Relationship Note on Caith

Cousin Caith -- who, or what is, exactly -- a Stumphrey?

Dear Mom,

Hopefully the letters that I have been sending are making it back to Leaholdt safely, and I hope that you - and father - and especially Cady are doing well. I look forward to showing Arcadia all of the places that I have discovered in the city so far. She might even like some of them too. Like the Charter Hall of the Society of Explorers. That's where I met my patron Pathfinder Lou (or just Lou) for the first time. She would probably make a very good Explorers. But, you know, I wouldn't want to worry you. I'm not one. (YET. I will be.)

You know, it was a very busy week. I met several more important people that spoke to me and the conversation was pleasant. I attended a couple of parties that were almost pleasant. I am working on a design (and treatment) of a few bolts of umbra fabric that I will eventually have made into a dress for higher-end occasions, such as balls, although I hope that I am not expected to wear slippers - I do prefer my boots for safety purposes. Although you were worried that the steel cap would curl in and cut off my toes if I dropped my jeweler's anvil on my foot -- and I showed you that that was a falsehood -- do you remember? It made the best ringing clang.

(I don't think that I need to remind her about the further testing I did.)

OH! Before I forget, Mom, if you could send me the taxidermy and clockwork sparrow that I made? -- Yes, that one. Yes, the one that made you faint. I think I still have the key with me, and I think I can fix it so that it can move a little more smoothly. I am still sorry about the head, Mom. But you also helped me test out my new alchemical smelling salts, so it wasn't all bad, was it? All for science.

I'll write again soon.

Always,

Elly

Relationship Note on Driskell

You don't need to see someone in order to listen to what they're saying. It just means that you need to pay closer attention to what's not being said in addition to what's being said. That doesn't make sense now that I'm reading it, but that what was in my head --

Cousin Fairen and Tomwell were in the Salon when I returned from the party -- ball -- thing that I briefly attended at the Arena. Yes, the pearl was real. I am going to be testing and documenting how long a pearl may dissolve in vinegar. Next, what kind of alchemical formula I can create to either treat the pearl (or, ideally, the oysters) to create a stronger gemstone.

And we talked and talked and it was nice. So very nice.

It's so much easier to talk to family, Journal.

Relationship Note on Lou

Today marks the day that Princess (the word has been heavily crossed out --) Just Lou became my patron. I promised to be the best research assistant ever until I can learn enough from her to become an Explorer. I think I've got this. The rest of everyone else in the city should be a little bit nervous. But just a little bit. Tiny bit. Me-sized bit.

Relationship Note on Margret

Statistically speaking, I am only lucky about half of the time, my lady. However. I am looking to improve my personal odds. Also, probably, my medical skills. I sliced my thumb pretty good on some glass I was cutting for my optical observation instrument, and I realized that my stitches are pretty uneven. Shame on me.

Relationship Note on Mae

She told me to wear a helmet. And to avoid the clocktower. I will promise, for now, to avoid the clocktower. I think I will try and rig a device that will better allow me to study it from affair. (The word is crossed out, heavily, and corrected.) AFAR. I'll need to visit a glazier with my specific requirements. Or, I could just cut the glass myself. I certainly don't see anything going wrong with that.

Relationship Note on Cullen

He offered me a bit of excellent advice. On his say-so, I will avoid getting stabbed in the chest with a sword. IF I do, I am to immediately seek the attention of his sister, Lady Margret Greemarch for medical care. Although, I wonder how mobile someone would be IF they were run through with a sword. I suppose it would entirely depend on the depth of the wound, and where, and how it happened.

Relationship Note on Vercyn

Don't tell. But, uhm, I might have compared the Duke of Whitehold to a billy-goat gruff. Are these a matter of public rec -- Oh. They are.

Dear Mom,

I'm going to send you an edited copy of this letter, because if I detail all of the things that happened on the trip from Leaholdt, you might have me plunked onto the next carriage headed out of the city. Suffice to say: it's totally not my fault that I attempted to make the ride smoother by attempting to improve the spring suspension system of the undercarriage. A semi-elliptical leaf spring just seems so outdated. I thought maybe if we took some of that lighter, better steel -- like Oathlands steel, we could --

(oh, sorry, Scholar. You can't keep up with me. Well, cut out this part.)

-- so, see, I cannot be blamed for the entire party (with those hired guards) winding up in the ditch. Thankfully, I did manage to make a rather on the spot poultice of cold mud and mixed herbs to bring down the inflammation on the driver's head. Yes, it did take some convincing to try and get him to trust me with slapping mud (I think - I swear it was mud) on his bald spot. Poor sir. I'll need to write him a smart apology letter following this entry.

Suffice to say that Tomwell saw me well settled into my new room (oak - a greatly dense hardwood) and it's perfectly lovely. A clean slate to build my workshop in. I already have ideas and sketches drawn up on how the maximize the layout to create an efficient laboratory-slash-working space. Like I promised, I DID join the Scholars of Vellichor. I am ALSO a member of the Apothecary College. AND another thing that I am apprentice of but I don't think I look very good in scarlet. Would hair ribbons be all right?

(Scholar? You look a little pale. Is your hand cramping?! I'm sorry.)

I need to stop now. I'll write soon.

Always,

Elly.
