But why was it so -sticky-?

There are times where I, discovering a gap in my understanding of something or other, have sought out help from experts or enthusiasts to fill the hole. Once in a while, the need to ask has been embarrassing. And while I've never oversold my ignorance on a topic, I've felt myself quite clever in approaching obliquely so as to minimize the discomfort of exposure.

Having had the honor of being the one with answers, I'd just like to give heartfelt thanks to past mentors who were kind enough not to laugh or call me out while being subjected to my aggressively inept attempts at subterfuge.

After drowning (happily) in dyes and Highhill cotton for weeks, I'm relieved to have the results filling the shop displays with color again. It's more summery than I meant it to be, but I can't be the only one already impatient to return to the beaches.

I did enjoy painting those hundreds of wisteria flowers for the estate landscape. Maybe a few outfits in the light purples?

Do something that scares you, they said. Terrible advice.

We tried something new this week in the writing workshop. The group was lined up at random and then they took turns adding one new line to a single page - building from each other's sentences to craft a story together. No weeks of drafting and polishing before sharing aloud, just a few minutes to read, write, and pass the quill to the next author.

The finished piece was interesting, to put it politely. We had some laughs over the very short career of our confused and confusing protagonist, and everyone seems to be looking forward to writing their own sequels to share at the next meet.

The discussion afterwards focused on word choice and writing an idea through to its end, even if it's likely to be scrapped. But the lesson I'm taking home is that while bold, dramatic or funny additions are memorable, real progress is made by supporting the work of those around you, not trying to stand out.

Also, "Daughterson Sondaughter" is a terribly ridiculous name.

I'm pleased with how the soft reopening went. As expected, the available books were off the shelves almost immediately and I'm back to working out a more equitable approach to selling the next batch, whenever they might come in. Perks earned or inherited aside, this venture is giving me a greater respect for the work that goes into building up a noteworthy personal library. I'm grateful to those who opt to share that wealth with the public.

It shouldn't take once-in-a-lifetime events to scare up visits from family. I am overdue for a trip home.

Patronsday came and went with its usual flair, though my supplemental art walk wasn't as long as I had hoped it would be. I understand why the Gallery of Jayus spends all year planning for it, now, so I'll be better prepared next time!

I am rarely puzzled, flattered and humbled at the same time. I can say with certainty that this is the first time it has happened because a piece of furniture.

Whiskey is still my favorite drink, but I have a new love for a good cup of coffee - particularly when it is paired with a short stack of beautifully-written whites to read. I may be just a little in love with today's poets, many whom I have not met. Yet.

I have waxed poetic in the past (NOT ranted, thank you very much) about the tragedy of beautiful artwork displayed behind locked doors, never to be appreciated as widely as it should. As satisfying as it can be to indulge in these laments, it is equally if not more fulfilling to take action.

I am pleased to be working with the Jayus Gallery of Art this Patronsday to showcase existing art, brought out of great halls and boudoirs to share their brilliance with a wider audience if only for a limited time.

Heartfelt congratulations to Softest Whisper Cesare, fellow Disciple of Jayus, for an outstanding Midwinter Celebration event hosted at the shrine. The results of the auction aren't in yet but I wanted my praise for him to stand separate from what I'm sure will be many generous winning bids. (But, sincerely, many thanks to contributors and bidders alike.)

Bravo!

Between this, that and the other thing, I haven't had time to put in words the joy and supreme satisfaction I've felt being involved in the building of a shrine to Jayus in the new Artshall Arts and Culture District. From the first conversations with Lady Mabelle Laurent, to the laying of the cornerstone, to the collection of prayers at the Midsummer Night event for infusing into the shrine's eventual blessing ceremony, it has been an absolute delight to watch something beautiful grow, changed by every hand that touches it. I've come to think of the whole district as my "Artshall neighbors." I wonder if I'll have enough time to pull together one last welcome gift for them, here at home?

Whether you're fortunate enough to have known about Samira Culler for a while or you're among those only newly introduced to her talent, I'm so pleased for you! I'd love to see which pieces you've purchased from her. Come show me? I'll buy you a drink to celebrate your good taste.

The Celestial Ball at Domus Igniseri was beautiful, from the refreshments to the guests to every twinkling detail in the decor. Brava, Marquessa! And applause for everyone who helped to make the night shine so bright.

I am honored to serve the Crafters Guild as its newest Guildmaster, alongside Assistant Guildmasters Audgrim and Samira, and I am so very grateful to everyone who has reached out to offer congratulations and support. I've stuck all the notes in amongst the pages of a new ledger, to remind me at random of these remarkable moments of kindness.

Oh, such beautiful things we build when we work together. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I never met you.

I don't know what you loved or hated, what shaped you in the past or what you sought for your future. I don't know your story, but I know you helped write the way forward for the Compact with your own blood. So I will find your name on the rosters, and I will speak it aloud - to honor you as one of so very many who died, but still, uniquely, you.

On Working With Deeplight Coral, written for the Deeplight Coral Showcase

While this tenderfoot traveler cannot in good conscience recommend a visit during cold months, those who inexplicably find frigid dark seas and ruthless winds appealing may actually enjoy the voyage from Arx to the Isles of the East Wind. For my part, I can only state that there's a beauty to be found in the contrast between the harsh environment and the warmth of hospitality in the people who choose to live there.

I found inspiration in that warmth - a sparkling, bright spot amidst all the cold and dark, perfectly represented in the colorful, glittery coral the fishermen pull up from the depths in their nets. This unique material, this "living stone" is thought to be blessed by the Goddess, formed from the salt of her tears and the red of her blood.

They are less complimentary when it comes to the recent discovery of a black variety, considering it proof of coming blight; the coral itself carries no disease though, and is as stunning a medium to work with as its white, red and pink cousins, with all the dazzle encountered in faceted gems, whether or not it's shaped from the rough.
