I sit here in my study, writing out this journal. I find myself pondering the notion of writing a book or a series of books. It would be something new and different, which my friend is persistently telling me that I should consistently pursue. Find new things and do them.

The fashionable thing seems to be writing under an alias. That alone I could have a great deal of fun with.

When yesterday was a bad day, start the following day off with a piece of pie. That day has already started in an improved state. The philosophy of pie.

There has been a dire lack of pie eating competitions hosted. I hope someone remedies that soon.

I want pie.

Relationship Note on Josephine

I met Josephine Arcuri through Lord Grady. At the time he was her patron and they had a most noteworthy business relationship. All good things tend to dwindle to a close though and as time went on, their business relationship was set aside. Whether temporarily or otherwise, who is to know.

Yet despite the change in their relationship, Mistress Arcuri has remained a steadfast friend of House Deepwood. Whether in matters of business, trade, or other needs that the Woods have had? She has been there to helpfully provide her aid. She has shown that she understands that business and friendship can have a place at the same table, but they can also be separate from one another. When I came calling at her door and sought her assistance with a matter, she rose to the occasion. She didn't simply fulfill the request that I had, she went above and beyond. Any expectations that I may have had weren't simply met or exceeded, they were altogether shattered with the power of her effort.

That is why I and we of House Deepwood hope that when the time arrives that the Crafter's Guild selects their new leader, that Josephine Arcuri will be given the opportunity to show her strength and values to the Compact as a whole and to those who will come to rely upon her as the new Guildmistress of the Crafter's Guild. She will undoubtedly have deep shoes to fill following after Guildmistress Joscelin Arterius, but I believe that she has set a fine example for many after her to emulate in one way or another that will usher them toward a path of prominent success.

When it comes to the performance of duties in the Iron Guard, sometimes you simply have to use your head. Swords, axes, pikes, fists, clubs, and all the rest are swell. But sometimes you have to really put your head into changing hearts and minds.

To those who have extended their aid, whether directly or indirectly, to House Deepwood or its vassals these past few months? You have the sincere thanks of the Woods. We appreciate each and every one of those who have stepped forward with an offer or action of aid. Whether from allies, friends, or those who will someday become something more? I will not forget it.

I miss my beard and leg hair. I look forward to their growing back.

The temporary loss of it was well worth it, though. Sometimes sacrifices must be made in the pursuit of a good cause.

All this talk of poetry causes me to recall a memory from years past. When I had a need for pretty words wrapped together that were determined to be given to another, I hired someone to write them.

Help another put food in the belly of themselves and their family. Hire a poet today.

Relationship Note on Kenna

As I prepare for dinner this evening, Patsy has delivered a note. Or at least his idea of a note. An entry made to the archives by Lady Kenna.

It's always a pleasant thing to have the kind words of another humble you just before dinner. It helps to put things in perspective and makes me all the more thankful for the meal to come. Sometimes the perspective of another can prove useful in clearing our thoughts and helping us to see the situation with greater clarity. I'm thankful that Lady Kenna entrusts me with playing that role in her thoughts.

Relationship Note on Zhayla

P.P.S. Dumpling, not Buttercup. I helped name her and can't even get it right as I'm writing it down. Dumpling! Not Buttercup. It should also be stated that I wouldn't really have a statue of you erected fashioned from carved genitals. I've got too much respect for you to actually commit to that lame joke.

Relationship Note on Zhayla

Lately you've been on my mind. Well, what you were. Only the Queen of Endings knows what you've become since you were you. I miss your presence, I miss your friendship, and I miss your thirst for growth. In reflection, I see how much you truly honored Lagoma in your life. You were always trying to make yourself better, whether it was in your training or just you yourself. You took orders well, but I also knew that I could rely on you to handle matters yourself if left to your own devices.

We ensured that Buttercup found a good home. Dauntless wouldn't leave her alone and it seemed right that someone get use out of her. She was made for battle, even if she doesn't seem it on the surface. For a long time we've discussed having a statue of you placed on the grounds, but we often find ourselves frozen with indecision centered around the discussion of the specifics of said statue. Stone? Metal? Wood? Dicks?

Oh, right. I've developed a little bit of humor, apparently. I can't take credit. I've had a very reliable person to hold my hand and guide me along that path, with a great focus on enjoying my life and not restraining myself needlessly. I think you'd have liked the change.

I'm going to keep this short, so I'll say one posthumous thing: I'm sorry that I implied you could have been a danger to the Marquessa given your origins as a prodigal. I was a different person back then and carried prejudices that I now find myself fighting against from others. I won't call myself a champion of prodigals, but so long as they are innocent as individuals? I will strive to defend them like a good Dragon should.

I hope that Vellichor gets this message to the Queen of Endings who may in turn get it to you? Perhaps? Maybe? Would you even remember me at this point? Probably not, but it's worth a shot. I don't know how it all works. But if Vellichor and the Queen could do that? That'd be super.

P.S. Say hello to OMEGA for me, please?

The only constant is that everyone is guilty of something before the Sentinel.

The people of Old Oak have prospered. The prodigals of Old Oak have provided tremendous aid to their people. Our collective people. A diverse and equally vital people.

I and we will defend them not simply because it is our sworn duty, but because it is our honor to protect those who have done nothing wrong besides exist. Those who placed a piece of their faith in us when they chose to rejoin the Compact under the banner of House Deepwood. Their only crime has been to return their strength, honor, and faith to the Compact. We will not be intimidated, manipulated, or threatened away from our principles.

Let us not forget that when the Compact needed allies, it was an army of painted prodigals with the three trees of House Deepwood on armbands that fell upon the northern flanks of our enemies when the Compact found itself under siege. Prodigals. Humans. People born on the back of Arvum itself. They did not win the battle alone, as no battle is ever carried to victory by a single action or a single person. It is a joint effort, with multiple parts and engagements contained within a larger framework. Their contribution to a Compact victory can not be ignored.

That display of honor, duty, and bravery when they were so very freshly joined with the Compact solidified their place among us. Regardless of the actions or inaction of their ancestors in centuries past, they proved that those who live today were willing to pit their mettle and flesh against our enemies, for the safety and future of the Compact. That is worthy of my respect and I will defend such a people. People who are recognized and accepted citizens of the Compact - not chattel to be used when convenient and then discarded when danger or need has passed.

Let us not forget, House Grayreeve, that it was Marquessa Samantha Deepwood who brought thirty thousand of such people back beneath the auspice of the Compact. It was the liege which House Grayreeve has so easily disregarded oaths to who brought greater strength and security to the Compact. Much like battles, the safety of the Compact is built upon the backs of many parts feeding their responsibilities to the whole. It is not too late for House Grayreeve to make amends to House Deepwood and the Faith of the Pantheon, before returning to being contributing members of our civilization.

The blame for House Grayreeve's actions does not fall upon the shoulders of the ennobled, prodigals who bent knee to the Compact, the freeing of thralls, the schools, pie haters, cowardly poisonings, or any other groups or actions that would be used as a scapegoat for the actions of the disloyal.

The blame for House Grayreeve's betrayal falls upon the shoulders of Count August Grayreeve. Throwing oneself behind him in support makes one loyal to his delusion and admits the willingness to follow one who so readily discards an oath given to their liege.

The treachery he so doggedly pursues reveals the shallow depths of his integrity.

Relationship Note on Kenna

Your skill and Gloria's grace saved you twice. The sword was your tool to accomplish it. It is a very fine hunk of metal without a steady hand to hold it.

Thank Gloria for courage in battle.

Thank Dame Ida Ferron for the dependability of the sword. Many blades in my personal armory were birthed from her forges, by her hands.

It's a sad state of the world when a tragedy unfolds and it's immediately thought to be a conspiracy of some variety. Sometimes bad things just happen, no matter the preparations made. Or not made. I'm sorry to hear the news about a noble and a tragic mishap with wolves, it's a most unfortunate bit of news and I hope that a measured and reasoned response may be made to the issue.

We need to recognize we do not live in an imaginary place (debates about Aion and creation aside) where the world beyond the walls of our fortresses are safe. Rarely should we consider ourselves free to gallivant about without consideration for the perils of the world. Doing so is playing with fire and while one may get lucky regularly, eventually the fire will win.

If leaving the city is a necessity? Very rarely do so alone, always do so armed and able to defend oneself, and a good horse goes a long way. Literally and metaphorically.

Relationship Note on Shard

Sir Jak Whitemane has some explaining to do. He insisted for the longest time that I should trust in my equipment (so long as I paid it proper respect and maintained it well).

Thanks to an educational journal entry provided by Shard, today I've learned that I'm supposed to avoid the enemy's weaponry in the midst of combat. No more arrows in the back or need for a shield, Gloria! Why try to take OMEGA's charge when one could literally just meander to the right? This has truly opened a plethora of paths (likely to the left or right) before me.

Look out, world! Rymarr's learned the importance of sidestepping!

My family and I were able to join King Alaric Grayson IV and the former Radiant of the Whisper House, Selene, for a quiet dinner. To say that I felt out of my depth surrounded by the most socially adept individuals (possibly even Nara included in that list) that I've had the distinct pleasure to dine with all at once, would be an understatement. We must face the things which make us uncomfortable though. It's an important part of living. I went without my armor as that didn't seem proper given the setting and matters of history that have yet to be laid to rest. We really must come up with some rotating pass phrase to limit any risks.

His Majesty was, as ever, a friendly and charming individual who truly encapsulates greatness. His smile is infectious, in only the most pleasant ways. Nara seemed so taken in by his charms, which I will confess makes my heart soar. Whisper Selene was the very portrait of elegance, class, and only enhanced the distinction of the quaint gathering. Too much, perhaps. It's like one day finding a dragonweep the size of a fist while walking a familiar path. Nara enjoyed herself, even if she was quick to be shuffled off to enjoy the company of others nearer to her own age. Nara hasn't stopped talking about her visit to the palace since we returned home. Nara. Nara. Nara. Nara, Nara, Nara. Bold and fearless Nara.

It feels like a lifetime ago that I would walk the halls of the palace, visit the royal dining room, patrol the gardens, and practically scoured the palace poking my head into every nook and cranny. It was an opportunity to walk something familiar, but due to the passage of time so very distant. I have missed the palace and its peoples. It's a wondrous world, even if one must step lightly and carefully to avoid the politics. Up to and including agitating a High Lord or two because you refuse to answer their leading questions. Having the politics brush up against you and breathe heavily in your ear is worth tolerating in exchange for the grandeur that is the palace.

There was talk of a statue being made on an unrelated topic and it is the results of that discussion that I am very interested in viewing, because in my imagination it's going to be the envy of many a noble who will soon be scrambling to follow the latest trend. I can only imagine the craze that will follow after that thing is put on display. Everyone will want something or someone memorialized in such a way, all so that they can join the group.

Ultimately it was one of the best dinners that I've ever bought through charity. Silver well spent and if I'm being honest, I should have been charged much, much, much more for the time that I claimed.
