Relationship Note on Sina

Let those who wield poisoned blades trip down a steep flight of stairs, into a mildly deep ravine, and land with the pointed end buried in their gut, while crows wait, though not long enough, for them to die of it, so they can feed.

You deserved better than this.

Relationship Note on Orazio

Given recent events, I had a glance back over my journals throughout the years, looking to see if I'd ever written anything specifically about Dominus Orazio. What I found was a limerick so painful that I'll never be rid of the scar, so I can only hope that the Dominus (then-Legate) never had the ill fortune to read it. I'm not sure why he'd have made the effort, but even so, my profuse, too late, and never-ending apologies to you, Dominus.

From all accounts, you were a fine, decent man. I'll say this; it's never a good position to be in, to be the one responsible for the murder of a fine, decent man, particularly one with so many dedicated friends and acquaintances, many of them being fine, decent, and well armed. Perhaps your murderers shouldn't have claimed responsibility quite so loudly. It suggests that not only are they worthless cowards, but also deeply, deeply stupid.

Rest well. Your murderers certainly won't.

Relationship Note on Piccola

War philosophy is something I occasionally find interesting, if only out of idle curiosity. There are a great many things that I would argue about in your journals, all of them pedantic, unimportant, and almost certainly wrong. I feel confident in saying, however, that ideas are every bit as important when it comes to war as physical weapons, and even more important when it comes to keeping whatever such wars gain. Freedom is an idea as well as an ideal, a path as well as a desired destination.

Tyrants do not respect a great many things beyond physical power. It is something that tends to lead to their downfall.

It is always a little frustrating to be working from outdated information. Entirely my own doing, my line of work has taken me away from Arx quite often, particularly in the past year or so. And, of course, there's only so much any one man can focus on at a time, which may be the actual issue. It's difficult to choose what to look into, when I'm not investigating a topic at the request of someone else.

Back again. It's uncanny that every time I return to Arx, some new disaster seems to have sprung up in my absence, and often more than one. That isn't some sort of suggestion that the two are linked, of course, merely an observation of just how many disasters happen to occur in this city, considering how frequently work takes me away.

Arx, I left you alone for five minutes, five minutes! And look what you have got yourself into.

(Okay, it was decidedly longer than five minutes, but even so, the point stands.)

Sir Bayweather, per a promise I made to someone, I mean to publicly inform you that someone is looking for you. Do let me know via messenger when you've found the person in question, or the person in question has found you.

Relationship Note on Brogan

I feel I should create a poem in your honor. I just won ten thousand silver to do it with, and I can only assume that's inducement for a sequel.

Brogan rhymes with slogan, so what would Brogan's slogan be?

... I may have started drinking early upon hearing of your return. I don't think you'll begrudge me that.

Wait, I wrote something? Here I was hoping for utter anonymity. I really did my best to make it anonymous.

My thanks to the subjects of my doggerel for providing such unwitting and yet, I hope, willing targets. I will gladly publish a companion volume; I only await the inspiration to present itself.

It will certainly be a LOSS, sir. For whom will wait to be seen.

And Master Voss, please. Voss by itself is a dog's name. He's quite a fine dog, but nevertheless.

I don't know about you, but if I said 'all in the Lyceum are shifty snakes,' I surely wouldn't expect to get invited to their parties.

The same might apply elsewhere. Perhaps the reason one is unaware of a certain thing may be related to one's attitude about the possessor of such a thing. But then again, what do I know? I'm just a Seeker of the Society of Explorers, and therein handily disprove a purported point.

A slightly belated followup (apologies as I am slightly under the weather, hence the day or two's delay on the Commoners' Bulletin, which I know by your own words you enjoy), and a question to which I'd like your answer:

Is trying to limit stupidity in its own way stupidity, do you think? Or is the person who observes stupidity and does nothing the greater fool? I feel like I spend my days offering solid advice which goes unheeded for a variety of reasons, and I've occasionally thought I was wasting my time on various matters. But when I am called to account at the end of my days, there will be none who can say I didn't act where warranted. Ever.

Relationship Note on Rinel

Grief goes on exactly as long as you let it, like standing under a waterfall at the edge of a very deep pool. Don't let it swallow you whole. There's work to be done, and productivity is the antithesis of drowning in sorrow. The time to climb out of the water will come sooner rather than later, and there's nothing that stops the chill of that water like the light of a worthy cause.

Lady Monique Greenmarch asks, "What would you like to know about?"

I'll send a list, once I'm finished with my book for the book contest. It's really quite spectacular, although I'm afraid it might not be as anonymous as she might hope.
