Up until very recently if you asked me how I'd make friends with a dragon, I don't think I'd have that many good ideas to offer.

Now I'd say a mutual appreciation for heights, going fast, and flying upside down goes a long way!

You know, I was finally going to sit down and write about what a relief it was to make it through the battle at Harrow Hall and finally defeat the Herald of Skald's dark reflection and then right before I do I hear about King Calithex proclaiming Dear The Compact I'm leaving the continent and good luck with the upcoming wars.

That's not ominous or anything!

My daughter's going to be old enough to write her own journals soon. That's definitely something that doesn't alarm me in the slightest!

Why should I believe you're going to pay out 75,000 silver when you can't even afford to give away one left boot?

It's suspicious, is what it is.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting to work on this social competition of Duchess Belladonna's. It seems like a great way to meet new people and make some connections! Or just to spend some time with my favorite armorsmith.

That reminds me, I need to harass my lawyer cousin to join our team. We have room for a fifth! And it involves writing things down, probably neatly. She'd be perfect.

Saw Princess Reese and High Lord Victus slug it out in their Rite of Gloria. Unfortunately for me, I was late to it, and missed most of the beginning and middle even. From all accounts it was a pretty severe and grueling match, back and forth until Victus got the last hardest hit in that had Reese submit.

I know from experience Princess Reese is a really tough out, so now I know I don't want to have to slug it out with High Lord Victus without a real good reason. Although I think I kinda knew that already anyway.

It's nice to see the new Shrine of the Queen of Endings officially dedicated. (Or dead-icated, ha ha.) Apparently I'm not the only one glad to see it opened; I brought Octohopper and I think she's decided to spin a web and live there. I'll be a bit sad to see her go, although honestly it's probably a better place for a spider to live than the Whisper House. Plus it's not too far away from the Shrine of the First Choice, so it'll be easy to stop in and visit her there.

Once, you know, I find her. I mean, she's big for a spider but the Shrine isn't exactly tiny, either! I tend to assume nobody is really reading my journals but just in case, if you're by the shrine and you spot a spiderweb with a prismatic jumping spider in it, if you can send me a messenger with their approximate location in the shrine that would be very much appreciated.

Anoooooother thing I went to this week was the Redrain/Valardin wedding reception of Princess Marian and Prince Fergus. Would you believe I learned some things there too? It wasn't just the names of new people, although I always do enjoy those. It was also interesting factoids!

For instance, I'm way better at traditional Redrain dancing than Larissa! Maybe if she let me eat more cookies she'd be good at it too. I think these two things are HIGHLY CORRELATED.

Another thing I went to this week was the tea party at the Palace hosted by Lady Symonesse, the King's betrothed. I mostly went for the cookies and the company, but I even managed to learn some things here too!

For instance, by certain measures I'm probably older than Aureth, and apparently if I don't moderate my cookie intake around Larissa she will cut me off.

The Regent held an open throne discussion at the Assembly of Peers and it was certainly interesting to attend. I learn a lot by going to these kinds of things, even apart from the obvious stuff like "I'd really never want to be the Regent".

For instance, elves get to skip being children!

That is wildly unfair.

The King has spoken!

And now we're going to have an elf as Queen!

Well, if marrying an elf was good enough for Alarice the Great, then it's good enough for everybody.

I've been feeling more and more confident I made the right choice to join the discipleship. Spending time at the Shrine has been helpful to both the people I've talked to and myself as well. All the leaf-sweeping isn't entirely helping my opinion about autumn, though. I've heard it's good horse riding weather, at least.

Had the pleasure to witness Sir Roland begin his tenure as the Sword of Sanctum today. He'll do the position quite proud. I have to say it was a little bit concerning to me just how far Princess Marian fought before yielding, but I suppose even Oathlanders can be very competitive. Or maybe that's just the natural consequence of being used to having Princess Sophie around to see to injuries? Either way, it seems everybody will be fine in the end, so that's a relief.

Larissa showed me around 'The Holy Knights of Solace Home For Wayward Souls And Temporary Shelter' (in case you forgot what the non-tongue-in-cheek name for it was) today to check out the results of some of the fundraising drives the House has been putting on in the last several months. It's great to see all the potential we talk about during these events become actual, tangible construction you can walk inside and see and touch.

Hopefully from here on out things at the orphanage will only continue to get better.

For the record, I actually am looking forward to gallivanting around the bay on some sort of semi-inadvisable fishing/drinking trip with everyone else you've promised a boat ride to at Some Future Point.

Maybe now that you're done funding bird sanctuaries you can get to that next!

I'm very pleased to record that the speculative navy first imagined by Dame Leta and I in the training center nearly a year ago finally had its first shakedown voyage and the results, while not extremely victorious, were nonetheless quite promising!

I think that the next time the opportunity arises we shall perform all the better for this experience, hopefully with a fully crewed vessel.

Relationship Note on Eithne

A PARTIAL LIST OF THINGS THAT ARE COMPLETELY UNFAIR ABOUT EITHNE THORNBURN

* Being the best armorer in Arx (alaricite!!!)

* Having a forge with a better selection of whiskey than ('Murder of Crows' is scribbled out) some of the city's taverns

* That time I raced you into the store and you were fast and agile enough to slip past me even though I was pretty sure I was blocking the entire doorway

* How effortlessly you get my attention

We won the day, and it is as much a relief as a triumph. So much had been put into the effort of making our stand, and despite all that from the after action reports I've read it was on the precipice of disaster for us at several critical points before the valiant forces of the Compact were able to rally each time. Even in victory, the losses and destruction are staggering.

I was able to spring a few of our ambushes on the Bringer forces headed to the graveyard, but the enemy's choice to commit the primary assault by small craft in raiding parties of handfuls at a time served to bypass most of them. And so it was that we quickly consolidated amidst the army of the dead defending the Queen's catacombs against seemingly unending waves of dominated Shavs, Bringers of all variety, and even a Fomorian or two making their landings.

I don't know how to properly describe the experience of this battle, it still seems more than a little unreal to me. It was constant motion, fatiguing physically and mentally. The attackers spoke not at all; the dead rarely had much to say beyond going into a mild chattering panic when one Shav made it through to hit Aureth with his sword. (I also don't know how to properly describe what it's like to see an animated sword-wielding skeleton panic.) The rest of us, the Knights of Solace and resident defenders of the Boroughs, scattered as they were, every shout and wail, every cry of triumph and death, they were all too clearly heard above the constant clatter of wood and steel. The Thraw Ward roared with destruction; the assault became more and more pressured. And then, as if the army arrayed against us were marionettes with their strings cut, the attacks against us ceased.

I went to the shrines to pray, and to give thanks. What else is there to do, seeing the unreal minions of a goddess rise up in defense of the world?
