Saw Magpie Grayhope's white journal (not that I check it often or anything, don't get any crazy ideas), if any of those nobles with money to throw around want to come down to the Iron Guard Barracks and shower us with some silver, let them know that we won't turn down the coin. Outfitting all these guards to keep the streets clean isn't cheap.

Despite serious self-doubts that I could pull off any kind of social event without something going terribly wrong (fire, riot, food poisoning, etc...), the Iron Guard's charity event went off without a hitch. We collected clothes, toys, food and other necessities as well a tidy sum of cash that we've donated to the Mercies of Lagoma.
I don't have anything eloquent to say. Except that I'm humbled by the turnout and I thank each and every person that turned up donated to our cause.

Yesterday Guardsmen Thena and myself canvassed the lower boroughs to try and track down where an illness was spreading from. We met up with several other individuals who were doing the same thing, Princess Ann, Princess Sophie, Princess Seva. A lot of princesses. A lot. Also a knight by the name of Armel who I've recently learned is the newest Grandmaster of the Knights of Solace. So just us and a bunch of very important people, a very normal day.
There was a dead woman, but I didn't go to see her because I don't like to deal with dead people. I was briefly concerned that an assistant named Fulbert was some sort of undead thing, but he wasn't. He was just a guy who didn't know anything and clearly needed to get some sun.
And then.... well, lets just fast forward to the part where I was covered in rats. Rats. Covered in rats. I've never been so glad to be a walking tin can as I was that day.
Regular crime. Just want some regular crime again.

I had the opportunity to meet with Lord Harald Grimhall, to speak over preparations to defend the city in the event that Brand's forces attempt to storm the harbor. While I'm not sure I have same thirst for battle as him and his men, he's quite shrewd and I look forward to working with him. I took Thena Greyhope along for educational purposes. She has a good practical, no bullshit way about her sometimes. Even if she sucks as an archer right now.

I don't read many journals, seems nosy. But I scan through some from the guard now and then. The other day, Sparte wrote something that really spoke to me. It was talk of the bloodlust and where it goes once all of this is over some day and how violence is becoming easier for some of those around us.
Last night I witnessed Prince Aiden held hostage by a man. A desperate man, a foolish man. A man without too many smarts. A stubborn man. Now he's a dead man. A fellow bashed his head in. Was it really necessary? I think not. What does his very public death mean for the city? With so many Iron Guard present at the time? Couldn't that strength have been used to tackle him, restrain him? Send him behind bars?
On the one hand, robbing and threatening to kill a young man and stabbing him is very much a crime. On the other? I hate to see this city devolve into a place where we adminsiter justice in the streets, so harshly and with such violence.
The hand that took his life wasn't one of the guard, but we were nearby. It worries me that the negative reaction could spill over to us as well.

Earlier in the week, I took a lantern. All over it I scrawled the personal stories that I remembered from the guards we've lost since the siege started. I'll be honest, most of them were funny or stupid. They were things that make me smile when I look back on them. I felt like if I was going to make some grand gesture, it might as well be sending forth those good feelings into the universe. I try not to dwell on death.

Except that sometimes Death just strolls right on into your heartwarming religious grieving ceremony and bestows an undead army on someone. But not before letting phantom spiders fall down on you and making said man glow with light.
