Relationship Note on Rhea

Marquessa Rhea Acheron. She rescued me and my sister from the ruins of Cliffmore. Moreso my sister. I was married off before the fall of the Barony, but she took me back in when I had nowhere else to go after my husband died. I owe her everything.

If we were both turtles and Rhea fell onto her back, I would go in my shell.

Relationship Note on Rhea

Rhea is the leader of House Acheron. Her tongue: Sharp. Her wit: Unquestionable. Yet no one can doubt that Rhea cares only about the people in Aviaron's Peak and their well being.

If the heralds can proclaim that Lord So-and-so is the Minister of Cattle in the Barony of Nowherestorm, how hard do you think it is to get them to proclaim a GREAT and VERY RESPECTABLE Grayhope birth?

Relationship Note on Rhea

We reproach Marach the Heretical because each of his tales illuminates the empire of secrets without showing us the rolling dreams that stretch between one secret and another: a landscape of trout ponds, fields of ripening rye, oak forests beloved of truffle pigs, farmyards where children throw sticks for panting dogs.

The heretic answers us with a story. In the streets of my illustrious city, he says, I met once a goatherd driving a tinkling flock along the walls.

"Stranger blessed by Elysium," the goatherd called to me, leaning on her staff, "can you tell me the name of the city in which we are?"

"May the pantheon accompany you!" I cried. "How can you fail to recognize the illustrious city of Arx, home to the Creature who feeds upon certainty and grows ever greater?"

"Bear with me," the woman answered. "I am a merely a wandering god, exiled from my own land by holy seers who speak in my name. Sometimes my goats and I have to pass through the secret cities, but we are unable to distinguish them. Ask me the names of the grazing lands: I know them all, the Meadow Where Children Play, the Green Slope of Love Renewed, the Shadowed Grass In Which Sisters Braid Each Other's Hair. Cities have no name for me: they are places without leaves, separating one kindness from another, where my goats are frightened at street corners and scatter."

"I am the opposite of you," I said. "I recognize only secrets and cannot distinguish what lies between them. In the dreaming places, each child's laugh and lover's caress appears, to my eyes, identical to every other laugh and kiss."

"And what of dreams?"

"I have no need of the soft sentiments that stretch between hard truths," I said, drawing my robes of office closer, "between the rituals of the Art and the revelations of the past. I collect secrets and facts in the service of humanity, to protect us against the enemy."

"You feed upon them," the goatherd said, "and grow ever greater."

* * *

Marach's 63rd heresy is this: 'A faith that bars the doors to the houses of the gods is not a true faith.'
His 71st: 'A teacher who declares one teaching true and another false is false; this I declare.'
His 108th: 'Love each other, that's all, you spavined numb-gizzards! Hold your friend when he weeps, dance when she sings! This isn't hard. You can't command a dream, you can't *win* a dream. Stop trying! Titles mean nothing in dreams: riches and strength and knowledge turn into daisies stretching toward the sun. We can't seize the reins of the Dream like a cruel rider on a beaten nag. Let go, let go, let go. Kindness requires more courage than cruelty, love requires more courage than power. The Dream carries us like twigs in a current, heedless of our feeble attempts to seize the water in our fists and shape the river. Just float, you flax-embossed turdlings! Float!'

Relationship Note on Rhea

It feels as though we are finally making up for having spent the balance of our formative years apart. My sister has magnanimously and gener-ificently elected to bring to close a personal history of mine that vaguely vexes me still. Basically, every time I've ever tripped is probably because I'm worried about this most likely! I should stop riling new household staff into being afraid of her so -err- best not stop all at once.

Relationship Note on Rhea

My most thoughtful, gracious and creative Lady is now wed! I was privileged to see her rise from Lady to Marquessa, and now I have had a hand in seeing her take the next step in this life, which is truly a blessing. I'm fortunate to have served her as lady's maid and more fortunate to have her as a friend.

Addendum: This was not a paid endorsement of the Marquessa in question. I truly do just like her that much and am not angling to have at least one child named after me.

Post-Addendum Addendum: Though if she did, I would be very, very honoured.

Relationship Note on Rhea

Lady Rhea Acheron, Marquessa of Aviaron’s Peak, has become my husband’s patron. Which I think is going to do him a lot of good. He needs help with many things sometimes, and I don’t always know how to do it if it can’t be approached by constructive yelling. As for the Marquessa herself, she's a rather grand Northern lady who seems to be dealing competently with the domain she rules and the people she manages, even if she didn’t expect to have to take charge of it. I like her, and the other Acheron folk, and look forward to more dinners. Their house is so interesting! And they serve good whiskey, which always makes better friends.

Relationship Note on Rhea

We didn't have the privilege of growing up together. Faced with one another now and in such close proximity, that's lent to every kind of new miscommunication. We have our moments, though. Spooky flashes wherein... my sister actually makes sense.

May they grow more frequent, and longer in duration.

Relationship Note on Rhea

I've never met this woman before in my life. But I once saw her brother eat an entire sandwich by unhinging his jaw and swallowing it like a snake.

No, I'm not making that up!

Anyway, I'll continue to do my best to make sure he doesn't get hurt and remembers to take small bites.

Dueling with bows can be interesting! It depends on how tricky you make the target to hit. A difficult target where even the most accomplished archer struggles and has to take multiple shots can be fun to watch, seeing those arrows sail so close yet miss their mark, wondering who will land the hit.

While I adore him to pieces as one of the newest members of the Iron Guard, I beg you, please do not give him anything sharp.

He lost to a sofa.

I fear he might do worse, and I speak with authority, as I often have troubles with sharp objects.

Relationship Note on Rhea

Have you... have you ever heard anything at all about me? Truly? Is this your first experience? How droll.

Let me assure you, my people are well aware of my actions. They are also well aware that I will continue to provide for them, as I have done, through all the scandals that have touched this House. We are not called the 'Sins', for nothing.

And.. aren't you from one of those minor Nightgold branches that nobody heard anything about until you got into so much trouble that you were being sent away to some remote place where you couldn't damage your family's reputation anymore? And yet.. here you are... auspiciously Marquessa to a dead House left behind by a Prince. A -Lycene- Prince, I might add. How amusing that you're attempting to proselytize to -anyone- on proper behavior.

Except I did. I did say that he was taken into custody. After the Convocation, the Iron Guard took Fawkhul into custody. Plain and simple. And no matter how you want to 'pretty' it up, Fawkhul had the title of Dominus removed from him. And given that I knew your cousin FAR better, and more intimately, than you ever could... I'll thank you to cease speaking on what he would have wanted. You clearly knew him not at all.

Relationship Note on Rhea

Then perhaps, my dear, you should leave the accounting to those of us who were actually present in the city and knew all the parties involved, instead of recollecting from a single written statement?

Esera was not absolved when she was killed, she had gone to meet the Dominus on Sovereign Bridge, to seek her absolution. When her words were not what the Dominus wanted to hear, he grew wrathful and pushed her from the bridge. The Dominus then fled to the rectory while the Convocation was called, with the Iron Guard standing just outside. With a new Dominus named, Fawkhul was stripped of his own title and taken into custody by the Iron Guard, as lead by Prince Ainsley Grayson and Prince Laric Grayson. From there, well... nobody quite knows. Or if they do, they aren't saying. But he wasn't given trial, nor sentenced, there was no execution. He simply disappeared.

The other High Lords, again, either paid their penance or, in some cases, died and their replacements had not been excommunicated in the first place.
