Early in my life, as I was scavenging for enough coin to survive to the next day, I came across a man who could spin the most fantastic stories. He is, in no small part, where my own love of this art form has come from, undoubtedly. Day after day, for weeks on end, I'd take my meager bread and soup and sit with him in the hole in a wall, run down and vacated building that many called home. And always I'd be fascinated by not just the words he used, but his subject matter. Never was it simply dry facts, and never was it mere gossip. It was life experiences, told in such a way that any street urchin of a boy like me could understand. The best stories are ones that we have lived and can translate into emotional connections with others.
Far too often in my work here in Arx, I find my eyes glazed over reading through ledgers, reviewing trade deals that drip with such dryness I might as well be in the desert. I'd written to the Count and Countess of Keaton about a potential business arrangement. These matters? Are just a necessity of what one must do to arrange the best ingredients and work for a brewery. I had, in truth, expected yet another of those understandably dry, factual encounters, but to my delight? What I read was as good as any story I might tell. It still contained all of the important information -- but the context the Count painted for me made it clear that his lands, people and trade? Are something he has experienced first hand, not just seen as words upon a piece of paper. It allowed me to far more vividly picture and relate to what our potential arrangement might mean, and for that? I'm all the richer, without even having another silver in my pocket.

A lovely dinner with the Count and Countess Keaton. If someone has yet to take them upon their offer of hospitality, I assure you, do go and you will be quite pleasantly surprised in their reception.
Of course business was discussed, I do not believe that I can go anywhere without speaking business, but the additional conversation of family matters, understanding Arx, and the politics that go on within, they were superbly well prepared and I left feeling educated.
Again, I cannot say enough about this wonderful couple and I do look so forward to furthering the relations between our two houses.

Relationship Note on Kael
Count Kael Keaton - truly, the entire Keaton family - humble me every time they come to the shop and have faith in me to forge a weapon. To be asked and /trusted/ to put a piece of metal between one of his loved ones and the dark shadows of the world is an honor I can hardly describe. The city boasts some of the finest weaponsmiths from across Arvum and I am so grateful that the Keatons choose me to do such work for them.
Also? That the Count occasionally lets me get away with a quip here and there, though I try not to push my luck too much in that regard!
Truly, though, I am blessed for such kind words and faith in my craft.

I am very pleased to note that today Count Kael Keaton agreed to accept my offer of patronage.
I have been searching for someone with a keen tactical mind, who is willing to learn and grow. But also someone who is willing to challenge me when it comes to matters of the defense of the Compact. Count Kael has more than proved his ability in all of the above to me and I am very happy to be formally aligned with him.

Relationship Note on Kael
I have noticed that many of the happy memories shared have a bittersweet tone in them - complicated relationships, moments of something like light in bleak time. I've had moments of cheer untouched by anger or sadness, but I can go along with the theme and perhaps make a gift to my nephew and a peace offering to his cousin, Baroness Blackshore. It is a memory of someone else's happiness.
Nadine was so very happy for a time. It started with those small, bashful looks that would arise for no apparent reason to her younger siblings. Grins at the oddest moments. Rushed partings in the middle of conversations after getting a message, always with the flimsiest of reasons, always with the fleetest of feet.
She only really confided in me the once, one giddy evening talking about how handsome he was, his smile, how absolutely smitten and in love she was.
There was a time, my dear nephew, when your mother was at her happiest, and it was your father that made it so. It may all have gone amiss, but you should know that much was done right. She would be proud of you as I am.

I have come to understand that my dear husband possesses some incredible protective barrier that blocks any and all of my attempts to hit him with my staff. I do not have a reciprocal shield. Despite being close to the width of a handsomely muscled barn door he also possesses the speed of one of our hounds. This is getting embarrassing. The only time I managed to score a glancing blow was when he was standing on one foot, flapping his arms to make Aeryn laugh. Clearly I need to sacrifice some of my reading time to more physical pursuits.

To be clear, this is meant to be tongue in cheek you silly readers!
I do hope I did not put too much pressure on dear Kael to wed so soon upon his investiture. Hearing him so lovingly describe his competitors at the Armor Run last night, it leaves me to worry that perhaps he ought to have been left to woo and romp for a bit longer. I fear that I may have deprived the world of years worth of love sonnets, romantic poems, and the like. I suppose he shall have to heap them upon his wife instead! Better fortune for us that he is so dotingly fond of her.

I must admit that I found few occasions to speak to my cousin when Aunt Margerie brought him into the fold. I assumed he was learning nobility and I had been mostly soldiering and engrossed in my duties. I was determined to become Keaton in my own right. Now that I've found my way to his house in Arx, I should finally get to know him better. *Especially* if there's support needed in Keaton matters.

I know that peacefully turning family responsibilities over to Kael was the correct thing to do, but one cannot help a certain fluttering in the stomach when such things are done. Neither of us had a lifetime of training for the duties we would be asked to undertake, but the possibility always lingered over my life. He seems to flourish here, though. I am pleased to hear of the friendships and connections he has forged. Let us hope that my presence bolsters his confidence in the days to come.

These last few days have been magical. My first wedding anniversary has just passed, and my husband made it so very special. He is so tolerant of my foibles, and he even let me drag him out of bed before dawn so that he could pray with me outside as the sun rose.
This last year has been more amazing than I could possibly explain.
My husband gave me the most incredible anniversary.
I should see if he wishes to pray with me again.
