Always be practicing. Keeps the skills sharp. Especially the skills you're going to be needing when those siege towers start heading this way.

If your cousin gets annoyed, well, she was probably going to be annoyed by -something- you did anyway, so it might as well be for a good cause.

Relationship Note on Ann

If the true test of character is what someone does when no one else is watching, then the true test of scholarship must be what someone researches when no one else is demanding the answers. I think that I have yet to meet a purer researcher or a more fearless scholar than Princess Ann Redrain, and that's why I've started to get my pack of ropes, shovels, hooks, and other adventuring gear cleaned up and ready to go again.

I would feel rather left out if she went on a research adventure to discover interesting things without me.

Relationship Note on Caprice

In the interest of holding myself to the promise I made (and at the risk of potential spectators taking note) I am publicly recording my commitment to go to my little big sister's shop and let her work her spectacular skill at silk to dress me up in an actual, fashionable, not-to-be-worn-beneath-armor set of clothes, the particulars of which are entirely up to her whim and discretion.

Relationship Note on Mira

My cousin and I were born one week apart (I am the older, wiser, and more worldly experienced one, of course) but apart from that just about everything else about us is completely dissimilar, to the ongoing amusement of the Artiglio family at large.

Still, it's nice to see her around and about in Arx now starting up her new law practice and everything! Our youthful spats are just water under the Sovereign Bridge now and it's up to me to make sure she doesn't lead a completely boring life barricaded in by textbooks and whatever in her office.

Speaking of, I need to get her a good officewarming present after the siege is over.

In other news, I am now the second-cutest and second-best-at-hopping Rando in the capital.

I hope I'm still the best bouncer Rando, because if not that would be kind of embarassing.

Relationship Note on Sparte

I remember meeting the kid coming into Arx pretty much fresh off the farm, wide-eyed as can be. Now half the time I turn around I see him down in the Lowers and up on the wall whacking Bringers like an old veteran with that big sword of his.

They better appreciate him in the Iron Guard! He's come a long way.

'Veiling' is a new term I've regrettably had cause to learn recently, it means "to make it vexingly difficult to see a Bringer when you need to smash it with a mace".

Relationship Note on Edelma

The Sword of Giant's Reach has definitely picked an opportune time to arrive in Arx with her tales of Formorians of long-ago, and apparently not-so-long-ago now as well.

If only she could get over her shy reserve and hesitance towards making wisecracks every other time she says anything, then she'd be lots of fun to hang out with at inns.

Relationship Note on Umay

Youthful as she may be, she nonetheless clearly has the grace and dedication to be an exemplary member of the Faith for years to come. Her open heart and genuine desire to help others is a real inspiration. If she ever needs a hand (or two), then mine are hers whenever she needs them.

Relationship Note on Roland

It's not often you get to meet an individual that seems to have stepped straight out of the storybooks, but if there's a better representative of the Valardin ideals than this man, I haven't met them yet. Humble, stalwart, valiant, and courteous. Everyone else I've met that also knows him has not had a single ill thing to speak about the man. It's been quite the honor to help him out with his appointed tasks, and I'd unhesitatingly do so again in the future.

Hopefully mindful now of all the ill-considered ideas you had at that age, please feel free to resume enjoying your whale tales.

Relationship Note on Aureth

If I had to describe anyone I knew as consistently 'beleaguered', unfortunately for Aureth I would probably have to select him. On the other hand, this may turn out to have been a fortunate bit of preparation, because it seems like he's more likely than not to become the newest Legate of the Pantheon before too long. I'm not sure what they'll call the position, though. The Legate of the Lost, I suppose?

The King has awoken! Doubtless it will take no short amount of time for him to fully recover from being practically bedridden for so long, but... well, to me anyway it seems the death of the Queen and the disaster that killed the High Lords and left the King in his state was where events first began to take the dangerous turn for the Compact that they have. Ever since then, it seems like what tidings we've had have been far more often ill than good. Armies on the march, traitors in the Iron Guard, disappearances in the Boroughs, even the sun going dark for a small while!

But if the King can be revived after most hope had been lost, surely it proves we are not doomed to decline and the setbacks we have suffered can be turned around. It doesn't make the army bearing down on us any less dangerous, but I feel much more confident today nonetheless.

I had the opportunity to attend a pair of religious ceremonies recently. First, the induction of the former Lady Bianca to the Godsworn and the position of Archscholar, an honor well deserved and you had only but to look at her predecessor the now-Dominus Aldwin's obvious pride conducting the ceremony to know that the Vellichorian priesthood is in the best of hands.

Immediately afterward was the Blessed Light ceremony at the temple of Lagoma. It was quite the striking thing to see and even participate in firsthand. The variety and totality of all the lights as they spread was indeed a moving sight to behold. I happened to be in the training center when that fine guardsman Sparte first envisioned the idea and he should be proud indeed to see it come to fruition. I think I'll keep the lantern I posted outside the Whisper House there as a permanent fixture, actually.

The celebration in honor of the Archduchess was quite the fitting event for her and I enjoyed attending immensely. I got to catch up with several friends and family both old and new, and undoubtedly the highlight of my night was being able to have a few dances with Lady Juliet before the ballroom floor ended up a little, er, cluttered.

My dear elder sister Caprice and I had the great honor of being invited to dinner with the Velenosa family this evening. It was quite a lively social affair, and it was nice to catch up with my cousin and some other old friends I had not seen in a while. I even got to write a bit of poetry. The only thing that could have improved it would have been to see Uncle Donato as well, but perhaps next time. At least I don't think I made such a poor showing that there won't be a next time, I should hope. I was entirely kidding about bringing a helmet to future dinners, I assure you!

The Old Oak Festival was a fine affair, with the very best of food, entertainment, and company. The Marquessa of Deepwood certainly put on an exemplary display of Crownlands hospitality and I am sure all the guests and refugees in attendance had their spirits well raised by the joy and laughter on the night.

It will also likely not surprise any readers of this journal that I won the pie-eating contest.

Relationship Note on Pietro

I did not have any close personal associations with the valiant souls who were lost in action in the recent battles, save perhaps a small acquaintance with Lord Pietro Igniseri. His face was not uncommon to see around the training center, and his high spirits and good attitude towards combat practice made him a rather welcome sight whenever I chanced to meet him there. Our styles were oddly mismatched, and our lone spar of note resulted in a inconclusive affair to the point where we decided we'd had enough exercise and called it a draw. He will surely be missed, but his valor will not be forgotten.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

I seem to be running into Sir Aleksei rather often these days! It would seem we have a few interests in common. Fortunately he's a fundamentally good-natured fellow, so it's starting to feel quite natural to work with him even if we don't have any actual organizational sort of bonds between us.

I think I'm also definitely gaining some insight as to why his life seems to be as chaotic as it does.
