Relationship Note on Orazio

Legate Orazio, the Heart of Solace and Shield of the Faith,

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for sending the Knights of Solace to Stormwall to keep our passes free, so that none of our warriors would be trapped within the city. Redrain would have lost more people at the Battle of Stormwall, if these passes had become overrun with the enemy. Dame Thena Grayhope proved her mettle on the battlefield and in the command tent by providing keen strategy and compassionate service to all that were in need of Solace. Combined with the timely efforts of Sir Daemon Dracone and Sir Jeffeth Bayweather many of the fallen were protected and taken to the Mercies for healing.

All three of these Knights should be recognized for their Faithful efforts and dedication to their duty. They protected their charges to the Last!

Princess Marian Redrain

Relationship Note on Orazio

The Legate of Concepts and I do not always see eye-to-eye on the places where the Faith and governing intersect. (I would not claim to be even conversant with him on matters of Faith alone.)

But we always have a frank exchange of views, he and I, and I come away stronger and more thoughtful for having spoken with him. We should all be so fortunate to have an interlocutor as sharp and as patient as Father Orazio in our lives.

Relationship Note on Orazio

Not only did I have both the pleasure and honor of meeting Legate Orazio today over a lovely breakfast, but I had one of the most wonderful, insightful conversations. There is a decided sense of authority when speaking with him, an educated man who seems to have seen and learned much in this word. The things one might glean from his experiences? I can only imagine. He is also affable, allowing and answering my many questions quite sincerely. I am sure there are matters we might not agree on, but I greatly appreciate his willingness to speak candidly and very much look forward to speaking with him again. I feel like I could learn so much.

Relationship Note on Orazio

I'd forgotten how much I like Orazio, it had been such a long time since we were last in one another's lives.

I remember now however. In fact I think I like him even more than I did then. I'm just as vain as ever I was, but can focus on things beyond my own beauty, such as extremely amusing conversational partners such as he.

I would teach even though who wish to join The Faith as well, of course. Smithing as well as pugilism, should you have any interested. How fortunate they are, as are we all, for all the good provided by The Faith. If I might be able to help somehow, in any small way, how could I possibly turn down such an opportunity?

I won't be leaving, I'll be staying in the city.

But I could still fall down! There's a lot of stairs in Arx.

I greatly appreciate your friendship and commitment to helping see my final wishes fulfilled.

But man, does Father Orazio get paid by the word or something?

I must thank you, Father Orazio, for your missive on the matter that caught my attention in the onslaught of white journals. I am quite relieved to hear that I had obviously misunderstood your statement; what was a comment on doctrine and standards of behavior, but which appeared to be related to what I have obviously misinterpreted as an over-arching discussion on unity between the faithful and prodigal houses which practices shamanism.

You have my most sincere and public apologies of course.

Forgive me, Father Orazio, but I feel I must ask based on your comments about human sacrifice...

Which Prodigal Houses do you have proof of supporting such abomination? The Oathlands still strictly forbids both blood magic and human sacrifice so I would see that matter dealt with immediately.

Relationship Note on Orazio

You are correct, it's not one god's purview to see to it that everything is all peace and harmony all the time. Actually, I think it is Lagoma that causes change, and change is sometimes met with resistance. When resistance turns to war, we have Gloria that guides us. Yes, we have gods of conflict. Yes, we have gods of war. Ideal concepts...

But, I think it speaks to itself that we do not have gods or spirits promoting conflicting doctrines or wars against other gods. I wonder why that is? I wonder if it is because they realize that working together they can accomplish more? Maybe because they realize they are on the same team - that is, our team?

If the spirits, or worship of spirits affronted the gods why did they give us Skald and the choice? If they were so possessive over who gets our worship why not fight wars against each other to further their own doctrine instead of the whole of the Thirteen? I'm just curious as to, if they do not represent unity, why do they display it so much?

Relationship Note on Orazio

I don't think I can help you with this one, because I don't understand how the Paths here work. I don't know how they worship, and I don't really understand your worship yet. I don't know or understand the spirits here either (not that I was ever that good with the ones where I'm from, but I had someone to explain them to me there). Where I come from, worship, at least from what I've gathered since coming to the Compact, isn't the right word to use. This is probably something that's better for a conversation than a journal entry, but, shorter, where I'm from, the word to use isn't worship, at least as I understand that word.

The word to use is honor, or maybe respect. There's no prayer, there is meditation and trance. Bargains are made because spirits have desires and needs, but also because, at least where I'm from, this is a tradition, how we show respect. Everyone has needs. I don't know what word to use in Arvani for it, but when you get something, you give something. That's how it is, and it goes for neighbors as well as spirits. Maybe, if I want something from a stone, the stone doesn't actually need what I'm sacrificing to get that something, but I give it anyway, because it shows I respect the spirit enough, and what the spirit is giving enough, that I'm willing to give in return. And the greater the thing I ask for, the greater the thing I sacrifice, because it shows I understand and value what I'm asking for.

Of course, people start getting antsy whenever you start talking about this kind of thing and using the word 'sacrifice'. That's not what this is. Just think of it as a price. You pay a price, like you do with any bargain you make. Maybe that's a task in return. Maybe that's some food. Maybe it's an item you treasure. Maybe you make something. Maybe you destroy something. Maybe you protect the spirit's home. Maybe you build them a home. It's not the way gods work because spirits aren't gods. They're old things with their own ways and wisdoms.

If you're trying to compare the two, I can see the problem. That keeps tripping me up too.

Relationship Note on Orazio

I can't speak to the politics between the Faith and the Peerage. I also can't really speak to the way that Arx shamans might deal with the spirits; we've talked about this, I'm pretty ignorant on it. Perhaps it's the exact same way the gods are worshiped here.

That said, I should point out that, in your example, behaving that way only works until you piss off the spirit of the rock formation by ignoring what the spirit actually wants and asks for. Maybe the nobles you're talking about don't realize it either, but if a spirit wants to act, and it can act, it will act. It's not the power of a god, but that doesn't really matter too much when the spirit you've annoyed happens to be a living hill intent on crushing you (something that happened to us last year when the Grayson forces were in the Gray Forest until Khanne realized what we were dealing with and was able to communicate with it). People thinking about how shamanism is easier might want to consider that spirits are neither obligated to be friendly nor required to be helpful nor necessarily understandable to humanity at all. A rock is a rock, after all. If you form a relationship with it, you'd best hold up your end.

I've seen spirits. I've had a drink with a god. This world's too weird a place to ignore either.

With the kind support of Father Orazio and the Faith, the new armour is complete. It about emptied my bank account, and took more coin than I feel comfortable with, but hopefully it should ensure some greater longevity for guarding the Dominus in case the enemy should come to Arx. It is also the first non-standard Templar armour I have owned, which should help others find me on the field. Which I suppose they must do now.

I have not met the gentlemen in question, but if it would be momentous enough to draw a crowd, I'm sure the cost of admissions could be donated to the charities of their choices to benefit the Compact and its people.

That said, let us all hope that the terms of said will do not have to be carried out for a good while yet.
