Relationship Note on Calypso
Captain Veena's corpse now swings above the entrance of the fortified lagoon of Morisco beneath a carved driftwood sign that reads, 'Death to Slavers.' She was intelligent, willful and a talented seawoman, who fought with distinction in the Battle of Setarco and in the battles for the Isle al'Aswaq. She was apparently interrogated by Lord Ian Kennex after her capture, and the report from Captain Tancred describes Veena's selling people of the Lowers of Arx to the Skal'dajans, as being motivated by her desperation to buy back her captured crew.
Sad reflections followed, and, to sink them to the depths, I visited the Black Fox upon returning to Arx. Happily, I encountered Lady Thea among those present and a crass but good-humored conversation was shared, until the arrival of Duchess Calypso. She was furious with me, and some heated words were exchanged, but I must here record my apology and some explanation not irrelevant to my reflections upon the fate of Captain Veena.
I am sorry, Duchess, for any disrespect to your cousin from me or my free-sailing pirates. The painting is not used for the purposes your outrage supposes. Ischia is full of beautiful people, and any one of them might provide a form for lusty dreams. The reason the crew of The Runner holds Lady Thea in such high esteem is because of her skill and courage. She has sailed with us against the slavers of the Chain, saved the lives of many - including my own - with her skill in medicine, and brought the traitors among us to justice. She is revered among our crews by merit, and when the jaws of death gape before the men and women of The Runner, amid all the horrors of naval war with our great enemy, they will look upon one whom they respect and take courage.
There is much humor and baseness among those who spend their short lives at sea in search of plunder and fame. We mean no offense for our lack of decorum amid close friends, and what's said in our wildest moments, should not be understood to be the thoughts we hold in our hearts and convey to our gods.

Watched a contest down on the beach just after sunset between the Duchess Malvici and another member of her family. It was a curious thing as I was not sure where the competition started or what the winner hoped to gain. The ending was even more interesting as the Lord was wiling to concede the victory to his Duchess. It is a sentiment and gesture I understand well, but one, perhaps, for a less trivial occasion...maybe. I do not know the family well....it could have been a bonding thing I walked in on.

Despite all my previous successes at the Queen of Games and how I had arguably played better than I ever have done in my life, the General demonstrated that even if you do everything right...It may not be enough.

Relationship Note on Calypso
An evening of sharing and caring between friends was something I think we both needed. For hours we had long talks about personal losses, gave a few sympathetic hugs, spoke of mutual hopes and plans for the for the future, "Momma' tales of our children, pleasant music and shared burdens and worries. The wine, and refreshments were nice, too. It was something we both had missed, am glad we are friends.

I don't mind confessing to the world that I really want one of those tactical battle tables of Duchess Calypso's with the representational scale and elevation of Arvum now that I've finally had the pleasure to properly experience the Malvici Hall War Room in all its glory.

I wish I could claim credit for some change in Talen, but the truth is that the man and leader he is becoming has been there for as long as I can remember, just hidden beneath layers of immaturity, frustration, and bullshit. Once those things are cleared away, the 'diamond in the rough' is revealed.
You are absolutely correct about one thing: I could not have chosen a better partner to rule at my side. I know there are those who had doubts because of his bloodline, his reputation, or even -my- reputation, but I point to his current success as the evidence that the faith I had in him was well placed.
I couldn't have done any of this without him.

Relationship Note on Calypso
It feels as though so much has occurred since last I wrote. Do other people sometimes have that feeling? That so much has occurred that you do not even know where to begin? To combat that, I have decided to pick a focal point. That focal point? The Ministry of Defense.
It was a great honor to accept my promotion within the Ministry of Defense to Commander a short time ago. I feel as though I have grown significantly as a leader since coming to Arx, and I look forward to growing more.
Which brings me to the next point that humbles me so. I have accepted General Calypso Malvici's gracious offer of patronage. Through clasped hands, I hope to be a pupil that makes her proud. Someone that strengthens the Compact. A student that inspires those around me to continue to learn and become better people, no matter their current place.

While the city is in an uproar over some rogue bookworm, I want to praise my liege, Duchess Calypso Malvici. She is a gifted tactician and still she deigns to seek out my opinion. I am so humbled by her example. Together we decided not to make out but I still think it was a good meeting.

I've watched you, from that first time we met during a meeting of military minds. And I have never seen you treat any of your troops with less then dignity and respect and the knowledge that they are people with lives and souls outside of war. It is a trait I wanted to make sure I fostered in myself, be it by fighting alongside them, checking up on their recovery from injuries, sending letters of condolence, making sure their families are cared for, or making sure I never ask them to do anything that I wouldn't also do.
But after the siege, with so many losses, I felt like I needed to do more. So I spent a lot of time with those recovering from injuries, and I listened to the stories of their fallen comrades. With Sir Rhys there with me, we wrote every story down. By the time we were done, we had two bound books worth of names and personalities and stories of both the living and the dead. I keep a copy of those books at the manor. And there are copies kept elesewhere; at Sanctum, and with Scholars. They are on my desk, right now, as a reminder while we call the banners once again and plan the battle as best we're able.
That's how I make sure I never forget, and hopefully nor will those who lead after me.

I did not see the play, but any art that can make you reflect upon yourself is a powerful thing.
I would take issue with your claim that you are not an artist however. You are a leader of warriors a master of the blade, of strategy, of tactics. You exemplify the Martial Arts that Gloria inspires us to achieve and why she sits amongst the Triad of the Arts alongside Vellichor and Jaynus. Never tell yourself different.

Relationship Note on Calypso
I have ever admired my cousin. She is an incredible leader on the battlefield and no less off the battlefield. She is ever working to bolster trade and strengthen the economy of Southport. I have no fears for my homeland in the wake of this theft. All they have done is offered my cousin something to hone her talents on and keep them sharp. This thief as erred greatly, and my cousin will use this offer of support as deftly as she wields soldiers on a field to the success and strength of our home.
