Relationship Note on Calypso

Lady Calypso Malvici is a skilled and competent general from the Lyceum. Skilled in leading troops and also skilled with a blade herself, I've sparred with her on a few occasions and it has been a delight. She's been recently appointed the Minister of Defense and so I look forward to seeing what she can do for the Compact.

Relationship Note on Calypso

We might not agree on the function of Order in an Army, but we can both agree that throwing away lives is the sign of a bad General.

This, along with our previous military-centric meeting, has earned this woman the beginnings of my respect.

Relationship Note on Calypso

A woman with a fine head on her shoulders. A fine tactician, an interesting (if sometimes blunt) conversationalist, and, far more importantly? She has the makings of a fine Minister of Defense. She is decisive when she needs to be, listens to other's advice when the time for discussion is here, and does not waste time on idle pleasantries when there is work to be done. I look forward to working more with her in the future.

The Lady General is a noteworthy warrior. The safety of His Majesty's realm seems to be one of her many priorities; that is good. I look forward to another opportunity for both of us to test ourselves in the peace and quiet of hitting one another.

Relationship Note on Calypso

The Lady Calypso said that regardless of any politics going on we still have a job to do. At the time she was discussing how to kill the bringers. She makes a good point.

Relationship Note on Calypso

The Lady General have proven herself a stalwart commander in the field, and one willing to see to the interest of the Crown and the Compact before others. A desireable trait which puts her above many others in my esteem.

The Battle of Whitewood was a trial by fire, in my eyes, which she passed galantly and in the future I will trust her with my men should it come to it.

Relationship Note on Calypso

There is a reason I am the Redrawn they don't think twice about when vanishing into the snows and wilds - I was never made for courtly graces. That, and things go a touch more smoothly when I am not around.

I have your back even if you do not see me. Call it a trick of my trade?

You are always welcome, whiskey or not. There are a dwindling few I still trust and I am glad to have you among them.

I'm sorry, my friend. These were not things I wished to tell you, but they were things you deserved to hear.

And now you know. I hope in time, that you will forgive me for telling them to you. And that you will eventually understand why I said what I did.

It is a burden, but it is a burden I believed you are more than capable of carrying. That is how deep my respect goes for your talents.

We will need leaders in the coming days, in the future. And a General cannot lead without the weapon of knowledge at her fingers.

That all said, forgive me what I have placed upon you.

Relationship Note on Calypso

Now we're tied for the all-time dueling record. I'm impressed at the amount of time she's put into her swordsmanship while still balancing the responsibilities of command. Every time we meet in the ring, it's a contest of endurance, as we seem to be very evenly matched in skill.

If I'm forced to practice swordsmanship, playing about with the Lady General seems about the most pleasant way to do it. She's direct, and all about business.

Relationship Note on Calypso

I find myself becoming good friends with General, even if it seems like she takes personal lengths to keep most people at arm's reach. Which is fine, everyone has their personal space, but while we may not have a great deal in common, what is the idea of learning as much as we can, when can.

I owe her a talk at some point regarding some particular stories. I feel she has earned that much from me.

That will be a long talk. I hope will be prepared to hear what I have to say.

Relationship Note on Calypso

Lady General Calypso impressed me even before Lady Dawn was made Regent with her dedication to military matters. After Lady Dawn's appointment, the formation of her council, and my appointment as Minister of Defense, I've found her one of the most reliable in terms of her proactiveness and communication. If there is something that needs to be done, she does it. That's a rare virtue.

The Lady General has procured armor for me. It fits well, and while I'm not used to walking the streets in leather pants, the armor draws a lot of admiring glances. It's expensive, and well tailored, and I might spend a little on tightening or replacing this or that, but overall, I adore it.

Now to learn to use a spear with it.

Relationship Note on Calypso

I really should've made a better effort to meet with the Lady General far earlier than I managed. She is a brilliant woman with a good, reasonable head upon her shoulders. Hearty sort, too, that I think would do well in the North in the dead of winter if she ever had a reason to go up there.

I'm glad to know her.

Relationship Note on Calypso

There is something about that first snow to hit the mountains in winter.

I've spoken with a lot of people who hate the winter and hate the snow, they're cold and miserable and dream of summer. I always dream of winter. It's hard to understand in the south I imagine, but when the snow chokes the passes and everything stills there is peace, at least for a little bit. No one starts a campaign in the northern winter.

That fresh snow, unbroken by man or beast, covering the mountaintops and the land below it, there is a stillness to it. I can look at it for hours, but its true beauty comes out at night. A clear night, the moon and stars in the sky with their light bouncing off the snow. It colors everything in a blue glow, and it feels like the whole world is visible in a way you had never considered before. It's the same thing you've seen every day before then, but somehow it's different. Like you're seeing something from another world or that you're looking through life through a painting. Time and time again I come back to those moonlit nights in Farhaven, just staring from the walls off into the distance. Nothing has ever captured it before, no piece of art, no secluded grove, no mountain or cliff has ever quite captured that sense of beauty and peace you can see in the mountain snow.

I'll be damned if that's not what I see in her eyes though.

They're haunting because they capture me so completely. I just stare at them and lose track of what I was thinking about. I don't know what to do about it sometimes, but I know I keep wanting to see that hidden warmth in those snow colored eyes.

Took a beating from the Lady General. She is quick on her feet and I could not land a single hit but the advice she offered was getting better gear and complimented my ability to take a sword through the gut. She suggested I speak to Prince Anze from Redrain house.

Relationship Note on Calypso

Lady Calypso is quickly becoming someone I feel I can depend on. I've tested her arm in a spar myself, and she's quite capable, showing a determination that very few are able to stick to.

It's that indomitable spirit that I feel will carry her, even when things seem the most bleak. I look forward to getting to know her better.

Relationship Note on Calypso

There is no comfort in considering why this woman has spared my life.

When I saw it was the hall of the Black Hawk to which the silent guards hauled me, I made serious calculations about my chance of escaping from their custody. Four armed men and me bruised and beaten, I might have dispatched one, maybe a second by way of surprise but didn't like my chances after that- Malvici armsmen have no reputation as slouches. Still, I was briefly tempted to try. Dying in a street with a blade in my hand would be better than many of the fates I could imagine waited for me within those walls. Perhaps it would just be hanging, which in the end is a few short moments of scorn and choking.

I chose cowardice. I wonder if I will again, when next I come close to the threshold of death.

Anyway- Calypso. What to make of this woman? She leaves little to consider, few clefts in her disposition to begin judgement. How much of that hard exterior is truth? Every word she speaks seems measured, but against what rule? The product of hard spirit, knowledge of what it take to command men, noble indifference? I have only questions, and the deep foreboding that answers will come at cost. I rule out compassion as her motivation in the outcome of our meeting. Not that I suspect she is without it, but then why take me into the house? No, she conceives of some use for me. To put me to work as a blade? Doubtful, she has no appraisal of my competence. To sea seems more likely. In this case I have two advantages- my long experience in navigation, and my knowledge of the routes and habits of pirates. I see no edge in revealing these first, better to wait for her command.

Very focused, competent woman. Offered to teach him a bit about commanding troops and the art of war. Ansel plans to take her up on that offer sometime, when she's not giving him a workout at the Training Center.
