And, so it begins. The next chapter of my life. I hope it's a fascinating read.

Nothing worse than a boring book.

Relationship Note on Madeleine

I've never had cause to speak to the Archlector Madeleine of Mangata before. We swim in different circles. I tend to keep my own counsel and my prayers to the gods are usually private.

All in all, I think we both enjoyed the conversation, although I suspect we were both a little surprised in the best of ways. I at finding such easy and interesting conversation in an unexpected place, and she at finding that I didn't want anything from her.

I'm sure our paths will cross again. After all, the music of water sings everywhere, and they say that all drops of rain eventually find their way to the sea.

Fair winds and calm seas indeed. Well met, Archlector.

You had my back, didn't you?

Without hesitation you stood for me. I didn't need it, but there you were ready to go without a word. Not molly coddling me. Just there. Ready. Waiting. Holding my back.

At the time I didn't see it. I do now. Thank you.

As my father used to say, "There's hindsight and then there's behindsight."

The first is when you suddenly see what you missed. Sometimes shocking and often disheartening, but you let yourself can't dwell too hard on it. You just have rise up, learn from it, fix it or mitigate the damage, and move on as best you can.

The other involves a lot talking out of your ass about what others should have seen that was likely impossible to see or know at the time -- often without fully knowing the facts or circumstances of the incident yourself.

Seems there's a lot of that going on lately.

Relationship Note on Mayir

I'll admit it. Seeing a Mayir getting his Gray Crow makes me grin like a cream-fed cat. That kind of love is a rare one. Nice to see.

Here's to calmer seas, keeping the wind in your sails and good tides in your future.

Keep it on the surface, Captain. We got a long journey ahead.

Relationship Note on Mae

I find the best policy is to love the man not the mantle.

Having said that, I try very hard not to fall in love with heroes very often. Sadly, they don't tend to live very long.

Relationship Note on Sparte

He has a serious side, but he gets jobs done without ever being too overbearing. That's an important trait, really. He didn't seem to mind my request that his armored form would be the best at taking any potential hits that came our way. So maybe there's some heroic blood in him too. I can still smell the mint though. It's been a bloody week. Blessed be.

Relationship Note on Thena

Thena's competent. I can still see the Grayhope in her, which isn't a bad thing, really. She keeps just enough of a sparkle to keep one interested in what she's going to do next. I'll probably always prefer her not in Iron armor, but we all find our place.

Relationship Note on Calandra

She's as brilliant as ever. I wouldn't miss a single one of her performances.

Relationship Note on Magpie

I might've been a little cruel to Birdie, but the man lost something of mine. And birds peck at each other, right? Something about feathers being similar, maybe? But he cooks a mean imaginary fish and knows how to procure the perfect drinks to pair. That's a good trait to have when minds are otherwise preoccupied with darker things. Besides, we both need to get our ships repaired and maybe we can get some joint deal.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

Joscelin's presence brightens up my life. There's so much that's genuine within her that being in her company is grounding in a sense. Business typically calls us apart, so our time together is often few and far between. But each time we renew that bond, it's like there was never any distance at all. Those are the best kinds of friends. The ones that get you, no matter what occupies you at any given moment. She had my support at the beginning when she first came to Arx. She has my support still.

Relationship Note on Calaudrin

I've yet to meet Refill's wife, Grace, but everything I've heard of her reminds of how fantastic a woman she must be. I think it's a little cruel that he's been holding back from giving those chocolate-drizzled pastries to Silas for all his hard work, but every one gets a little possessive from time to time. I think that's the only reason that he's loathe to talk about her as much as he should. And with everything ongoing, it's only natural how busy she must be.

I owe him a favor for how he assisted Vance though. And perhaps a kick, for educational purposes. I'd say dance lessons, but Guards who are graceful and adept at running across buildings aren't nearly as entertaining as those who do things bards often forget.

I've decided that Dash runs around too much to get fat enough to cutely waddle everywhere. Shame that.

You forget how many hundreds consists of until they're all lined up on the wood of the docks, the stark of the raw cloth rippling in painful contrast against the tar-black stains of the flame-licked woods. It took most of the night to haul them up, though some might've still been left behind. But dozens came down to aid, from the lowest of the low to the Silks on horseback from the gates of the city. And in those terrible moments, there's no distinction between paltry conflict -- just our side and theirs.

Vance was fucked up beyond belief. They found him later that evening, toppled and almost forgotten behind some crates. Khloe, Refills and Birdie were quick in their assistance though, despite the numbers of wounded that still seek care after the incident. Tons of healers were left behind to help, but the constant groans of those in pain always makes it feel like it's never enough.

I'm proud of the family in ways I can't properly explain. Torian sparked to life and showed no hesitation when the invasion happened in the Boroughs. Mae's attitude makes it clear why Audric would favor her - quick and agile as ever, but never hesitating to drop everything to help. Without Orathy's knowledge and aid, everyone would've been in a rougher state. The preparations were bloody ingenious. And Calandra's command and charming sway of her people has never faltered in aiding the evacuation. So yeah. Damn bloody proud.

There's still a long road ahead, but knowing so many hold steady strengthens that necessary morale which spurs men and women both to continued action. For everything else? May the Gods strengthen us to save ourselves.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I showed up to the Tournament Grounds for the event held by Princess Katarina and Princess Alis. A chance to cut through the anticipatory tension? A break from social monotony during these darker times? Keeping coin in my pockets after my terrible runs with wagers? I managed all three with their aid.

I was able to kidnap Mistress Sameera so we both could join Archduke Niccolo's team for the event. I couldn't quite see our competitors all the time, but from the sounds of it, their challenges were rough, hilarious and involved many snowballs. Mistress Sameera proved incredibly useful and while I've yet to actually shake her hand, the rare smile which she shed wasn't lost on me. She's stunning. Really. And probably will silently seethe that I'm spotlighting her in these pages. And the Archduke? Well. I'm his protege for a reason.

I, however, ended up drenched in Prince Edain's dream. Syrup and olives. Two things which... really don't go together. Or belong in a bath. And feels terrible once it gets into the pants and boots.

But for a non-bloody event which required perception and a bit of ingenuity, it was perfect for remembering that laughter exists in a time when it can be so easily forgotten.

Relationship Note on Magpie

There were rumors of two oft-forgotten ships snuggling together in the harbor when they thought no one was looking. It was Birdie who deemed it fit to inform me of such, given that ship-courtship is such a terribly important thing. Especially when the parents might be very particular about who's spending time aboard, what kind of mischief they might be getting into and whether they're out far too late for their own good. We decided it best if we keep in close contact, if only for the sake of the others concerned. I haven't regretted it yet. He has terrible, hilarious stories to share -- often specifically not about him. And maybe an amusing penchant for naming things. As for his abilities with his daggers. Well. It is what it is. At least the busy Hana will always have continued business!

Relationship Note on Moira

It's easy to forget that Moira's younger than me sometimes. She carries herself well, always fusing that perfect mix of eloquent composure with just enough gutter to keep it easy to relate to. We don't run into each other that often, but she doesn't rag on my terrible attempts at poetry (or my ability to empty a room with it), is understanding when I might accidentally decorate a wall with a new hole or three, and always keeps my favorite whiskeys in stock. That Grayhope is a good one.

Blessed bloody be.

What's done is done.
Those dead are dead.

There will be plenty of time for bickering and squabbles, drama and duress when there aren't Bringers a week out from the city. When there aren't dark visions of dire warnings haunting our beds. Those should be the things that keep people up at night. Those should be the problems that should grant focus and dedication and the continued concentration of the Faith and the Crown.

Whatever slights perceived, whatever verbal atrocities committed, so on and so forth, are all small bloody bits in comparison to this very real threat. If you're going to spend your free time doing things that aren't to aid those causes, by the Gods, let it be to enjoy yourself and spend time with your loved ones.
