I've been hard at work on my charitable project in the shop. It's going rather well so far! I hope everything pans out for the absolute best.

I had a fairly annoying cold for the past few days, but I'm back, ready, and raring to take on a few of my outstanding commissions.

I've learned just about all I can about tailoring and woodworking without achieving mastery. Gone are the days of tearing wool to shreds at the Algair pasture. I can work with aeterna and umbra now, and make any kind of furniture I want.

What should I learn next? I find leatherworking intriguing and highly in demand. It's also applicable to my other crafts enough that it's worth pursuing as an addition to them.

I have a personal project to work on regarding my new outfit plans, plenty of commissions to work on one at a time, and new things to learn. I'm ready for everything that entails.

The offers I've gotten for help with my project have truly been heartening. I will endeavor to continue to use my increasing wealth to help those in need.

The auction went well. I had hoped for more people to show up so I could reveal my winter plans to them, but this will have to do. Selling the lots was more important than attracting a giant crowd, and I accomplished that, at least. If people want to help, they'll help. I'm content with doing whatever I'm able to do.

Meeting Verity made me realize something. After the auction is done and dusted with, I have to make a new outfit for myself sometime. I create seasilk finery for others and I wear drab wool and linen. It does not say much for my work, unfortunately. Even though I think my work is very good.

I've put my newest creations up for auction, and I'm hoping it all turns out for the best! If I make a great deal of silver out of it, I could have plenty to expand the business and make greater things, and have plenty left over to give to charity, too.

I hear so much about all these new babies coming about. Maybe I should start working on baby clothes! Cotton is easy to wash.

The nobility here are fascinating. I met perhaps one or two nobles before I came to Arx. I've met well over a dozen since arriving here. And they are fascinating. Invariably kind to some degree. Perhaps a little, er, eccentric? But I can at least relate there.

Relationship Note on Jonathan

I was drawing up designs for a wedding gown, minding my own business, when suddenly I hear that Jonathan is getting married?! Or has gotten married?! That's surprising! Good for him!

Although I guess that offer for his family's old wedding rings is off the table. That's fine! I'll have a new pair made when the time comes.

It must really be the season for marriage like Princess Sabella says.

To some, familial obligations are just that: an obligation. Something to be expected rather than cherished. But when you grow up in a large family like the Algairs, you realize that the attention of your individual family members can only be spread so thinly. It's not their fault, really. It's just that attention is a finite resource. I try to show my parents that I appreciate them by sending silver and good news, but their responses leave me with the feeling that they wish their children had stayed around to be shepherds like them. My siblings are off on their own adventures, but perhaps one day they will find me at my shop. It's got my name on it, after all.

I'm grateful for all the commissions on my plate, but I'm going to have to slow them down for now if I want to finish my autumn line of clothes and furniture. So I'll finish what I've already taken on and then redouble my efforts on getting my autumn clothes done by October. And maybe learn to fashion aeterna by winter time for the next season's line?! We'll see!

Jobs are coming in so quickly that I might have to hire an assistant or three to handle some of the more mundane duties around the shop. Ashes, as good of a mouser as she is, unfortunately cannot sweep the floor or run to the city center to buy cloth. - Wait, maybe I can train her to? - No, probably not.

Relationship Note on Fairen

Marquis Fairen Leary has taken me as his protege, and has put a great deal of trust in me by doing so. He has agreed to support my efforts to expand my horizons as an artisan, and I will help him in turn. I have also joined his Household. In time, I will give back to his House what he has given to me so far.

Business is still good, and my living quarters are more livable now that I've replaced the old furniture. I've met a few good people too, from all walks of life. I'm really settling into this city nicely.

The patron fair is coming up today. I plan on attending.

Just about everyone I've met in this city so far has been... nice. It's odd, given the misconceptions my parents put in my head before I trekked over this way. I've written to them, and they wrote back, saying they're happy for me and my newfound success. I hope I can keep my momentum going. My skills as both a clothier and a woodworker are in high demand, and I intend to improve those skills before focusing on other things. I think that will give me the income I need to pursue the knowledge I crave. Finding a patron would also be quite nice, considering the doors that would open.

Oh, and I got a cat! The old building I rented has mice, and Ashes (the cat's name) is a mouser. She won't eat the dirty things, though. Just leaves them by my workbench and ducks her head for scratches, which I happily give. If only I could pay an actual person-assistant in scratches. Hmm.

The business is going... surprisingly well! I've gotten commissions from a bunch of different people, and business is generally pretty steady. I think I can make a regular income out of this as I teach myself my crafts. I'm going to focus a bit on improving my woodworking skills as well as my talents as a clothier as these seem to be very popular. But as to what to specialize in... who knows? I have the rest of my life to decide that. For now, I must learn!

I took Joscelin's generous investment in me and found an old and dilapidated building on Merchant Road that wasn't being used for anything. It seemed to have been used by either a group of artisans with various specialties, or a single artisan with multiple interests, as the building contained a small workshop with a forge, a woodworking bench, a loom, a tanning rack, and other handy things.

So naturally, I put a significant down payment on the place and arranged for the shop to open in a few days' time. I've been doing most of the work getting things open, moving around shelves and tables, and making new ones. And, fortunately, there's a loft on the second floor I can sleep in. It's called Kaine's Captivating Crafts. I'm a sucker for alliteration, and I'll work on a cheeky sign.

My arrival in Arx has been a great boon thus far. I spoke with Guildmaster Joscelin Arterius, the leader of the Crafter's Guild. After speaking with her about my burgeoning talents as an artisan, as well as my desire to learn, improve, and eventually own a shop, she kindly provided me with a generous loan that will help allow me to turn my dreams into a reality. I won't let her, or the Crafter's Guild, down. I will learn, improve, and start a business that will allow me to pay the Crafter's Guild back for their kindness. The days of being a farmer and shepherd are becoming increasingly distant. I will make my family proud.
