Everyone dies eventually! And the folks that serve under me are quite well cared for. A cavalier attitude doesn't mean I'm recklessly throwing lives away, but it does mean I'm more than happy to put myself at extreme risk to get something done. Plenty of people do that, no? The difference is that I enjoy doing it, am extremely good at it, and generally don't get my people killed in the process more than they have to. Training up new sellswords is expensive! Better to teach them to be real good at the bloody business themselves than have to replace them all the time. I really don't understand what's so hard to process about this.

Hey, if I could fight -without- killing, probably would! The killing's not the -best- part, but without that threat of it, it just isn't the same. And if you're going to do a thing, and do it well, better to take joy in it! Geez, people. You all need to drink more.

Don't ever let anyone tell you differently: there's nothing like a good fight, where it comes down to you and another person, both striving your damndest to kill each other. And that moment where you've won - where both of you know it, as a sword sinks into that soft bit between neck and collarbone to go for that strike to the heart. Where the fighters can acknowledge how bloody fun it was right before one of them dies. It's EXQUISITE.
Plus, afterwards, if you -really- enjoy it, and can lose yourself happily in it, the sleep afterwards is juuuuust the best. Bonus points if you're getting paid to do it, too!

It's been a few years now, since I got my Barony from Talen. A lot of people have asked why, and the answer largely boils down to the Seawatch Wall. Nearly everyone fell, and I stood. Covered in gore, winning the fight, and eager to get to more. It's also true that I had cleared out Afflua of monsters before the Wall happened, but the was one of those moments where... at least, as far as I'm concerned, and likely as the world will be concerned, now that we're looking at the past, history will change.
At the Seawatch Wall, Talen and I stood fast. Our battered forced held as others ran. Velenosa gained, that day, a new hound. No, I don't consider that an insult. We stood together, against the waves and waves and waves of the enemy, and so slick with gore that we could barely hold our footing, a new House was founded.
So that's our story, Compact. That is the origin of the house of De Lire. We are the dog of the Velenosa. When you fuck up so bad that subtlety is no longer an option, that's when we're there.
Our sigil is the laughing dog's head. And our words, though not chosen by me, are entirely perfect.
We aren't laughing with you.

I have often had people ask how I've done all that I've done. The answer, honestly, is a simple one. You jump in feet-first. Death is another part of life, as every sellsword knows. If you bite it, maybe you come around again, even better. If not, you get famous. Fear is for other people. Regret is for other people. Simply do as you wish, and be really good at handling consequences. It's not hard.

It's odd, sometimes, having family. Someone who I just - care about and want to see flourish. It seems like a weakness, but at the same time, it keeps me from just holing up in the estate with my swords and coming out only when there are monsters to kill.
....that said, if someone decides they want to hurt my cousin, they should also remember what happened to the last people to hurt someone I cared about. They have a new home on my wall. I have more shelves.
