Relationship Note on Bhandn

Sir Bhandn, Little did I know that we had met long before Lady Delilah's pie fight. It took a while after father asked if I remember you for me to call to mind the first time that we met. You and Mercy Valena defended us well on that trip. I like to think Kaldur and I helped make your time on the road just some small bit more interesting. Also, sir Bhandn, I will never think of bucks the same way again.

Scholars it was some time ago, in the years of the Tyde Rebellion. I can't remember which year it was. My family was traveling to Arx. My father would remember more details on what concerned the adults. At the time I was concerned with digging up riverhorse eggs with my brother. This may have been the first time I met some of the Bisland kids, or maybe just one of the first encounters that linger in my memories.

Question of the ages: Tell kids that the earlier they learn to read the earlier they can find out how much trouble you got into when you were their age -- or let them figure that out by themselves?

Relationship Note on Joscelin

Guildmaster Joscelin Arterius has my admiration, but somehow I had started to take her work for granted. When I saw how people reacted to her work with the Seleki jewelry, I realized once again how amazing she is. She is a credit to our house and to the people of Pearlspire. Her work with precious metals and clear gems is amazing. I am used to seeing people wear these, I did not realize how delightful many would find our pearls set with her skill.

Self, you are an idiot sometimes. I laugh. The festival reminded me that pearls have flavours too. My brother Kaldur already knew this and encouraged me to share them at the festival.

Future scholars: This was a festival called The Taste of Grayson. Arx has many Taste festivals. I do not know how many flavours pearls can have. work on your linguistic skills because we use flavour and taste in many ways, not just for food. But pearls do have a flavor. it's definitely very strong just after you shuck them. I have not thought to taste them after they've been set....

Present scholars: If you think future scholars of food and jewelry customs would like to know how jewelry tastes, I can make a study of this. We already do have a custom of silver on desserts.

Future scholars of language: I wish you to understand proxemics and the language of our bodies. When someone puts palm to forehead it can mean many things. This scholar I just asked did so. My Pearl's Own also does this at times. The other day I did this to myself. Study the people around you so that you can improve your lexicon.

Vellichor, I am grateful that you inspire us to share our lives in the small and well as the large. My mother died in the summer, and as it passes I remember her passing. She lives in my journals and in the journals she kept. This summer has been difficult. You've given me comfort.

Relationship Note on Michael

Thanks for showing off Joscelin's divine skill as a crafter. That tiara with our pearls make up for your your new hairstyle.

I found it very intriguing to receive a message from Sir Struttington when I stood right next to you. Perhaps Sir Struttington could also use a tiara to good effect.

Future scholars: It is the custom of people here in Arx to preen and show their plumage to good effect. Surely this is still a custom in your time, but one never knows.

I should really pop out some kids given all the chaos going on right now.

Not only is it sensible, I like kids and I know father will appreciate the day that he has toddlers crawling all over and getting into things. I see him visiting our neighbors who have children and coming back with a brighter look on his face. I would like to see that last longer. I am very happy to hear of the birth of a new Riven. I hope I meet her soon.

I have been pondering the oaths that nobles take when they marry. When it is my turn, will I go with a traditional oath? I shall talk with a priest of Limerance to understand more about this. I want to know if the traditions cover what I aspire to and what I expect from a partnership.

Relationship Note on Michael

Lord Michael Bisland has earned his fame. I recommend sparring with the Sword of Pridehall. but be sure he remembers to equip his wit.

But in all seriousness, He is the best teacher. One day I will have fewer scrapes and bruises after only one exchange in the practice ring.

Vellichor, Future Scholars,

Sometimes people drink too much and then think that childhood fancies are of historical import. It is a think that happens. There is a book on drinks of Arvum here, should you wish to know our customs.

I don't know how to ride horses, but maybe one day I'll find sea horses. I think it much safer to fall off a sea horse than a land horse.

There are so many duties, but I love the work I've been doing for my house and the academy.

Will I find a priest of Mangata to bless the construction in Pearlspire? I hope she loves the new spume of new waves, and hope she will play in the eddies that swirl around us as we work.

I regret being so busy that I was unable to attend the art appreciation gathering. While no great artist myself, I enjoy looking at the art of others.

I once tried to sketch the Valardin Cairn, and I ended up with what looked like a walking warty tree.

Vellichor, I hope this amuses you too,
Lady Peri

I am thinking how to offer challenge to compare the conditions of Pearlspire's serfs against the conditions of the thralls of other lands.. For we see how poorly thralls have been treated once they survive to reach us. We do not work our pearldivers such long hours that they die of lung ailments. Our divers do not lose their sight from long hours of diving. We do not see so many scars or shriveled limbs from shark attacks. Nor scars from chains.

This is because we honor our pearldivers and they honor us. We grant them protection and they grant us the bounty of the sea. We do not demand unreasonable quotas of pearls and then put our divers in debt when they cannot work long enough to offer up all the pearls we imagine they owe.

While many waters have pearls, it is Pearlspire that is known best for hers.

Relationship Note on Sparte

That tension of the cloth. Sparte, now you have me imagine the surface of water. The surface of water is my cloth. My balance is on a bobbing vessel. The waters roil from life above and below. stirrings of gods and monsters.

Relationship Note on Eddard

Well, my blacks are all dour and serious, so here's a white for Vellichor and future scholars wondering about life here in Arx. It is less serious.

In Arx we have all manner of couriers, even trained pets.[1] Soot is my ferret, newly trained to convey messages. Lord Jyri has trained him well, and now it is my turn. I have walked with Soot all over the city and have meet many a curious person this way. Soot is very social! very curious.

Soot introduced me to a person who recently moved here! Arx is great. This Lord enjoys Arx especially because he can now spend time excelling in music and stories and scholarship. He received no support for that where he grew up.

We met him on the way to the Cairn Valardin. Soot was to guide me there and then run around it and come back to my side. It turns out to find this Ciarn[1] one must first find a bard. Good job, Soot!

Well met, Lord Eddard. I hope to see you again some day. I enjoyed my practice with Soot, and enjoyed telling you tails of the Cairn and discussing the Metallic Song cycle[2] with you. I was not in Arx to see all of the performances, I regret that.

With all due respect to Vellichor and Future Scholars too,
Peri

[0] Pets are animals like ferrets, cats, birds, and the such. We do not keep humans as pets, though we do hire them to carry messages. In the past we have kept humans as slaves but that practice is not approved of by the majority of the Compact.

[1] Cairn Valardin is a large pile of stones with a sepulcher with the the Dragon of Valardin symbol engraved in it. Many stories are told of who is buried there.

[2] The Metallic Song cycle was written by Princess Sorrel Thrax concerning the heroics of the Metallic order. Look to Gold's Song.

I would like to meet people who have experienced exile. I want to learn more the experiences of exiled. I do not know how likely it is I would meet someone who is currently exiled, but perhaps someone who has returned from exile would be willing to speak with me. I would maintain confidentiality.

I do not know if anyone would want to disclose their experiences publicly in the whites. Perhaps some scholar could record an anonymous account of exile if no one is willing to speak it on it with another.

I ask this because one day I may be responsible for carrying out justice for my house. I want to know the consequences of my choices.

When I am in the archives for a long time, I have to get up and walk around. I can't stand holding so still for so long. Yesterday I wandered past the poetry shelf and found a book so compelling that I couldn't budge myself until I had read the whole thing. The book is filed under Eurisi Poetry in the Scholars' archives. It is called "Allanruar Arirh, The Soul of a River". The poems are by Muhah Saaec a silk merchant who traveled the world and who sent letters faithfully to his love Gaston Jejun, Baron of Glaintin. I cried at the end. I will not say why into the whites because I do not want to spoil the story.

My research yesterday was lackluster and fruitless. I didn't find what I was looking for. I almost wasted a an entire day. I am so grateful to Brother Branan, whoever you are, for translating this.

Relationship Note on Teagan

Teagan, You ask how one would trust someone who speaks support of something in public and then turns around to support the opposing side.

My answer depends on the person who is doing this. I consider their age and their breadth and depth of knowledge. If the person is just learning about a topic, perhaps they have not considered all of the aspects of it. As they engage with others, they will learn of more perspectives that they have not considered.

I consider myself. I don't have as much as experience as most in sussing out big ideas. When I try to understand things I feel like I have whiplash sometime. For example, with this issue of thralldom: why did I never think about what it means to be executed instead of put in thralldom? The other day the high inquisitor brought this to our attention in the whites. I have not changed my position, and I'm not sure I will, but now I have this to mull over. Maybe one day I will support an opposing view in public, though today is not that day. At my core being, I do not want others to suffer in thralldom. What does that mean? Now I am faced with many questions. Another: what does it mean to exile a person versus execute them directly?

I hope to always remain trustworthy.

Hello Future Scholars,

I do not know if you are out there, but if you are: Hi! I am Lady Peri, the heir of House Seliki.

I don't know what you will be curious about. Lately I am reading backwards through many journals. Sometimes I want to bellow at the writers: Why do you not use full names! Where are the titles! Lord So-and-So? Lord So-and-So who? There are three Lady So-and-So's! Who are you talking about? The High Inquisitor or the Guildemaster? Why did you stop talking about that ship? Did they already finish building it? How long did it take! I know the necklace is very pretty, but what about that ship!

Future Scholars, I am very sorry for not listing all of the full names as well as the details for what you want to know about our time.

Today's date is 7/8/1010 AR. Current time: 6:23. Does that even make sense to you?

Apologies,
Lady Peri

Relationship Note on Brass

House Seliki has experience in settling thralls who reach our shores and will not be found unprepared for whatever decisions the Compact makes. We will share our knowledge with other Houses. Learn from us.

But what of Brass? I would like to know what experience he has with this and what we can learn from him. Have anyone of you discovered what specific plans he has for handling the freeing of slaves? I am confused by contradictory claims. I also hear that he has demands for how serfs shall be treated. Has he written histories for us to consult? I would like to read these in order to gain the knowledge for House Seliki.

Andry,

I do not understand why obtaining agreements to free slaves would count as breaking the rule of law. If the agreements are lawful contracts, then where is the breakdown in law?
