The events throughout the city this week were just the cheering-up I think I needed. Of course I am never one to turn down free food and liquor, regardless of context. But the sledding, and the dancing, were perhaps more memorable yet.

Relationship Note on Arcadia

I told you I promised to come back alive.

You said you weren't sure that you could make such a promise.

I wish you had promised, Arcadia.

But I understand. You did what you believed necessary. You always would have.

I will defend your honor even though the breath is gone from you. I will always be your champion.

Relationship Note on Arcadia

The tooth marks upon the Marquessa Stahlben's neck were left there by a half-crazed northern tribesman during our expedition. For that assault, he met with my blade, though I clocked him with the hilt end for my final blow as I do still have mercy in me.

Suffering no further injuries, she'll recover well, if maybe with an interesting story to the scar upon our return to Arx.

This is mostly to say, if she were to claim the marks are my fault, she's fibbing...

Relationship Note on Jourdain

Sparring is an important part of my routine. It keeps your blade and training sharp and lets you experience different opponents with different styles.

But I'd be lying if I said I didn't also do it for the audience that comes to watch.

Which I will also admit almost never ceases to distract me, but that is just show business, yes?

Relationship Note on Iseulet

I suppose I wouldn't entirely embarrass myself dancing at a ball now, would I? It was generous of Iseulet to make some time for the lesson.

How absolutely glorious to be able to participate in the Gold Order Joust! Even if I were not the first place winner - which, should I boast? - I would be thrilled because this is the place where I am most in my element.

I do hope the charity of the order has also done some good for the people in these times. My work as an athlete and a showman is not so important as the people whose lives are enriched by these sports and entertainment.

News the first is that Dominique is discussing holding an exhibition tournament, for charity purposes.

News the second is that I've been drilling hard in the practice fields for our future deployments, but there are challenges. Heavier armor, which might be necessary against our most dangerous foes, also slows my sword arm in ways I hadn't anticipated. I believe more practice will be necessary if I am really to be declared Sword of Highhill - and investing in lighter summer armor might not be ill-advised.

But the third news, which is good, is that apparently the upcoming tournament will be shall we say armor-optional.

Congratulations are in order to Count Blanchard for the magnificent fortress. I am eager to visit and explore the gardens on my next trip out west, which, in fact, may not be long away. I hear they have an elaborate library. Which is not normally my area of interest, but did Katryn curate it...?

A rousing evening at the tavern. I wouldn't have expected it might lead to some useful information about our quest at High Hill, but sometimes these things are serendipitous. What is also lucky is that it seems the Princess Reese would like to paint my portrait! Well, technically, she wants to include my brother in such a portrait but I wonder if I could ask her for a private studio session.

Returning to the House this week just to discover a mountain of responsibilities which I needed to handle. I wonder how Richard was managing this without me. I suppose he's getting along just fine with the ladies these days. The other tasks he has at hand may require someone of my skills, but I hope the possibilities to come won't make more trouble for me than they are worth.
