I fell asleep my my desk again, surrounded by four empty cups of coffee. I woke to the bitter scent of their dried dregs. The dreams I had left me even more bitter with loss, empty as the cups around me.

I assured Palamon they were just small, selfish dreams anyway. Nothing a fresh batch of coffee won't fix, I'm sure.

I admit, I was a bit cruel when I helped that bitch. Some people truly have no thought that how they treat others may end up costing them their life. Still, winning a race at the cost of a life isn't what I could do.

Sometimes it feels like being a book on philosophy. Now a philosophy built around coffee, just think of the possibilities! Perhaps I'll write that in all my free time.

Perhaps, the brew was too bitter. The drags stained the cup and there's nothing to be done for that.

Relationship Note on Mabelle

Haven't we had this conversation about not getting cut in half before?

My love, perhaps I was harsh when I told you we ought to return to Westrock as you have forgotten that Coffee trees have flowers. I will pray that the rest at home with Fen will be full of peace and restoration. Ivy Mae, Ryland, and I miss you already.

I'll be spending the week in prayer, it seems. All I can hear is the riotous tinkling of a failing negotiation while thinking there are worse things than death.

There are cracks on the surface, like the spine of an oft-read book. It doesn't mean that it's broken, just well loved.

I hope that it's a difference that's appreciated with time.

Traveling in the snow as every bit as detestable as I expected it to be. I will be most pleased when the weather breaks. Ryland is starting to take a shine to the snow, it's past time to show him what a reasonable climate is like.

Not only is coffee a jealous mistress, she's a wicked one, too. How do people live without drinking coffee?

I've never been so sick in my life. I swear 70% of it is not being able to keep coffee down.

I get why Clover's banished it from the house when she's pregnant. Ugh.

For some reason Palamon is sulking. It can't have anything to do with going to a falconry event and losing to a falcon. Totally unrelated.

It looked like cream swirling its way through a cup of coffee. Beautiful.

Not even smoke will remain of them. Not one whisper or word.

Coins have always fascinated me. As a child they were a means to get what treat or toy I wanted. Later i came to understand that they could be used to multiply wealth if used strategically so I could get what I wanted and have more coins after. It is one of the best games, heady risk and vast reward both.

Recently, I'm stricken how beautiful they are. Two sides with interlocking stories being told. Time stamps further stories into them from all the hands and surfaces the coins encounter, gathering grim and grooves never intended. Regardless of the stories told, they are exchanged by two parties who don't often agree on other things but are in agreement that they have equal value. That is an understated power.

But, I've been brooding this week on what if one side of a coin has more worth than the other? When they are conjoined, how do you begin to weigh them? Do they become valueless if the other side is discovered? I admit the thrill of that sort of game appeals to me very much.

Meetings are handy for avoiding weird, spooky fog. Weird, spooky fog doesn't reciprocate, it spawns even more meetings instead. Such a painful, twisted blessing.

Libraries have always been a place of fascination to me. I hope that either or both of Ivy Mae and Ryland grow up to have the same passion. That is part of what the library project in the Aerie is all about, to build a place for them to learn and, hopefully, fall in love with learning.

I'm taking entirely too much pleasure in the expressions in the architect's faces.

A taste of nostalgia in the morning and a draught of sorrow at night makes for a well-rounded day, I suppose.
