Arx is still incalculably huge, more people than I had seen in my entire life when I was growing up visible down each thronging street. So many of these people are rich, but so many also have flocked to that dream of wealth and ease in the capital only to find themselves sorely disappointed. Bread does not improve their situation but it does at least give them time. Mapping the city on the other hand prevents me from getting lost, or at least I hope so. The capital sprawls out from the central ward:

It is important that I do my best not to represent the Faith, not to mention the Crown, positively. Confusing as it might be this does involve learning how the nobility expect to be addressed, degrees of curtsey, the various elaborate tools they use to help establish and maintain their dignity. Writing it down seems to work well to settle things in my mind:

Relationship Note on Barric

He seems an honest, hard working young man genuinely motivated by trying to do the good thing. A credit to his family.

Relationship Note on Gareth

A man who has suffered a great deal and makes a great show of well justified bitterness. He strikes me as far more honest to himself than most though, with a genuine love of his house and wish to do them proud.

Seeing Alacarite in action for the first time was a shock, while I have found myself officiating over Rites of Gloria not infrequently since taking up my new position, I have not seen one conclusively resolved in so little time before outside of when shrinking couriers tentatively tap each other to first blood.

Sadly the combatants were rather perfunctory when it came to honouring the gods but I cannot deny they fought well.

It is encouraging to see that, even in these dark times, the gods are still honoured, Prince Edain and Lord Victus fought bravely, with sincere determination and skill when they tested each other before Gloria. I do feel that Lord Victus' appreciation of the gods is perfunctory, but can only hope that he turns his undeniable strength against the enemies of the Pantheon and the faith when the time comes.

Those who rode with the king are obviously beyond help, but what has happened to His Majesty? This is no natural state for anyone to be in. I can only pray for his recovery. No doubt many will view this as an opportunity instead of seeing that something is seeking to sew maximum disunity and chaos, while I can hope that people follow their better natures, no doubt many high lords and ladies will be doing the work of Tehom before long as they scrabble for advantage.

Isolde decided to try to persuade me that there is truth to what she has been taught about the Thirteenth, she is obviously an intelligent young woman but her words still ring false. She tried to persuade me that incorporating Tehom into the faith would strengthen it, like allowing a metal or a tree bending in the breeze, likening my faith to something brittle... Adding termites to a strong wooden house is a better analogy. She also tried to flirt with me, which was unexpected.

Arx is incomprehensively vast, even just the Ward of the Compact a mess of throughfairs, boulevards, ways and numerous other strange terms for streets. I have done my way to map the core of the city at least, which will hopefully prevent me from wandering lost:

Conducting myself amongst the highest of nobility is difficult, their viewpoints alien, their perspectives coming across as squewed and priorities strange indeed. What is expected of me? This is my new battlefield however and though I am ill equipped for it I must do my best and let my heart guide me in my actions.

There is only one path and that is the path of Truth, do the right thing because it is right. The purpose of life is to be amongst those who renew the world, to make the world progress toward perfection.

How best to guide the world toward perfection? A whim of some high lord or lady can change the lives of thousands yet they do not know the fundamental truth, that for most of their subjects, the greatest goal they can aspire to is that their family will never know hunger.

Relationship Note on Preston

It is reassuring to find in someone so young, a passion burning bright to do the work of the gods and shine for Gloria. I envy him seeing the field, but I wish for the gods to smile upon his works.

Relationship Note on Fawkuhl

It is hard to be with the voice of the gods and not feel overwhelming faith and piety, to know that one stands with one speaking for the divine. Despite this, he does not seem to fall prey to vanity like many powerful men do, and I can only but hope this remains true.

Relationship Note on Alaric

The king is a good man. He is not, however, a holy man. He worships with me as the palace seraph, but there is a perfunctory nature to it, and I feel he was not willing to truly listen until recently when he was most troubled. I had hoped him growing closer to the gods would aim him, but I fear it may have come too late.

Relationship Note on Isolde

It is jarring for anyone raised in the Oathlands to see those who worship the Thirteenth willingly, who place themselves on the path of darkness and still claim to be good and godly women. Princess Isolde Velenosa is one such example, and the woman makes no apologies for it. Despite a bone deep revulsion for the Thirteenth, I cannot fully fault the charming woman. She has the courage of her convictions, and even if she is on the wrong path, she seems to come by them honestly.
