Relationship Note on Barric

Never, ever challenge a Pravus on a joke opportunity. Especially my wife. She will empty the bank accounts, just to get a laugh.

Which explains the wedding.

I can never fully say what I wish to in person, it seems. There is never time, or I cannot find the right words for meaning. But, as the general of the Setarcan forces, and as Duke of Pravus, I thank all of you. All of you, who stood for my home, and for Stormwall. Whether you did it for honor, for love, for duty, or the Gods, or the simple security of the Compact? Most of you stood for a home not your own, and fought a bitter, ruthless enemy. So many didn't make it home. For that? Setarco remembers you. It always will. I will make sure of that. May the Gods embrace those that fell, and let us spend this time to rebuild better than before, and ever vigilant. The battle is over. The war is not.

Relationship Note on Serafine

I still remember the mice. The fights we never meant. The bouts. The pranks.

I wish those days were to come again. Days of mice and song.

You will be missed. By your people. Your loved ones. By me. Always.

Relationship Note on Lydia

Lydia has returned from Stonedeep. It was good to see her today and to sit and talk. We are the only two left from our immediate family.

Though she is feeling the pressures keenly, I think she will make an excellent Duchess, one that is perhaps better suited to the collaboration and compromise that is necessary for the Compact's continued survival than we have had in generations. There is a lot of work to be done, but I know she is up to the task.

Speaking of which, Nightgold needs an heir...

Relationship Note on Alaric

I have met King Alaric, the fourth of his name.

The other evening, while at the Queensrest Inn, King Alaric arrived with his guards and took up a seat at the banquet table, invite those present to join him for a drink. I found the King to be a man of magnanimous good humor and generosity. He took the time to make personal conversation with all of those present and was kind and interested in every instance, even with someone who was not very politely behaved. I liked him, though I doubt I got to know him in any true way.

It is said that the monarch is more than the person. That, on some level, they are the embodiment of the realm. The idea had never made much sense to me until this night. There was something about seeing the King out in Arx, alive and well, laughing and engaged, that lifted a damper on my heart I had not realized was there, much like the sun slipping from behind a cloud. It was as if the Compact itself were there, and that, beyond simply surviving, it was healthy and perhaps a bit stronger than it had been before.

I write this from the deck of a ship, the port of Arx swimming into view, knowing that I will soon carry it to the archives and that a new chapter in my life will begin.

There is something in the uneasy sway of the ship on the swells that matches the feeling in my stomach at the sight of the Compact’s capitol. That unsteadiness, however, is countered by a renewed sense of purpose, stronger than even I expected it to be.

It would have been easy to stay in Setarco, my son, Valkieri, on my knee. It would have been easy to avoid the horrors and complications of Arx, the incessant threats and world-destroying problems. Setting eyes upon my son it is all I wanted to do at first.

It was also, however, in those blessed days of staring into his guileless eyes, that I became aware of a growing responsibility. I am under no illusions that the world will ever be a safe place. But I can make it a safer one for him. And I want him to grow up knowing he has a father who never shied away from what needed to be done, even if, by so doing, he became a memory.

And, I remember, as the sound of the shore birds grow, I have friends here. Friends that face the same horrors and who have not shirked the work that must be done. It will be good to see them.

Beneath all of these thoughts, a deeper, stronger one, like the current that pulls at our vessel. Belladonna. My wife. Though I suspect there will be things we will never see eye to eye on, I do not doubt that we are fighting for the same future for Valkieri. I will always see her as the mystery she is, and meet her with awe, wonder, and the giddy nerves of a boy.

As if it is the first time.

I've began more formally mentoring my family and allies in the ways of war. After numerous lessons from Archduke Niccolo and Lady General Calypso, coupled with nearly a decade of marching with the Knights, I believe I have found something I am quite capable at. I pray to the Gods that I will be able to train these peers as well as I have been.

Hard to put to words how pleased I am to find this man here, in Arx, when he's needed most, but I'll try.

I am quite pleased.

Three days back, one hundred men and women serving the Knights of Solace failed to report into their superiors. Every Knight actively patrolling in the Lower Boroughs is gone.

Had Felix and I not been in a meeting with Father Orazio, he and I both would have been on the streets that night.

Today more than ever, I seek the light and guidance of Gild.

The advanced training given to the Knights of Solace proved quite successful in the Battle of Pridehall.

If any commanders are unaware of these tactics, please contact Father Orazio to request support. The Knights stand ready to aid the forces of the Compact, always.

Today it is to Lagoma I pray. May she help the souls of the dead find their rightful place in Elysia, and may she give her succor to all those that remain in this world, feeling those loses so poignantly.

I write this prayer today, instead of merely casting it to the heavens, as I celebrate the lives of seven men and women who served the Knights of Solace valiantly, and who died good deaths under my command, against the forces of evil. There were others that died as well, men and women of Grayson, of Ashford, of Darkwater, and I celebrate the life of these men and women, just as I celebrate the lives of any who stand in defense of Arvum against the darkness.

Gods light our path.

The Champions held a fete, wherein, at the end, Champions were auctioned. I cannot say I understood the concept entirely, but that did not stop me from purchasing a well-oiled knight.

Now, what to do with a well-oiled knight.

I have attended my first dinner among the families of the Lyceum. There was confusion about tables, then a man picking at any discomfort he could find, and then a woman splattered in blood, and then a very literal viper loose.

I was not expecting that.

After back-to-back meetings I am happy to report an abundance of cohesion and a draught of ego. While we still struggle to find what we need to know - to learn what is right and what is true - we do continue the march towards victory.

All the while, the Knights march on. The open show of support has not only been critical to our task but quite heartening.

And, as ever, I feel the blessings of the Gods. They are among us, they are here for us, they will not abandon us, despite our unworthiness. We are not alone.

Relationship Note on Anze

To the people of Arx:

I am but a Knight of Solace. I am not the Archlector of Gild nor a Seraph, nor even Godsworn, but I have dedicated the past seven years of my life to honoring Gild's message. I recite, as do all my fellow Knights, the oath we have all taken regularly:

We of the Knights of Solace are as much travelers as the pilgrims that we guard. The goddess Gild lights our path, and we journey as directed. We travel roads that lead to the wounded and defenseless, crying out for succor. We travel roads that lead to the destitute, in need of Gild's charity. We travel every road and every path in need of guardians to push back the darkness of Arvum's wild places, and bring prosperity to the Compact. We are travelers on roads without end.

It was with those words in mind that I went to the Shrine of Gild to seek out Prince Anze Redrain.

When I found the prince, I did not find a trace of ego. I did not find a man scorned. Likewise, I did not find a man weeping and lamenting his lot in life. There was nothing to Anze that I could find besides his dignified remorse and his commitment to the Compact. Through our conversation, where I took it upon myself to begin his lessons on the goddess Gild, I could see so clearly that this was a man who was dedicated to fixing the mistake he made. A man that is dedicated to the Compact, to Arx, and to Avrum.

I realize damage that is done cannot be truly undone. I realize the damage done is vast. But to any and all who wish to know of Prince Anze Redrain, know that we have a good man who means to do all he might to aid each and every one of us. While Prince Darren has ordered a year of Prince Anze's time, I have no doubt in my heart the Compact will receive a lifetime of it. This man is a traveler on roads without end.

While I write thoughtful words, I will also beg any and all that read this to consider the Tale of Prince Anze. Consider your words strongly before you write them. Speak them to the Gods, to the Spirits, to your friends, before you commit them to paper.
