Relationship Note on Magpie

Why is hope gray? I used to wear the color more. Your light dove gray, no adornment. Or charcoal.

I like sneaking a little brighter stuff nowadays. It's like my way of cheating my own expectations, with other folks' help. Brighthope for everyone! Bright as the glitter of sunlight on seasurf. While it glitters bright. While it can glitter bright. Why not embrace every dawn we're given.

[a painting]

Arrayed in a capering, bounding, wrassling line are puppies, the kind of lean, raggedy-tailed, raggedy-eared, disreputable and faintly wolfish puppies of no known provenance.

The puppy farthest left is a deep violet, the pup next a rampaging indigo. Next, a pastel sky-blue, its eyes glittering dark. Next! The mottled green of a forest-floor in dappled sunlight, snapping at the tail of weathered desert-sand yellow. Yellow in turn play-bows toward the near-bronze burnish of orange, chasing the ruddy russet of Red.

In small letters near the bottom, "As promised."

Relationship Note on Carita

Ah! I could not give you an alternative without knowing how Darkwater wants to present itself! The old motto is brutal, warlike without care for the lives of opponents or, hm, human obstacles. If this is still true, then mercy is indeed not a virtue the house recognizes. If it is not true, what is true?

I know house mottos are house mottos (the Grayhope motto is not a great ice breaker), but mercy and daring are both virtues. Both of them!

Otherwise, interested to see more elevation in the Inquisition, and interested in the phrasing of Lady Carita's proclamation. If it is truly ideals that make one a peer, this continues to raise interesting questions about birth rank.

Well, if Skald decides to get really excited about maintaining class barriers, I got no way of stopping him.

I have an ongoing discussion with certain of my friends. About whether our place at birth reflects an order sacred to those of the Tetrad of Concepts particularly (barring Skald - this is not something I imagine Skald cares much about), and, further, about how one's place may change while still holding certain concepts sacred.

I am therefore always fascinated when a place changes.

Relationship Note on Zhayla

Wanna talk about stories.

Lots of folk I know, love, even, but don't know well enough. Distant sort of fellow, me, knew Zhayla as a wild, brave heart who burned with love and ferocity, who would've given her life for a stranger or a friend, who would fly fast to the aid and hope of anyone with a little light in them.

I liked her very much, and she is gone, but not gone. The Wheel waits. But also, the story.

Tendency, once you know you're in danger, or might be in danger, to hole up, to crawl into the dark so the dark might not see you. But Zhayla didn't have the least doubt in her heart of what she wanted. Sword and hero, at once defiant and open-hearted. She made her story.

I wish it might've been longer. You always want the last battle to be--

I wish I knew how to--

Relationship Note on Bastien

Clay is rather soft as prisons go, it also bears mentioning. Would be relatively easy for the romantic prisoner to punch his way out and throttle the artist. Should the fatal perfection impulse ever strike. I only want everyone to remember they have options. You have nothing to fear from me!

To seek perfection is to seek a kind of stasis, a point where growth ends forever, a point where one can rest, satisfied.

No such point exists. We are mortal and restless, we are mortal and hungry. One may as well embrace the turmoil.

Relationship Note on Bastien

I only want to state, for the record. I only want to state, as an artist for artists.

I am often unsatisfied with portraits. I dislike portraiture in general as staid and driven by vanities.

I do, however, promise I will never encase anyone, my love or otherwise, in clay. That would violate every artistic ethic I have. And I do have them!

Sketches.

A blotch, like flung tar, lit with fire. Two claws. A skull with its sockets emitting bright spiders. A man in a ragged hat leaning against an upturned cart, weeping. A great pale ship crests on a wave of snow and ash. The wards in miniature beneath a glassy dome. The first hint of dawn across the cathedral roof.

A sketch.

The great statue of Mangata, done entirely in grays and whites. The darkest gray represents the stain on the base, a damp blotch. But this darkness is nearly overwhelmed by the luminescence of the rest of the piece. The lines of detail, robe and face, hair and feathered cloak, are rendered in the faintest visible lines, as if the sculpture were made of light.

Ah, emerging after a painting retreat.

I never get anything done. This should surprise no one. It's studies and discarded sketches, dragons and foxes, trees and fires, banal, really.

The purpose is to clean the canvas. Metaphorically speaking. Blanken the mind. Enough to come out refreshed.

Enough to come out missing everything and everyone that you take for granted.

No, need more practice at good outs.

Difference between a serf and a thrall is a serf has an out. Every citizen of the Compact has an out. Not always a great option, going crownsworn, but it’s an escape hatch when you need one.

I really don’t know the numbers of thralls freed by the Liberators, what channels they went through. Maybe there’s logistical issues here.

But past logistics, my one question would be. Payment of a thrall’s debt is their out. If that’s not acceptable, then what is? Lot of small folk have shitty lives, but the out keeps them from being slaves.

Relationship Note on Laric

My actual patron. If friend, too. Not the only one who can tell you that the Master of Questions has a none-too-subtle sense of humor. He is, fortunately, amused by stupid sketches and long-missed and still-missed deadlines. Not that I plan to do anything too shady where he can see. Not that I ever do anything shady. Is he reading this? How many more provisions should I drop here.

Relationship Note on Leona

Ah, Leona. Rare sort of person to come from power, and burn for the welfare of the smallfolk with nearly the fervor she has for her sworn charge. Without a hint of magnanimity, either (ask me how I feel about magnanimity, ask me!). But let me not speak of Leona more like a patron than as a surprising friend. Been wonderful to talk frankly and widely with someone so thoughtful and direct.
