Relationship Note on Lark

This is...rather awkward, Princess Lark. I possess the receipt for the sword that was made for Sir Preston and did indeed see that he saw to his armor. I agree that receipts do not lie and I don't think the purchase and upkeep of weapons and armor for a Defender of the Faith would count as unjust use of funds. I'm afraid I must refute your evidence as condemning someone based on misinformation is not the right thing to do. I would be happy to produce this receipt, but the work is clearly mine and clearly done recently.

Relationship Note on Lark

I, child, wake every morning in the Barracks of the Rectory, upon a cot, owning nothing but my small-clothes and incidentals. I own a backpack, a chest, and a piece of cheese of a certain brand I am fond of. I have one vice, that of imported darkwater coffee, and I admit to indulging into it every few days.

I give the whole of my life to the service of the Faith: I train those who are weak, I speak for the poor, I help those in need. That is my life. I challenge you, little princess, to live a life as humble as I, with not so much as a bedroom of my own.

Yes, the Faith arms the Templar: and I am one of those very few chosen to guard the Dominus himself from time to time, so my arms are admirable. But I do not own them. When I give my life for the Faith, which I will do, mu armor and my sword -- if it can be recovered -- will pass to another godsworn servant of the Holy Knights of the Temple.

Does the Faith arm me? Yes! Absolutely. For I am sworn to give my life for the protection of the people.

You, silly child, try to turn the defense of Arvum and the Faithful as if it were some sort of indulgence. Lies drip from your royal lips, scion of Grayson. Spend one month within the Rectory's barracks-- after you have atoned your sins-- and know the life of the Templar, and you will know we do not live in anything like luxury, that we do not care for gold.

The Holy Knights of the Temple are the shield and sword against the darkness: we live and endure for the Faith to survive.

You are right, Princess Graydon. Receipts do not lie. They tell a specific story for me: of a man devoted to the Faith preparing to fight the darkness and supported by the Faithful to ready him to be the weapon most suited to that cause.

Your childish attempts at maligning me as one spoiled on the extravagance of the Faith is transparent and makes you look the fool: The Templar guard the Faithful and wage holy war against the darkness. And for this, we sleep in a communal room of cots lining a wall along with chests for our few privates.

We do not sleep in safe, private chambers as you do: we do not sleep among silks, wear silks, nor spend silver as if it were sand to buy the luxuries you are used to. We serve. The Templar serve.

Relationship Note on Lark

My sister is a studious and competent woman. She may have been a bit too bookish in her youth for me, but I was always off causing trouble and swinging swords around. I have no problem admitting Lark is far smarter than I am. But we share much in common, including a love for our family and a determination to see it prosper. I admire her and hope she realizes that.

Relationship Note on Lark

The recently appointed figurehead of House Grayson. She seems a shrewd and possibly even no nonsense perhaps. This appeals to me as both a knight of the King's Own and a citizen of the Compact.

This of course warrants further investigation to determine the validity of my own thoughts on the High Lord of House Grayson and one of the Regent Council.

Relationship Note on Lark

I have -- proposed to Princess Lark.

It is a logical choice. Of Grayson and its vassals, she is perhaps one of the smartest and most capable, which is what one should wish for in a familial addition. She is a Minister and now Voice of House Grayson. She clearly holds the trust of the Lady Regent, based on her place within the party to the Twilight Court.

And she is -- attractive. In a particular way, perhaps, but she is certainly not objectionable to look at.

I would...prefer not to put myself forward. I don't know what I'm waiting for, if not a match with a clearly intelligent partner who has much to offer Gemecitta. Whatever my feelings, my mind knows full well that the one match I would make for myself will never happen. No matter everything else. Even if the king were to suddenly awake. The number of changed circumstances that would make such a thing possible... No. Perhaps if she felt for me the way I felt for her, it would be different. But no.

Princess Lark is a sound alliance, and I am the most worthy candidate to offer her.

She is -- considering it now. She did mention that perhaps some attempt at romance would not go amiss, which is ridiculous. This is not a romantic proposal, and I had sized her for a more practical woman than that. Still, I visited a bookshop and a jeweler and found items I believe to be appropriate. It is little enough to sacrifice.

I suppose now I simply wait. It is an aggravating feeling.

Relationship Note on Lark

Have you ever met someone that you've looked at and felt like you were staring at a mirror's reflection? Not in the sense of being an exact copy, but rather, someone with so much similarity and intent of purpose as you, but seems to go about it in the same way you would. Where the Princess is fair, I am dark. Where the princess favors the tools of logistics and information to achieve understanding, I work with the tools of emotional appeal. She favors solitutude, I thrive on the energy of those around me. And yet we desire the same things, and in some ways the manner in which we structure our efforts to reach them are exactly alike. I don't know if this is the basis for a significant friendship or a frustrating clash of manner and a method, but I do think once we find our rhythm, we will be a formidable team.

Relationship Note on Lark

A cousin to Princess Lou, Lark seems to be a no nonsense person, down to earth and practical in ways I can appreciate. I don't know her well, yet, but she has made a good impression upon myself. I would like to get to know her better.

Relationship Note on Lark

Continuing a trend for the Grayson ladies, the Princess Lark is a mystery. At least, in this case, the mystery seems a benevolent one. That is one pair of gloves that is never going to come clean, however.
