Relationship Note on Delilah

I actually wrote about this some time ago.

Language is the first magic.

The magic that everyone can have. The magic that is accessible to all who will learn it.

And it is tremendously powerful.

People always seem to be so surprised when they hear how hawkish I am about events in the Mourning Isles.

I may be part silly and part fabulous and entirely amazing, but I am an Islander by birth.

To those who go to fight, I say leave tears in your wake.

They're real and they're terrible and I hate them.

Wash does owe me three hundred thousand silver, though.

The rollout for ironwool seemed like it would be rocky, but from what I understand merchants are buying it as fast as our people can make it. It's not surprising there are jokes. All bold endeavors result in those who doubt, who fail to understand, who jeer. And when all is said and done we have created something new. Armor that looks fantastic. If some wish to use it to scrub their pots, then that's up to them, I suppose. I can't really talk. I'm using alaricite to make a lute.

How does someone start a letter accusing someone of being an idiot and then write something like "In some ways, this talk of war, the fighting, it only makes us as bad as them." and not just explode from the cognitive dissonance?

I'm delighted to announce that the Bard's College will be hosting my next engagement, Dauntless, the Stand of Sir Erec Redhill, an opera about that very thing, this winter. Sir Erec and Angus the Goat are cast, the set is being built and costumes are coming together. Now I just need a couple dozen people who can sing while falling off of a bridge.

A good show if I do say so myself.

Everyone was rather excellent, and the audience seemed engaged.

Good work by the Second Mockingbird in organizing the whole event!

Honest question.

Was your grandmother that impressed with a five year old Juliet Fidante?

Or were you not named until your teens?

Either makes for an interesting fact worth sharing.

Relationship Note on Alrec

Let us celebrate the life of Alrec Magaldi by celebrating his greatest accomplishments.

At the age of 10 he learned his alphabet, mostly.

At the age of 15 he raised a prize chicken for the Darkwater fair.

At the age of 19 he distinguished himself fighting for House Thrax in the Tyde rebellion.

At age 20 found his look and stuck with that unfortunate beard for the rest of his life.

In his mid twenties or something he abandoned his oaths to House Darkwater, betrayed and mass murdered his own men because he decided he'd rather work for Setarco since it's got nice weather or whatever and became a hireling for House Pravus.

At the age of 32 he won a stew-eating contest at the Murder of Crows.

Wow. What a storied life! Admiral Alrec Magaldi, the something-something of Setarco, folks!

My Nan used to tell us that one.

She did funny voices for the different beasts.

I miss her. Too bad she was eaten by bears.

Ah, Spring. Thank Lagoma that the seasons eventually change.

Of course this does mean that damnable summer is coming up behind it.

It must be very freeing to assume bad faith on the part of anyone with whom you disagree, so you can dismiss anything they may have to say before they have the opportunity to do so.

The best part of this season are the stews, but I also enjoy the desserts.

I, too, enjoy making complete non-sequiturs.

It is a funny thing to say that all we can do is honor the Faith in the same paragraph where one dismisses the words of a legate of the Faith as a temper tantrum.

On the one hand I don't have a particularly strong opinion on "date auctions" except the fact that they can occasionally lead to hurt feelings if one does not bring in as much silver as one might expect. It is primarily for the protection of my ego that I will likely never volunteer for such a thing.

But on the other hand, it strikes me that...

There are two paths ahead of me. One of the paths is the path is where someone says to me that a thing I think of as innocent is actually upsetting so I believe them and decide not to do the thing and instead do another thing. The other path is one where someone says to me that a thing I think of as innocent is actually upsetting but I don't think that their concerns are valid and I do it anyway.

On the first path I am perhaps mildly inconvenienced, but that is the worst of it.

On the second I am less inconvenienced, but I hurt people.

If the cost of my convenience is that I hurt people, even if it is just one person, it seems like it is not worth it. Especially when choosing to do something that will not hurt people is so easy to do, and affects me so very little.
