The Prince Inquisitor has assigned me an important task I will enjoy quite thoroughly. After presenting his dilemma we discussed his options, and it looks like I will be making a short trip to Ashford once the arrangements have gone through. I may grab a few things for my upcoming party at Trader's - why not, if I'm in the neighborhood?

I should reconnect with my brother in Morimont, too, and see if he wants to contribute as well.

I think I will craft a jewelry box, a wooden chest, and a bookcase for the prizes at game night; though I'm not sure what my funds will be like nearer the end of the week, so I may wait until then and just cram all the work into one night. Hopefully my craftsmanship won't suffer.

Relationship Note on Gareth

I confess I do not entirely know what to make of the Prince Inquisitor. At times it feels like we could be friends, but I get the suspicion that he sees me as more of a tool than anything else. Even so, our relationship is mutually beneficial thus far, so I have little to complain about.

Maybe one day he'll even smile.

Relationship Note on Fergus

I faced off against Prince Fergus Redrain during the Melee of the Tournament (or was it TORnament?) of Roses, held by Lady Calista of House Fidante. I think I hit him no less than a hundred times and all I managed to do was scrape his armor and make him tired.

He was ultimately felled by Princess Alis Valardin, but he still sent me a message blaming me for his loss. I told him I'm stubborn and he should expect no less of me. Hopefully next time I'll actually scratch him!

Mistress Ida's skills in weapon smithing are superb. She has an artistic eye, and the weapons at her shop are very affordable. I may have to keep her in mind should I ever have the means to commission something spectacular.

I may end up fashioning my next suit of armor around the sword I just bought. There's no knights with a red-and-silver theme out there, is there? Maybe a Redrain but I haven't seen any.

Maybe add some winged pauldrons for a Griffony-esque touch? Or is that too ceremonial?

I am fond of Master Enzo's paintings, too. I think they may be better than the ones we currently have hung up in the manor; I will have to ask my father about replacing them with the ones I bought soon. They're too dated! I think a few of them must be nearly a century old and "a painting of a lonely prairie" is not particularly inspiring or lively.

I am the proud owner of a steel gray foal, who will be raised as my next warhorse. My current steed, Theodore, has served me well - but he is older than I am. He is in relative good health but I'm not sure I want to lose him on the battlefield; though I have seen very few of those in my lifetime.

I have named him Damascus. I think it suits him.

Relationship Note on Gareth

The Prince Inquisitor is the Grayson royal I've spoken to the most, which isn't terribly surprising considering both of our professions. The surprising part may be the fact that we can get along! I have promised to relay any pertinent information I may overhear from the streets regarding the King's alleged assassination attempt, though I suspect the true puppetmaster is someone higher up in the hierarchy; he may be better equipped to smoke him out than I.

He has agreed to pay me for intel (should I come across it) and has more or less ordered me to pay Mistress Eithne for a fine suit of steel armor - in order to test her skills - which I'm to wear instead due to his physical impairments. I'm not complaining, but it is an odd way to gift something.

Relationship Note on Talen

Master Talen, Sword of Lenosia, is talented warrior who deserves the title he's inherited and the favor he curries. He may also be more competitive than even I am, and seems capable of doing whatever is necessary to secure a win, even at the expense of his honor. Regardless of my feelings on that matter, I suspect I will have to get used to it if I ever intend to be victorious in any of our future match-ups.

Relationship Note on Acacia

The reputation of the Culler family is a complex, dark one... and I suspect Mistress Acacia is of the same cloth, though perhaps of a different color. We can help each other, while keeping our roles intact - though I am sure my intentions will receive some doubt, and others may suspect I'm being bribed somehow if we get too chummy. I'm not sure how much I care yet, but perception does matter.

I received a messenger from a Mistress Acacia Culler after returning from my shift and an offer to 'chat' at my shop. Chat we did, and it appears she wished to become friends as a means to assist each other with our roles in the city.

It appears there are some among the Iron Guard who seek to take advantage of the chaos in the wake of the King's misfortune by extorting money from the citizenry, thinking they can more easily get away with it. Hopefully, with Acacia's aid, we can put a stop to it. It is to our mutual benefit, and to the benefit of many others.

Apparently the guys appreciate the incredibly generic bookcase I have crafted them. Next task? To get them to write in the books. I suspect writing up a general Code of Conduct may be in order, but such an assignment may be better left to the higher-ups than to upjumped commoners like me. Still, at least they now have somewhere to put their sordid romance novels instead of leaving them open for all curious eyes to see; some things are better left unknown.

Maybe the barracks will appreciate a card table, too. Something to look into.

The week has been unexpectedly busy. I was unable to keep my commitments to the Decathlon so I had to drop out of most of my matches and it appears Grayson had no other entrants (slightly disappointing in itself but we're a busy lot as of late). I had met with Mistress Eithne to discuss armor designs but we both needed to cut the engagement short - and I'm STILL not entirely sure what I want. Perhaps something Griffon-themed? But would that make all the actual Graysons jealous? Perhaps something more unique and individualized? Just how unique can armor really get and still be practical?

I also need to visit Master Enzo's shop and see about those insignias, but now I should have ample funds for it. Business at the shop has been good. I should learn how to make larger pieces of furniture soon so it can keep coming.

Dad granted me some money to start up my own shop after hearing I've delevoped a talent working wood. Perhaps this is his subtle way of encouraging me to hone my sales pitch for the good of the family. I don't know how well I'll do, but making a little extra money doing something I enjoy can't be a bad thing.

... That sounds dirty now that I re-read it.

I met Prince Inquisitor Gareth Grayson today at the Trader's Tavern. Though his initial demeanor was somewhat unsettling, he began to drop not-so-subtle hints that he wished for my help in catching the assassins which have abruptly ended the lives of so many noble leaders and has left our own king staring off into space and drooling on himself. A noble cause and one many will support, at least publically. I do wish to help him, but I worry the assailants he is after will learn of what he's doing and take precautions to hinder any promising investigation.

But, perhaps, the prince shows uncommon insight in recruiting those who can listen where he may be unable to. Not many princes would dare to pass the threshold of a dingy commoner tavern to make nice with a common guardsman.

He is also not as unfriendly and unsociable as he thinks he is, regardless of the scars. His banter with the towering Thraxian who intruded on our conversation was refreshingly frank. He insisted he was not an ally of mine, but I suspect that may change in the future.

I also became acquainted with Lady Calypso. She made some startling claims about Southport I do not entirely believe, be she is also good company beneath the icy exterior.

No one of importance showed up for the Rite of Gloria I had organized in the temple. I dueled a templar instead, so our efforts would not entirely go to waste. I might try again some time in the future, but I suspect the crowds are more interested in the big tournaments and their fanfare. Disappointing, but predictable.

Relationship Note on Talen

He puzzles me. It sounds like the rumors about the treachery of the Velenosians rings somewhat true, and he seems brazen in his tactics, but I do not see the inherent benefit in them. People will not support a dishonorable man, though some may condone it. It will make his victories ill-gotten and weak under scrutiny.

Crap. I hope my wounds heal up enough for this; I might just have to organize and watch it instead. We'll see.

I did not fare as well as I had hoped to in either the joust or the melee which followed it, but it could be considered a painful learning experience of sorts. I am perplexed at why Talen had decided to cheat in a tilt he could have won, and in the open no less; it riled people against him, and made his chances of winning the melee slim. Not sure if he's masochistic, crazy, or a mixture of both - I suspect he isn't stupid, though my mind can be changed.

I don't think I harmed Prince Fergus at all in our duel; I simply wore him down. He blames me for his loss against Alis because of this, but perhaps it's a valid point. I wasn't paying attention to any of the other fighting.
