There is almost nothing I like more than seeing a fleet of newly-built ships hitting the water. Gods, but it gets the blood pumping.

I see Aleksei's decided to spout his nonsense about thralldom being slavery. Of course it isn't, not that facts have ever gotten in the way of his idiotic crusades against Things He Does Not Understand.

His departure from the position of Archlector was a merry respite from having to try to educate the unteachable about things he stubbornly refused to grasp.

A Compact we may be, but let us not take liberties with each other's sovereign territories. That is how trouble starts.

I have never so strongly wished to see someone's next of kin need to execute someone's will.

First time for everything.

I understand the relish some people have for conquering shavs. I don't share it, precisely. I'd rather win the territory because they've bent the knee and sworn to the Compact, than by rolling through shav armies with a sword. Diplomacy costs fewer lives, even if it can be the harder of the two choices. Besides, conquering winds up costing you in the colonization effort, as you'll have fewer hands to rebuild if you're forced to slay them.

If you don't give shavs the chance to say yes, I view that as utterly short-sighted, woefully stubborn, and lamentably expensive.

I'm honoured to accept the position as Grimhall's Admiral. I look forward to accomplishing great things with those sailors and those ships. If I can do Duke Harald's memory justice, and live up to the expectations of Duke Valdemar, I'll consider it a success.

Rivenshari and Navegant have become close friends over the years since they bent the knee to Greenmarch, a fact that I am overjoyed about The idea that I would actually plan a gala event is still a surprise to me, but here we are: a gala held on a flotilla of Rivenshari and Navegant ships - something I believe has not been done for a party.

So, we'll see how it goes. I'm glad to have had help, as this is not in my area of strength. But, the wisdom teaches, one does not get better at things by not doing them. The Whispers had better be on guard because at this rate I'll eventually steal all their party-planning contracts.

One day I will understand why we bother writing such worthless shit in these journals, and why we feel the need to reply to the aforementioned shit with worse.

It's madness. Oh, I'm aware of the precepts and all, but I cannot imagine anyone in 1000 years wanting to read most of this.

The worst part is that people must be spending hours reading random journals. Do none of them have jobs? If I didn't have to write here, I wouldn't. I have shit to do.

Someone asked me if being a strong swimmer was an asset for a life as a sailor.

Let me tell you: if you're out there and you suddenly discover that you and your shipmates need to swim, it's probably too late.

A Word to Husbands - a Poem

To keep your marriage brimming
with love in the loving cup,

Whenever you’re wrong, admit it; Whenever you’re right, shut up.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

Escuma and Whitefrost do not engage in thralldom, Archlector. It's an imperfect word that does a poor job of describing what occurs. I use it only because it's convenient, as trying to help educate people as to the realities on our isles gives *me* a headache. A man can only spend so long trying to explain truth into the shrieking wind before the very effort becomes wearying.

Anyone who wants to know the truth of things can come find me. I'm not hard to find.

Relationship Note on Saoirse

I'm curious: which thralls are you most excited about?

There are the ones who choose it to death or other sentences for crimes. Perhaps you'd like to argue with the Sentinel about justice while "freeing" the host of thieves, murderers, and abusers?

Or there are the ones who, instead of choosing a slow death by starvation - or to be preyed upon in their poverty - have taken out a loan and are repaying it in safety. Yes, their choice to do that to save their families *is* a terrible one and they should never have been given the option. Homelessness and poverty - and the waste of their talents and work ethic - should be forced on them. Better the farmer should lose everything after a drought and the blacksmith after a fire. I'm sure Skald would agree.

If people refuse to understand a thing, perhaps they should refrain from muddying the waters with their blind thrashing about.

People seem to believe that war is when a commander is busiest. After all, that's when the fighting is.

Those people are wrong, of course. In war, your days fall into a routine, and everyone looks to their duties as part of that routine; men tend their weapons, meals are served whose menus you don't plan yourself, and battles are fought.

The busiest times are immediately before and after war. Moving people, materiel, and supplies is no simple matter, not to mention the interminable reports.

And then there's speaking with the families of men and women lost under your command...

No, war is relatively simple compared to all that

I'm supposed to write a will. Fine, here it is:

If I am dead, everything I have goes to Arcelia and she can decide what to do with it. I love her more than I love life itself; she has had all of me in life, so there's no reason why anything should be kept from her in death.

There are notes in my black journals for my sisters. I'd like those read to them.

Well, that was harrowing.

I do not recommend encountering a kraken. It does not go well.

May Mangata give peace and rest to her faithful sons and daughters who perished. May she forgive my foolhardiness.

I just want to point out, that if there is ever a point in my life that I would be inclined to paint any of my ships any color that is not the natural shade of the lumber they were constructed with, that I have lost my mind and that I should be removed from my position. And then hung from the mast of the Leatherback.

Just so there's no confusion, I'm leaving this for posterity.

I have finally been able to collect my thoughts since I was present at the incident at the shrine when it occurred.

To err is human, to forgive is divine.

I have personally witnessed the mistake of human's hubris. If there is going to be any success, learning humility and asking for forgiveness is the first step.

I already know what I am, and I know that I don't like it all much. The evidence of that was made physical upon a gift from my grandfather and again in the shrine.

Knowing what I have to do seems easy. Achieving it will be the hard part. Such are things when your eyes are uncovered.
