I was off visiting the menagerie when there was some kind of mysterious pig making off with carrots. Prince Aiden had it all under control until we heard word of Prince Dominick being lost. That sort of took the fun out of it, for certain. Little pig better watch it. In the mood the city is in now, he'll be bacon soon.

Went to a meeting about horse racing, since there's always a good chance to get a bet down when horses are around. There was only Princess Ophelia and the King's stablemaster, Tristan, there, but they had a good talk about different kinds of races and it sounds like they might be starting something. I did let slip about the time I was drunk and fell off an ox, though, but they didn't seem to hold it against me.

Princess Valencia hosted a fight training session, and I dragged myself over. That fellow, Mathias, was leading it, and he's as fast as I remembered. He remembered me, too, and made me fight with a sword instead of my hammer. Gave me some damned fine advice about keeping a helmet around to clap on my head if something goes wrong, too.

The surprise at family dinner was that Lady General Calypso was giving out award for the people who helped her out on her attack, and so now I have medal. And I'm not even a soldier. But it was hard work, to be sure...march all day and then have the forge ready at night to work on peoples' gear. Now with the siege on I've got kids out bringing in whatever scrap metal they can find. Most it is junk like tin and copper, but there's some scrap iron, too, and with the gates sealed we need all we can find. And Prince Anze came in to have me work on his gear, and when I was done he gave me a whole thousand silvers. That's worth losing a few hours sleep for.

Went out into the field with the column under Lady General Calypso. She's damned good at this generaling thing, that's for sure. It was an experience, all right, even though I was back with the supply train working on repairs after every battle. In the city we've got nobles and commoners. Out there there's a lot less of that, but still a big divide between fighters and support. That makes a lot of sense to me. I don't know much about fighting, and them fighters don't know my business either, so it's better we don't joggle each other's elbow when dropping something might mean someone gets killed. Now the siege starts. I'll be sleeping in the forge, I guess. When someone needs work, they'll need it right away.

Lady General Calypso suggested that I should get my butt away from the forge for a while. Did I say suggested? Well, when you patron "suggests"... With all of us heading to the front soon, a Rite to Gloria seemed like a good idea. I went to the main training center downtown and challenged all comers. It turned out there were some very nice people willing to help me out there. I remember (and I don't remember much, since I didn't win many of those duels) a Mathias, and a young woman named Umay, their friend Agnarr, and a woman named Esoka. There was a lord and lady there, too, but I never got introduced. So I fought the duels, and learned that I need to get out of the forge more, for training and exercise, or I'll never ever win a duel with anyone. But with luck the goddess was pleased with the fact that we tried.

It took a lot of work and a lot of practice, but I've finally learned to make rubicund armor. I was able to show Lady Calypso and she immediately bought a set. It's beginning to feel like I'm beginning to fit in up here and I didn't make a mistake coming up from Southport.

Met a young fellow named Owain Llywelyn, a soldier by trade. He gave me some good coaching up in case I need to use one of my hammers in a fight. He pretty much convinced me that I'm never going to be a soldier, but, like he says, the trick is to not be the slowest fellow running away. Seems like a level-headed chap, and I wouldn't mind standing him an ale so long as we didn't get fighting drunk, cuz if we did I'd be looking for my guts on the floor in no time flat.

Played a game of Rogues led by a man named Rainier. We needed to climb a tower and break in for the prize. Not bad, but it showed me how bad out of shape I've gotten since I've been putting in all my time in the shop. Can't run or climb for anything! Lady Eirene was good enough to put up with me on her team, but I'm pretty sure I let her down. Got to get trained up better!

Went to the Fete of Champions for the show and some arm wrestling. I thought I was good back at home, but they pretty much chewed me up and spit me out here. Prince Luca Velanosa fought in the bout and then came and nearly ripped my arm out. He seemed like a good fellow. Then a woman, Zhayla, did pretty much the same. I'm going to need to do more exercising than just waving my hammer around here, I think. Welcome to the big city!

Lady Calypso insisted I attend the Malvici family dinner. My manner weren't up to it but I survived. I was introduced to Prince Anze, and survived that, too. She'd mentioned a fellow named Costas, and he was there as well. I'm told he lives in the Crown Arms as well. There was talk of going to the Hall of Heroes. We also talked about starting a shop...They liked the name Champion Chainmail, so maybe it'll be opening soon.

Met Lady Calypso Malvici today. She's the one who brought me up from Southport in the first place. She offered me her patronage and I accepted it with gratitude. Times have been tight since my old patron, Lord Jannon, died, so everything here feels like a fresh start now.

7/15/05 Got away from the forge long enough to go looking for some fun. Went into a place for the hoity-toity by mistake, all of them sitting around playing the Queen's Game. Can't find a good game of bones anywhere. Met a nice girl named Bethany there, young enough to be my daughter, though. She had a nice dog, too. I promised to have a glass of wine with her someday.
