Relationship Note on Alaric

I did not get to spend much time with the awakened king at the boar inn... But it was a pleasant enough time with my kinsman none the same.

I'm not much for expressing emotion (unless it's righteous anger) but I am so glad you're back, old friend.

Relationship Note on Alaric

I ran into the king at the Badger last night, listening to tales of adventure from one of the Society -- his stablemaster, Tristan. He seemed very much the old king in some ways, willing to joke and laugh and be personable... but there were moments when I glimpsed something else beneath the surface. I think some of it is an act now.

In a way, that's good -- we need a king who's prepared for what's ahead.

But I also feel a bit sorry for him. It cannot be easy to suddenly have responsibility and demands for maturity land on your head... not even for a royal.

Relationship Note on Alaric

Had some time to discuss the court with the King this past week. He's not at all how like I remember him - I think his ordeal has matured him significantly.

It's a good thing to see. Arvum needs a leader.

A pleasant surprise. Thoughtful in words, friendly in action. Much different from the young man I remembered.

Relationship Note on Alaric

What is there to say? The King is as kind and generous as they have said and also very shrewd. Somehow it seems I have not been reprimanded for being in my dress armour at the improper time although the Captain was ready to write me up then and there for having done so.

I confess I should have carried it instead of worn it since I was not attending the King's duties. But it's so heavy... Next time I'll do it the right way. Every time. His Majesty deserves nothing less of me.

Relationship Note on Alaric

I have met King Alaric, the fourth of his name.

The other evening, while at the Queensrest Inn, King Alaric arrived with his guards and took up a seat at the banquet table, invite those present to join him for a drink. I found the King to be a man of magnanimous good humor and generosity. He took the time to make personal conversation with all of those present and was kind and interested in every instance, even with someone who was not very politely behaved. I liked him, though I doubt I got to know him in any true way.

It is said that the monarch is more than the person. That, on some level, they are the embodiment of the realm. The idea had never made much sense to me until this night. There was something about seeing the King out in Arx, alive and well, laughing and engaged, that lifted a damper on my heart I had not realized was there, much like the sun slipping from behind a cloud. It was as if the Compact itself were there, and that, beyond simply surviving, it was healthy and perhaps a bit stronger than it had been before.

Relationship Note on Alaric

A king who raised a commoner born in the stables to Royal Stablemaster because he was suited for the job as opposed to having the best connections. I don't know him personally, but that already speaks to me.

So the King has returned to full health? What joyous news!

Long may the King live, and may his reign prosper now that he has truly returned to us.

Relationship Note on Alaric

He has returned to us a changed man, and yet he is the same man he was when he left. His memories of the past are still there. Things only he would know. Memories. Experiences. They are there in the person of the King who now stands before me, but the man he is now is more mature. He is the King we hoped would be. The one we swore to serve, come to be the best of who he can be. Oh, I am sure he will still make mistakes and he will still be human, and I will expect no more and no less. But he has grown, and these last years of trials have given him a gravitas I only dreamed he would one day achieve. I wish that he had not suffered as he did, but I think he will be a better ruler for it. I have been privileged to serve my King these years. But I have never been prouder of him than I am today.

Relationship Note on Alaric

His Majesty and I have known each other for a long time. As Duke Bisland's foster daughter and a close friend of Dawn, my degree of separation has been minimal. Alaric used to flirt with me incessantly, and I would laugh and dismiss him. He found the game of it delightful, but I would frequently disappoint him with my insistence that I tend to my duties, perhaps because he seemed so distracted regarding his own. He may have been flippant and indulgent, but he was also kind. I'd like to think over time, he would have - no, he will - learn to become all that any could hope for.

Now he has awakened, and I wonder who he is now. I can't imagine after everything that's happened that he is anything like who he has been before. I hope he will be able to accept visitors soon, because I think he could use a familiar presence, a friendly face. Especially with Dawn having taken up her travels.

Praise be to the King, may he reign long, and may the gods long hold him and succor him and keep him.

May the Compact prosper beneath his leadership and may he rise with the support of the gods to be once again strong.

Relationship Note on Alaric

There are two kinds of animal who hibernate. Some do so seasonally no matter the circumstance, the other kind only hibernates when they need to. When a predator forces them underground and they have insufficient food to otherwise survive or other similar hardships. Is this your state cousin? Is the malady that affects you one that your enemies chose? Or one you did to escape their will?

In either case, wherever you are cousin, stay strong, take heart, we are coming for you.

Relationship Note on Alaric

Sherrod gone. Alaric left as a yam - all eyes and no consciousness. Miserable timing for all of that.

It's not that I think he's a fabulous King, I really don't; he's a damn fool, but he grows on you. Like lichen. I enjoyed all those moments we laughed at amusing stories together. I enjoyed the riding we did. The hunting. The talking. He was a fool, but he was my fool - my closest friend for quite some time, until that farce of a marriage was performed.

I had duties in Whitehold to handle, but I do wish I had been in Arx. Maybe I could have helped him somehow.

Relationship Note on Alaric

His Majesty Alaric Grayson, Fourth of His Name, King of the Compact, high lord of House Grayson and the Crownlands, Prince of Bastion, Sovereign of Arx, and ruler of Arvum is weak. That this surprises the other lords of the Compact is a testament to how worthy of contempt they truly are, as their own lands are menaced by shavs they lack the will to exterminate. The Tragedy at Sanctum occurs, the prince of Sanctum is slain, and what does our king do? He sends his condolences. I'm certain the Abandoned were dutifully impressed by his mettle.

It is to such a man that I married my beloved niece Princess Genevieve Thrax, to make a queen of her and to see a child of Thrax and Grayson blood sit upon the Elfbone Throne and rule with Thraxian strength over his entire dominion of Arvum. But even in the simple matter of getting a woman with child and protecting her, the boy was overestimated. My niece died in a 'tragic fall' in the palace, no sooner than I received word she was child, and again, I am presented with condolences. His sorrow. His profound regrets.

I have little use for condolences, even less for sorrow, and none at all for regrets. So I have come to Arx to call him to account and the boy flees the city upon my arrival. Going on a 'retreat'. How profoundly accurate. Still, he cannot be long missing from Arx, and I shall be waiting. With anticipation.

Relationship Note on Alaric

King Alaric Grayson IV is tall, handsome, and charming. Worst of all, he knows it. His reputation preceded him but that didn't necessarily stop me from wanting to know the man a little more. When he personally invited me for a tour of the Palace, I was a fresh faced maiden, recently arrived from Tor. The messengers came in a flurry and naturally I was impressed by his persistence. At first, he was everything I had heard about, including a bit daft, which saddened me because really, he's so cute, yet so dumb. The man is quite animated and passionate about his possessions. He walked me through the palace rooms, explaining to me the purpose of the room and other small facts about the decor and the history behind some of the portraits and works of art. Surprisingly, His Majesty was a consummate gentleman. He made me feel welcomed and at ease. He listened to me when he inquired about my travels and my family. And when the tables turned, he was more than willing to share things about his life with me. For what it's worth, I am truly hopeful he will overcome the tragedy that has befallen him.

Relationship Note on Alaric

The king is a good man. He is not, however, a holy man. He worships with me as the palace seraph, but there is a perfunctory nature to it, and I feel he was not willing to truly listen until recently when he was most troubled. I had hoped him growing closer to the gods would aim him, but I fear it may have come too late.

Relationship Note on Alaric

He is my king, no more and no less. At least I wished it was so. Duty and obligation are unyielding, and one cannot have their judgment impaired by other feelings, but his majesty never seems to understand that. King Alaric Grayson IV is a warm man, a kind man, that makes friends easily with a whimsy and lack of care that worries those around him. I kept my distance, even if he would have it another way.
