Relationship Note on Tescelina
When we first met, we did not get along. You embodied your ideals with a countenance as cold and majestic as the Everwinter. I was fire and warmth, clinging desperately to mine. You chided me once for my foolishness in addressing the stars, as those who imagine life in all things sometimes do, and yet we both could not look away from their brilliance. In parting, you smiled - rare, radiant and beautiful.
Your sword skill was alive with fluidity and grace. As we traveled, our differences became strengths. You became someone I respected and trusted: a comrade in arms and a friend.
In my nightmares of Sungreet, when the men and women of Stormwall, who trained with me since I was a boy, are dying, and my rage and hate begin to well up into a black despair - then do I glance to my right and see you locked in a mortal duel with the Reviled Master. Each time in my dream I fight desperately to reach you - but I can never change anything. You always become a brilliant light.

Relationship Note on Tescelina
News of Tescelina Wyrmguard's passing caught up to my party on the way south, the day before Arx came into sight on the distant horizon. I remember the tiny, countless pinpricks of starlight in the sky overhead as the sun sank. We had talked once about those bright, clear stars in the north, seen from the height of Aviaron's Peak, but we never did make that journey together to see them. It's so common to promise journeys and delights to others, and never manage to bring them to fruition. I regret that now.
I didn't know her well enough to mourn. But I pray for her family's peace, and smile to think that she has found her own.

I've struggled with what to put to paper after these momentous events overlapped so cleanly with a personal matter that recently came to resolution.
I didn't know well those who noteworthy souls who were lost, other than finding a great deal of admiration in the swordplay of Tescelina - I'd hoped to test myself against that sword, because that's how I find I best come to know a person. In the sands, you learn the measure of a person, or at least get a deep glance into what you can't often glean by a courteous bow or handshake.
I wish I'd had that chance.

When I first arrived back in Arx, scarcely a day went by when I didn't hear about how much your presence in particular had touched another heart, in so many walks of life. Needless to say, I was inspired by you as well. I have heard you went down fighting as a Wyrmguard should. Would that it did not have to happen at all. You were loved by many and will be missed by us all within these halls.

In the smallest city on the farthest shore, a beggar follows me home and demands a story. I gather words in my cupped hands like water scooped from a mountain spring and remind her that when we were girls, the seraphim stole me onto a caravel travelling beyond the coast. "They forbade me to leave my cabin at night, but I snuck to the deck and discovered glittering stars not only in the sky, but in the sea as well, in the air all around. We sailed through a fog of starlight."
Behind your ship, Mistress, the wake spreads so artfully that every ripple follows a comet's path, and your masts and sails repeat the order of the constellations. Your captain's log faithfully corresponds to the firmament, and thus the ship and the sky always reflect each other precisely.
In praising your crew, the beggar says, "Feeling yourselves part of an undying heaven, gears in a meticulous astrological clock, you take care not to make the slightest change in your ship and your habits. This is the only place I know where the wise remain motionless in time. The only place where eternity exists."
Your officers stare at one another, dumbfounded by the wretch's ignorance. To their trained eyes, the novelty of every moment is obvious: the whistle of a midshipwoman newly arrived on her watch, the arrhythmic slap of the dinghy against the starboard hull.
"Our ship and our stars correspond so perfectly that any change on the deck is entangled with a similar transformation in the firmament. The heavens are not unchanging, and neither are we. Quite the opposite; we are fated by the one who defeated Skald to never stop choosing, never stop changing. That is why our most precious cargo is not the tonnage of butterfly-silk or dragon-milk, but the girl in the steward's cabin who, having read all her books, sneaks to the deck every night and raises stars from the waves."

How lovely it was to meet Lady Tescelina at the Gauntlet the other day. I was able to introduce her to a friend of mine and share a little bit about history she was interested in. The Wyrmguards are long allies of my ancestral family, and dear personal friends as well.
