Relationship Note on Haakon

Den Langen Drager

Dragon Islands
Drawn-out Chain
Bloody Beaches,
Blighted Reign

Shouting Forests:
Angry Shavs!
Spiteful Remnants,
Splintered Halves ...

Vengeful Rebels,
Victims Rent
Stalwart Shieldwall's
Valor Spent

Spearhafts Shattered,
Shackles Loosed
Captives Trammeled,
Traitors Noosed

The Fight concludes;
A Banner Felled
A Hewn-down Post's
Position held

Ivan's Remnant,
Routed, Flees
An Emptied Camp, nigh
Calm Grey Seas

Relationship Note on Haakon

There are times when I wonder if my husband is imbued with the very wind he claims cares not. Restless, yet unmoving. Fierce, yet calm. He so fully embodies it that his steps are steady as he crosses the deck of a wave-tossed ship. I have seen him leap into battle and evade enemy blades as if guided by the air around him. He rides out the storms of my emotions as if he was born to it.

It's been said that he is not good enough for me. But the last year has led me to believe there is none better. A year ago today, our betrothal was announced to all. Today, I ship him off to war with many of our people, praying for their safe return.

The wind cares not. But I do, and I will stand in it until my skin is raw from it whipping around me, until it has struck me to my knees and drowned out my voice with its howling. I will withstand it until the east wind sees him home - on his feet or on his shield.

Gods, let it be on his feet.

To my Lord Haakon of House Eswynd,

Peacocks, like most males, may fly if you launch them from the right angle. The problem is that, like most males, they have a problem landing after falling a great distance.

Warm Regards,

General Piccola of House Tessere.

Listen, you try sounding sane while you're busy avoiding a mace heading straight into your face while your brother-in-law is yelling at you not to play with your food. I was under a lot of pressure at the time, don't judge me!

I don't mean to sound disrespectful, but peacocks and peahens both fly. Quite well, actually. You can find them on rooftops and in trees just like you would crows or sparrows. Beware peacocks in a tree, by the way. Its a terrifying lesson to learn the hard way.

Lord Haakon is a fantastic swordsman and I thoroughly recommend him to anyone that's looking for a Champion for their next duel. Also he's quite funny.

(OOC - I'm an idiot and accidentally deleted this SORRY SORRY)

Sea Shanties with the Eswynds! What an excellent event, as I knew it would be.

This is a lovely story about my favorite subject - myself - and about a friend of mine, and about sailing. Specifically rowing. This is a lovely story about a lot of rowing.

When I came to the mainland, my brother said to me
You won't be a sailor till you sail the northern sea
I know the one to teach you, if you think you can --
Go find Lord Haakon Eswynd, and that'll be your man

I said my lord I'm here to learn, and I am from the Chain
He said I'll blister both those hands, your arms will be in pain
If you want to be a sailor then there's one thing you must know:
How to get into this longship, and row and row and row

Row, row, row, Savio!
Oh the sky is dark and the sea is vast
Row, row, row, Savio!
Or Haakon Eswynd will kick your ass!

We set sail before the dawn and rowed around the bay
Hauling on those bloody oars until well past mid-day
Hours later, shore in sight, I said 'well that was fun'
And Haakon looked at me and said, 'you think we're fucking done?'

Row, row, row, Savio!
Oh sink that oar, pull sure and fast
Row, row, row, Savio!
Or Haakon Eswynd will kick your ass!

Weeks and weeks and more of this, I asked if I've got it down
He looked at me unmoved and said, 'you might not fucking drown'
Sweetest words I've ever heard, the peace and joy of knowing
That now I can sail any sea, thanks to Haakon's goddamned rowing

Row, row, row, Savio!
Oh keep this lesson, make it last
Row, row, row, Savio!
Or Haakon Eswynd will kick your ass!

I think Lord Haakon and I will become good friends. He understands about bread walls, cheese pikes, and heavy fruit infantry. Of course this means if our wives let us live along.

My friend,

There is a difference between being incapable of fighting close and having an advantage in close quarters. Were you to ask my preference on weapons to wield whilst fighting in a narrow hallway, I would pick a pair of daggers over a great sword.

As for on a field, the best place to be is about ten yards from the edge of a pike's point on the back of a horse with a shortbow and a full quiver.

Relationship Note on Haakon

I write this to respond to my friend, my comrade, and a man I would walk into war with readily.

Perfection is a matter of perspective. A woman sees the situation perhaps differently than you would. I can tell you from where I stand that I see the world very differently than you. For, you see, I oft wonder what it would be like to be a man: I wonder if I would be able to keep my beard from getting tangled in my bowstring; I wonder how it feels to feel the pleasure around me rather than in me.

Oh, that I were a man.

I tell you, as a woman, that I have seen many fall to many weapons. I have felled an opponent with an arrow from across a field; I have knocked an opponent off his horse with a lance; I have cut an opponent down with a sweep of my sword; and I have had the unfortunate fate of setting myself upon one with a knife. Of these events, the most intimate is having was the last. A man says many things in his final struggle, but it is what he does not say that stays with you: the feeling of his life on your skin; the sound of his body struggling to breathe in blood; the way his eyes open wide for a few moments and then forever when the Queen takes him.

Oh, that I were a man.

To me, it matters not the size of a man's weapon; what matters is the outcome. Through that lens, I find myself finding seeking that which is smooth, warm, and soothing. When I think of perfection, I leave the thoughts of steel and shields for the gossamer of sweet, savory scents. I am sure you understand what I do not speak of, as does your wife.

I wish you all the best, my friend.

The path to the Abyss is laid with good intentions, no?

Perhaps here is a good application of the Saik words: "Action without thought is slavery."

Good intentions are not enough when they are followed blindly to injurious ends. Good intentions will not undo what is done, nor prevent what is to come, if they are not tempered with analysis and guidance. But you know this. Perhaps another who needs the reminder will see this, as well.

I had a very enjoyable time accepting cookies via different messengers in random hours of the day. I truly think it should become a weekly ritual, contest or not. However one of the cookies caught me off guard. It was.. savory. A savory cookie. How bizzare. However it did not place in the contest, I wanted to praise Lord Haakon Eswynd for sending it to me and also offer my sincere gratitude for all those who participated, you made an innocent Oathlander immensly happy.

Onwards to the next sweet project.

Relationship Note on Haakon

They're reavers.

I'm sure I don't have to explain it to you, but for any non-Isles person reading this journal:

Thralldom is slavery, a majority of thralls are war thralls, quite a number of war thralls were not taken in battle, they were taken through raids, the ones who did the raiding were and are almost entirely reavers, because that's what reavers do, they did not care which Abandoned tribe or village did what when they picked targets for reaving, and neither did they care who they tossed into chains and sold back to the Isles, including children too young to even lift a weapon, even if they'd ever actually seen one before.

Reavers were the slave-takers (and in at least half of the Isles, still are). The reavers who did not want to be slave-takers have had nothing interrupt their reaving, and thus they are not the ones being told to go be liberators now. And I do not understand how anyone can know that and still think setting slave-takers who had no qualms whatsoever in who they killed, or who they enslaved, on nebulous targets like 'the Abandoned' and 'the Eurusi' and 'enemies', with the mandate of 'kill slavers now', are going to give one single, solitary fuck about whether they actually liberate anyone or not. Do we expect them to suddenly be devoted to the cause of abolition? Do we expect them to be restrained, and only 'rescue' actual slaves from actual slavers?

No. They're going to grab whoever they want, wherever they find them, and they're going to do what they've always done, which is to sell people. Because someone's buying, and buying at an extraordinarily high sum. And they're going to sell as many people as possible, because that is a damn lot of money. What's going to happen if Tyde refuses to buy? What do you think happened to a thrall they couldn't sell?

Never trust slave-takers to care about the freedom and well-being of someone they can make money from. Or someone they can't. And never trust anyone who only starts caring about the evils of slavery when you put a price on human beings and say you're buying.
