The scent of apples on the breezes reminds me of the joys autumn brings. Good Harvest celebrates the months of hard work, the wondrous results by devotion, and the promise of all things made of apple (at least for me).

As winter nears, the season affords us more moments spent indoors in the good company of loved ones and friends. So let us prepare to enrich our minds and commune in the solace of ourselves -- lending us time to heal and look forward to spring and rebirth.

Thank you, Highlord and His Majesty, for giving this young Legate a chance to reach new heights as well as seeing and learning a new perspective. The next time, I bet Princess-Consort Alarissa can find the most suitable spot for sea exploration. More fishing?

Hm. I have this desire for one of Goodwoman Symanthe's honey loaves. Her loaf rescued a child so weary that a taste brought tears to her eyes. I will never forget that day when I could eat again after so long without. I have tried myself to make such a loaf without success. There's a serenity and care she kneads into her dough.

Perhaps one day I shall have another bite. It would be . . . lovely.

In the weeks before the Battle at Sungreet, Baroness Lucita and Prince Talwyn led a song so uplifting that the locals, including the thralls, sang it in the streets. The parish continued to return, to listen, learn, and know the love of our pantheon. Sister Estelle assured our faithful, tending with gentle care over any injury or need of counsel. Archlector Brigida educated a wayward Seraph on the duties expected of a godsworn -- and more at great length.

I'd like to share in my journals the very song the Baroness and His Highness taught. A tapestry of this song resides at the Shrine of Sungreet in memory of those times -- of hope and love. May others learn it and teach others.

A SONG OF HOPE
~A catchy song designed to fall within a vocal range making it easy for many to sing. Composed October 1012 by Baroness-Regent Lucita Saik~

It was early in the morning and the sun had not risen high
As roosters were a calling 'come look at this gorgeous sky'.
The scents of breakfast cooking drifted gently on the air
And as the day is started, hope can be found everywhere.

The hammers in the forges a clanging out a rhythmic song
Blend with rattling of merchant carts as they roll along.
Loud brokers and shoppers haggle as their trading thrives.
Sounds in the Arvum streets echo the freedom of our lives.

We sing of hope and joy and loyalty and life
We sing of faith and courage and freedom from strife.

The laughter of the children full of mischief as they play
And a newborn baby's lusty cry gives hope for which we pray.
There's joy and hope found in each of the tasks that we do,
And in strength of our allies and friendships as they grew.

'Tis choice guides our actions. 'Tis choice guides our course
Our honesty and loyalties strengthen our hope at its source.
'Tis hopes and dreams that shape us as we go our varied ways
As faith and hope grow deeper with the steady passing days.

We sing of hope and joy and loyalty and life
We sing of faith and courage and freedom from strife.

The thud of spears and arrows as the knights and Templars drill
Are a promise of protecting freedom if that be our Gods' will
The joyful songs that echo in the temples and in the shrines
Are filled with hope and faith that keeps freedom in our minds.

Oh listen carefully to our words, let loose a confining chain
There's better ways than slavery where captive people strain.
Give hopeful hearts and busy hands a choice that they can make
Consider all the choices there are when freedom is at stake.

We sing of hope and joy and loyalty and life.
We sing of faith and courage and freedom from strife.

There has been a budding of a theological point which drew my attention for it is not a teaching by the Faith. In truth, every faithful devotee, especially of the orthodox, are taught from childhood that virtue is its own reward.

By the fidelity of our oaths shows honorability and ensures our words can be trusted. Through our fealty oaths and alliances by marriage in the Compact are strengthened. These are among the virtuous. These are to be admired.

The aspirational ideals of our gods, their virtues are to what we strive toward.

It is not for any physical or metaphysical reward.

For anyone who would preach such truly concerns me for they miss the true teachings of our pantheon. Everyone deserves the grace of the pantheon, whether they wear a crown or beg for coppers in the Lower Boroughs.

Grief can be a very troubling and painful emotion. Each of us responds in widely different ways. And assuredly, there is no right or wrong way to grieve. What we'd ask or what anyone would ask, is for compassion toward those suffering from a loss. The sting I can say is not one easily healed, if at all.

Years have passed since I wrote this. I do not claim to be a poet or skilled writer. All I can say, is to this very day, I still step out onto that bridge at the crack of dawn to let the sun warm me as I remember fondly of my fallen loved ones.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The chill of the new day tickles at my bare arms
Upon a bridge, I stare out across the vast field and river

Hello, I say, calling out to the winds
Good morrow, I cry, beckoning for a reply

Winds rustle as wildflowers sway
The butterflies flutter to rest on petals
As the bees harmonize their greeting

Good day

Trickles of water shed from my eyes
And a full heart empties, broken anew
As this discovered wonder waken memories
Tears shed for those long gone
To those smiles and friendly faces passed away

Eventide tumbles in a morning dance with ember
Rosy pink and dandelion light warms my cheeks
Softly, a whisper at my ear assures

See the wonder before you
Remember and feel unconditionally
Of their light and grace
For their memories carry on
It is a heartbeat within you

For love is never far away

And so, I whisper back
Thank you mama, papa
Say hello to my sisters and brothers
Hug my friends long returned

You're never far away from me

I'll hold you in my heart

Thank you to everyone who has shown me how beautiful the love of the pantheon is to them. For every offering, I realized how valuable each of our voices are and how unique our messages became that when combined can be -- a shining beacon of hope.

To you, thank you. My private words should have been delivered to each of you individually for words are not enough to show my gratitude.

Relationship Note on Lucita

I am spoiled by the Baroness. Every once in a while, a messenger arrives with new sheet music and a song that Baroness Lucita has composed and written. I believe my bookcase is mainly filled by her works. Soon, a weaver will have completed a tapestry that features one of her songs. I cannot wait to display it in my office.

Baroness Lucita is among the stars -- dazzling to hear her sing and moved by her mandolin playing. I truly am honored to be afford the opportunity for a private musical session. And I cannot wait until our next project that she's inspired me to pursue.

Relationship Note on Josephine

I sit here with a ring and admire its unique beauty. The song that its jeweler described awakens many questions -- or rather has sparked inspiration and wonderment. Each detail has been meticulously chosen to visually weave the story and song, much as a storyteller at the hearth in the middle of winter. Captivating. It certainly has had me re-opening "Divine Inspirations of Arx" that former Guildmaster Joscelin, Archlector Wylla, and many of the great crafters and singers such as Disciple Hana, Baroness Lucita, Dame Morrighan, Goodwoman Lottie, and Dame Alexis helped create. I shall have to add another entry and this one for Guildmaster Josephine and her iridescite ring.

If anyone has not seen the talents by Guildmaster Josephine, I encourage you to visit her shop and ask about her crafting, listen as you learn what creates each piece of jewelry, and admire a talent unique unto her own.

And then I encourage you to make it a habit to do the same with any encountered artisan in the city, nay, across the Compact. Let them know what alights your senses, what has provoked thought, or inspired action. Then thank them as you would a bard, poet, or entertainer for their time and talent. You never know what hardships each person has faced to produce a song, poem, performance, even craft -- for it may drain them upon completion.

So be the person today who brings a smile upon someone's face. Be thankful for those inspired by Jayus for our world is made brighter, vivid of color, and full of wonderment.

Sister Estelle said it best to express my sentiments, that fear cannot "keep us from doing our part in bettering the world."

These days it is no surprise that I haven't been discovered outside the walls of the Rectory. I nary have left this office save a few hours to sleep.

This afternoon, at the behest of my old friend, for one should heed a Dame, I permitted myself time with a book of tales. Nearly every Oathlander child may have been read from this book of dashing knights, chivalry, and near impossible quests. What struck me today was the ongoing theme of knights venturing forth into the woods to seek the wizened old man or woman for direction when lost or afraid.

I shut it and glanced to my friend, then asked -- Why haven't these wizened ones ever told these knights no one is going to make the quest easy. In fact, cease waiting for someone to tell you what the right thing to do is.

Each of our knights are smart. What do they think?

I believe whenever we find ourselves alone in the dark, we are compelled to seek comfort in the wise and caring. It's a security to ease our shaken beliefs or fears.

In reality, the answer was right there, within ourselves, but we have to permit ourselves the opportunity to slow down and listen before venturing forth to act.

Perhaps it is time for me to accept this lesson.

(Transcribed by Disciple Ismay)

A Threaded Sermon held by Legate Ailith
Day 12 of Month 8 in 1010 AR
Great Cathedral

Over a thousand years ago, five separate leaders entered a hall. A decision was made that bound them together in unity to this very present. In the words of Dominus Tin, witness and representative of the Faith, -- ' ... and so the four knelt to King Alar of House Grayson, with Queen Sugan of the West kneeling first. Followed by Queen Valeria Redrain of the North. Then Grand Duchess of the New Lyceum Procella Pravus. And finally King Aposyr Thrax of the Mourning Isles.

[Legate Ailith slowly wove a stark silk blue thread with a thin braid of white and gold, then applied a gray woolen thread, finely plied, followed by a vibrant purple thread, and then a blood-stained red thread. A green thread, the fifth and final thread, was woven between the four threads, linking it to the main rope of white and gold.]

And each then spoke as follows: 'Before the gods, I swear my life, my house, and my sacred honor to our Compact. I swear that when the Compact calls me to war, I will answer. I name Alar of House Grayson my king, and swear my leal service to him.' And thusly, the Compact was born and the five kingdoms made one.

To make an oath before the Gods, and then knowingly break that Oath is unthinkable. Our Honor is reliant upon our Fidelity to our sworn word. Over time, these leaders made oaths with other Houses -- from liege to vassal. Valardin, Redrain, Lyceum, Thrax, Grayson, Crownsworn, Godsworn -- more people made oaths and pledged to a fealty. Each of us uniquely part of this union.

[The disciples on either side of the Legate presented new baskets, five in all, and together they wove new threads with the rope to create a longer and thicker one.]

At other times, new people, even elves, became known to us. Through mediation and diplomacy, our allies could see how we held ourselves accountable to our sworn word. That the words fidelity and honor were linked to our Faith, to our bond with the Gods. By this understanding, a bit of trust was forged and contracts could be made.

[The Legate pulled a hot pink thread, along with a pale blue with sandy bits, and an assortment of other colored threads -- and added those threads to the rope. She hooked one end of the rope to the edge of the curtain behind the main altar, pulled to cause the curtain to gradually rise. Behind the curtain was a multi-colored tapestry that consumed the majority of the shrine's wall. The wild assortment of gradients and hues did not make logical sense. The tapestry should have been garish to the eyes. But when observed as a whole, the unique colors blended and the image became clear -- thousands and thousands of individual threads were plied together, then woven to create the map of the entire Compact.]

For the past months, many of you have kindly donated a thread. From King to an orphan, from templar to champion, from leader to vassal, from traveler to farmer, from ally to abandoned. Each of us has created the Compact. But as we pull and tug at our threads, our fidelity and honor is weakened by oaths broken, alliances fallen and forgotten, wars declared, and lives lost. We attempt to mend and repair the damage made.

[Disciples added golden threads; their needles wove along the tapestry to highlight patches such as those by Stormwall, Darkwater Reach, and other regions impacted by war and ruin over the recent and ancient years. Gradually, interlocking rings by these golden threads glistened.]

When one of us falls, we shall endeavor to lift another up, mending, adapting, and re-shaping ourselves, but the weave becomes stronger than most.

This great and glorious Compact has withstood so much over a thousand years. We have this moment not to fold and to show any doubters that in our unity and our Faith, that the fidelity and honoring of our oaths has woven a solemn strength. We have proven that we shall rise and endure. And by the grace of the Pantheon, by our unity, we stand. This is us.

I offer you this opportunity now -- to approach and renew your oath. Be it in the Compact, be it to your liege or vassal, be it to the Gods themselves. Come. Join me. And let the Gods hear our prayer. Let them be riveted by our fidelity. Have them hear our Compact.

I am closer to achieving what I envisioned for this sermon. And I am humbled by everyone who chose to support and exchanged freely a single thread. There were many who generously gave beyond, even giving up of their own rare and extraordinary merchandise.

Realists may find me silly - 'It is only a single thread, no need to be humbled by what's effectively worthless.' All will be revealed in time. And perhaps, then, I hope what is seen as a cast-aside thread means much more.

To those who I have missed in asking, if you wish to support a Legate's sermon -- though mysterious and quite unusual by asking -- all I ask is a single thread from your personage. One thread. It needn't hold any meaning. It can be from a favorite garment or a moment in your life that changed all for the better.

It is but a thread.

For now.
