Relationship Note on Corban

I agree with the notion of there being a time and place for questions. Starting to argue with one's commander about the need to charge when the order is given is not such a time.

But there lies part of being human. We walk between extremes in a constant balancing act.

My response was in agreement to yours, and was to shed stronger light upon aspects you approached but I thought could use further emphasis.

Not all my journal responses are meant to point the flaw in the arguments of others, Marquessa.

Relationship Note on Reigna

It's often the case when one speaks of the contrarian nature of the Mirrormasks. The assumption that because we are called upon to speak up when all else are silent, that we always speak up. It's an obviously simplistic and short-sighted view, but an easy one to grasp and thus rather popular among certain circles.

To question everything is as foolish as questioning nothing. And if one's faith is so fragile as to be endangered when difficult questions are considered, then that speaks more of one's moral failings than the ones of the one who asks.

The implicit trust and unity you speak of has its merits of course. A shieldwall is far stronger than a lone warrior. Yet to sacrifice one's own ability to think for the sake of blind adherence weakens faith, weakens trust. Chivalry thus becomes less the source of high ideals and virtues, and instead a mindlessness obedience far from Gloria, and for that matter, from Skald.

To follow like sheep is no great achievement. To stand together despite differences of nature and belief merits far greater praise. And on that, Marquessa, we agree.

Tehom and Lagoma.

Our Lady of Change's tenets are closely tied to Tehom. While historically the Mirrormasks and Scholars of Vellichor have ever been close, even before the Faith's civil war, one could argue that Lagoma's teachings are as essential. The Mirror is not offered simply for knowledge's sake. Awareness of our Light and Darkness does not end there. We are not to simply accept our passions and do nothing with them. This inertia is not of the Gods, and is not what is expected of us by Tehom.

No, awareness and knowledge are to be used for change. When one's raging core is uncovered, anger that causes the man to lash out at those close to him, it is not enough to simply say "I am an angry man." and accept it. "I am an angry man, but I shall channel that anger." is the better route. To put one's passions to work, instead of simply embracing, is a core principle of the teachings of Tehom. In so doing, one improves not only their own life, but also the one of those around them. In so doing, they change, and grow.

Yet the relationship between Tehom and Lagoma goes further. It is the duty of the Mirrormasks to offer a mirror to those seeking counsel. We, faceless mirrors, are to listen and aid in whatever way we can, to guide others upon the path of self-improvement and understanding. And how can one do such a thing without mercy for the failings of men and women?

It is easy for us to focus on one God or Goddess. Disciples typically have little time to spare for more than one, given their duties that await beyond the time they donate to the discipleships. Are Mirrormasks not dedicated to Tehom? Yet it is important for every member of the Faithful, for every disciple, and even more so for every Mirrormask, to pay homage and ever strive to gain greater understanding of the entire Pantheon.

The Thirteenth lies not outside of the other twelve, but linked to every single one, forming the spokes between our world and the divine. Something for my fellow Mirrormasks to consider as they offer advice and counsel to the visitors of the Shrine of the Thirteenth, and in their daily lives beyond its mirrored walls.

And when our own understanding falters? The Godsworn are there, as invaluable resources ever ready to advise the Faithful. Despite my disagreements with many things Grandmaster Preston wrote, that at least is a point we both agree upon.

And yet, you would deny an absolute that was... never proposed. As you have suggested, perhaps you should spend some of that time at your disposal to refresh your knowledge of Tehom and His dogma? The first three levels should be enough to put your fears of such absolutes to rest. If they don't, then I'll be at a loss on how to help your case.

As to your following point, do feel free to explain it further. Were you attempting to say that the difference between Lycene Liberalism and Oathlands Orthodox, made starker with the civil war that followed, was small disagreement? Or were you trying to express something entirely different?

Look upon every perspective. Look. Words are important, and look does not yet mean speak, or ask. Look, and think. Is there a side to this that bears bringing up, without which we might actually step away from the Gods further than if we were to blindly follow?

If such is the case, what would be best? To say nothing and obey? Or speak up and in so doing, follow the true will of the Gods? You spoke of Marach, Grandmaster of Templars. Allowing nothing but obediance to the then Dominus would make those that murdered him traitors rather than guardians of the Faith against heresy.

You can't have it both ways, Grandmaster.

It seems you've failed to read my writing properly. Have I written that all questions and doubts should be raised? No. Much as I might enjoy discussion, we would all be served if you saw what is rather than what you wish to see.

Relationship Note on Preston

The idea that the worship of Tehom, and in effect the Mirrormasks, merely bring "divisive doubts", as you seem so terrified of, is a sadly common idea.

Yet, it is much more than mere doubts. It is to look upon a matter with every perspective possible. It is to listen to every side of a story, and discard it not for its unpopularity. It is to listen to the accused while the mob frothing at the mouth howls for blood. It is to see beyond the blindness of self-righteousness and temper it with the notion of exception. It is to think, where others would slash and burn.

And it is to remind that even Godsworn who have spent their entire lives within the embrace of the Faith are not above their own failure of understanding.

And to answer the matter of doubts and the "virtue" of unity, I would remind you of the writings of the then Legate Orazio on the matter, should you require a refresher. You can start at 5/27/1008 AR and go further back from there.

Not an association I've often heard, but a fitting one. Our choices rarely keep us on one straight path. It wavers and curves, closer and further from the Light and Dark. We understand that, for such pivotal moments, quiet contemplation, or a faceless listener, might be required. Hence the Shrine of the Thirteenth.

Many dread Tehom. Terrified of the Mirror and its Lord, they avoid mention of Him in their prayers, shy away from His Shrine, and do all that they might to forget that the Thirteen Gods are indeed composed of a Thirteenth. I pity such individuals, for in so doing, they put their very souls at risk.

Tehom teaches many things. The importance to heed the opposing view, to never forget the necessity of exceptions, the need of balance between the virtues of the Gods themselves, and the balance between the ideal and the reality. Yet, arguably more importantly, He teaches the necessity of facing one's passions.

Ignoring them, ignoring our own mortal failings, or even the possibility of such failings, leads to being unable to deal with them properly when they are met. By refusing to even understand the truths Tehom offers, you are weakening yourself to the influences of darker passions, and ensure that as soon as your vaunted discipline fails, you'll fall.

A guard standing right next to the fire won't see the assailants approaching. One who stands closer to the night's darkness won't be so blinded, and will be able to do their duty.

My son.

You've arrived at an interesting time. As we gather to face yet another crisis, I find my thoughts often return to you. What kind of world shall you inherit? What new threat shall you be called upon to face, when your time has come?

I shall strive to ensure they are few. And if I cannot? I shall ensure that you shall have the tools to conquer them, whatever they may be.

It is a father's duty.

Relationship Note on Eleyna

For a time I thought I had two siblings. Then it turned out I did have two siblings, just not the two I called brother and sister for most of my life.

Then I lost one before I could ever truly know her.

Eleyna remains, and she's proven to be a startling source of support and love. I am not one to usually speak of such things in the whites, preferring my musings to remain private. Yet, it would be unfortunate if the affection and gratitude I feel were kept forever silent, unknown till my death would see her read my black journals.

So, there you go, Eleyna.

As my legal understanding has its limits, I wondered if there had been a ruling regarding the status of ex-Thralls who unlawfully bring an end to their thralldom, through violent means or simply escape. Has the Court ruled on such a case yet? Is there a standard process to judge such, in the Mourning Isles and elsewhere?

A pure wolf is difficult to keep as a pet. I've found it is better to make use of a wolf-dog hybrid. Easier to control, and they make excellent guard dogs.

Mind, hybrids have enough of the wolf in them that you can't let your guard down, but you don't get a lapdog when you need it to tear off your enemies' throats, do you?
