I would say that I am shocked to find that someone wishes me dead, except, I am not. Thus is the life of a soldier.

I have never wanted a life of war and swordsmanship for my daughter. However, seeing her at the Rite to Gloria last night filled my heart with pride. She is skilled, much more skilled than I was at her age, and she truly has a passion for her sword.

Much if the gray hair upon my head have distinct names. Lately Lord Eddard Clement has contributed the most of them.

The garden has been safely winterized. Now we simply wait for the chill to pass until it can again bloom.

When he was alive, and I a younger man, Duke Edmund asked me in for a quiet evening. During that evening we shared our difficulties in keeping our children safe.

Nothing has changed now that they are adults - except that now I cannot tell them to get out of the tree or to stop making a target of themselves. They are their own people.

Eddard has been working quite diligently where he thinks I cannot see it for Duskshire's improvement. I think I will increase his clothing stipend again. He has more than earned it.

Relationship Note on Amari

I am quite pleased with the progress of my squire, Lady Amari Keaton. She has proven her title, The White Heart of Keaton, many times over. Her actions do her justice and her heart is in the right place.

It is a pleasure to be a part of her journey towards full self mastery.

I never fought by Duke Arn's side. By all accounts he was a unique man, given to little speech, and at that, rough speech.

Prince Caius and I were compatriots when the Slaver attacked the Lodge. He was stalwart and knew when to act and when to pull back in the face of overwhelming force. I only wish that he had not spent his luck with us, but would be home now.

I am quite proud of my Nephew, Eddard. He has volunteered to spend time each afternoon in either the beet garden or the stables. His father will be quite happy when I write to tell him that he has learned responsibility here in Arx.

My nephew Eddard is back and he has gifted me with a small tree. He is an odd man, but I find I am fond of having him back. The house was a bit too quiet otherwise.

My bear-child, Lady Jael Laurent, is married. I am amazed at the time that has passed and the beautiful, strong, and valiant woman she has grown into.

Perhaps this is where I will stop, as the scholar has just offered me the use of a handkerchief.

There is nothing at all wrong with my eyes.

I have written to Marquessa Regina Keaton to confirm this.

I received word from my father this morning that I have been expecting for several years, but nevertheless hoped would never come.

My grandfather has passed back to the Wheel.

My words will mark me as what I am, new to the nobility, with the callouses of my more common heritage clinging to me. That said, I feel it nonetheless honorable to speak for a moment of this man who I respected and loved.

Jethro, for whom my youngest brother Jethro was named, was a man without peer. He worked the lands which Clement was given oversight over for years. He never sought for his own promotion, but instead had a steadfast vision that saw us through lean years and on to prosperity. He was a man who saw the simple honor in a good days work, and worked to instill this in each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

My grandfather was a man who spoke his mind. When Duke Edmund knighted me he was upset. In his eyes I was abandoning the family. Moreover I was forsaking what I had learned as a beekeeper and woodsman to give myself over to a life of violence. He never trusted the progressive nature of Arx itself, though there is no one who could doubt his loyalty to the compact.

Despite his displeasure at my choices, I never felt divorced from my family. I knew that I could return at any point to open arms - and a shovel pressed into my hands. After the death of my first wife it was my grandfather who told the family to give me time, and also made sure I had time to be alone to morn. In all of his letters he asked about Adalyn's health though I do fear I never did tell him that when she came to Arx she chose to join a mercenary group. His heart was already weak.

May he rest well, and never be forgotten.

Relationship Note on Adalyn

Weeks ago I went with Lady Jael, Lord Kedehern, and Lady Shae to try to round up some of the wild horses that live within Duskshire.

They were a wild bunch, but there was one in particular that caught my eye. (And threw me from his back, I would do him no honor to not mention this fact.) He was no horse though, but a long eared mule that strongly favored his horse ancestor. He was tall and proud as any amount, and smart to boot in knocking me off his back.

This inspired a desire to perhaps tame more of this herd, or breed and tame the younger ones to begin a line of mules.

"But Papa," my daughter Adalyn said, "You can't breed a line of mules!" Of which she is right. However, with the right progenitors I think we could make a solid breeding stock in mules. Horses aren't as sturdy, and donkeys can be dull.

A steady mule however? Very solid.

Now I just need to catch the rest of that herd.

Also, no, the will eat from FIELDS. My daughter lives under the threat of her life if she should let one of them into my garden.

Eddard too. Now that I think of it.
