello, and those seeking knowledge on Eurus, Skal'daja, or Alaric III are encouraged to seek an audience with Archscholar Sina.

We are grateful to the intelligence shared by Lord Mirk and Duchess Khanne Halfshav, for the willingness of the Spirit Walkers to join us at sea, and to High Lord Victus Thrax, whose people have suffered much in the greater war for freedom, and who has chosen to bring the might of the Thraxian fleet to the defense of the Compact.
