Thirteen lives to be expended in blood ritual, with no idea whether the result will be positive or negative, save the word of a party that has already struck against us on at least one occasion. It seems, well, worth the attempt, if not quite well worth the attempt. But the greater questions?

Those who are currently trying to kill you are your enemies. Those who are not currently trying to kill you are your allies. Those who would never, under any circumstances, try to kill you are your imagination.

No, I do not have wisdom to share. You speak with all possible ignorance in so saying. Or, perhaps, duplicity. You may merely wish me to make some comment for the Journals, as is customary. Fine. Write.

When I am discussing things of importance with those under my leadership, I am not sharing wisdom; I am issuing commands. When I am discussing similar matters with those not under my leadership, I also am not sharing wisdom -- I am annoying them before they go do exactly what they wanted to do in the first place.

Call it giving advice, or sharing wisdom, or by any other term you may choose, its only true purpose is as an 'I told you so' delivered in advance. Those are my thoughts on the subject, and I am a great fool for your having been able to convince me to share them.

Of course you may write that in. I said it. But also include that I consider you to be a cheeky little bastard. Good day.

While having an early evening drink and overseeing, from a comfortable distance, the last few hours in Arx of another crew set to sail in the morning, I met briefly with Lord Victus Thrax. He was taking a short respite from fleet business, and left soon thereafter on other business entirely. We discussed the practice of taking on crew from Arx, among other things, and he suggested one or two other routes to look into procuring more warm bodies from. It could prove to be helpful, so I make note of it here, publicly.

I attended the first day of the Twelfth Golden Decathlon. It was a fine enough day on the Bay beneath Seawatch Gate. There were three aquatic competitions, in Swimming, Skiff Sailing and the Grand Regatta.

In Swimming, Lady Viviana Pravus took an early lead on the outward leg, followed by Lord Gustave Blackram and Lord Victus Thrax. On the return, Lord Gustave overtook Lady Viviana and Lord Victus was able to make up some ground, but not enough. Gustave first, Viviana second and Victus third.

In the skiffs, Lord Victus surged to an early lead, followed by Alrec and Acacia Culler. On the way back in, Lady Viviana was able to overtake Acacia. Victus first, Alrec second and Viviana third.

The Regatta had several turnings and could roughly be said to have four legs. In the first leg, Alrec came out first, with Lady Viviana in second and Lord Victus in third. In the second leg, both Victus and Viviana were able to gain on Alrec, with Victus managing to pull completely even. In the third section, Lord Victus fell back into third position, with Lady Viviana and her crew pulling ahead of both Alrec and Victus. In the homeward stretch, Alrec pulled ahead of Viviana again, but Victus was able to pass them both by. Victus first, Alrec second and Viviana third.

There were other competitors on the day, but my eyes did well to keep track of who was vying for the lead positions.

Attended a spirited single combat. The stakes were for a continuing spot in an ongoing combat tournament and the process was combat until the yielding. The one struck thrice before the other yielded. I do not mention the contestants by name because I'm sure that I would make some error in etiquette when referring to one or the other. Probably making three or four times the error by doing it the way I'm doing it. In any case, they both did well and showed courage.

I am in Arx, staying in luxury within a princely room reserved for Captains of proven loyalty to House Thrax. It is an honor on many levels, since I am no longer in the habit of making long voyages and was by most accounts a mediocre Captain even in my prime. Yet I am here and welcomed and look yet to contribute. It must be so. Those who are only a burden to their fellows are not encouraged to linger in my own land and I would expect no less here. There is work to be done on behalf of House Thrax, which will also benefit House Navegant. I am no expert talker but I can string a few words together. Besides, this blasted journal is longer already than anyone would have expected of me. By which I mean this culturally relevant and joyous ongoing writing project. I'm just not starting another piece of paper to do it up like that on. Pen down.
