I made my return to Arx a few nights back. My armor was in need of repair, my blade worn from hacking at brush. It was an interesting journey and a chance to clear my thoughts. I did not expect to return to a rash of marriage bans and courtship rituals.

My own marriage, short as it was, was one of political alliance. I was plucked from Seliki and sent to the cold north. I was certain I would hate Giant's Reach and that my wife would be a word like duty. She would be no different than 'muck the stables' or 'polish a blade'. Instead, in that frail beauty - I found purpose. She took the small spark of adventure that I had and fanned it into a full blaze of exploration. It was because of her that I am how I am now.

It is because of her that my heart aches now. Her death was sudden and five years on, I had thought myself recovered. Then I attempted to give myself to another. To dare to attempt a match for love. That, apparently, was not the way. I have spent the last few days bringing closure to that chapter. Now, returned. Settled. Armor repaired, sword sharpened and arrows prepared, I am ready to scribe the first page of a new chapter.

I wish those entering into marriage the most heartfelt of hopes that they learn the lessons that I did in one short year of my own marriage before it ended in death. Or at least that it is better that 'mucking the stables'.

Relationship Note on Sunaia

I have felt things in your presence that I have not felt in some time, as well, and wish you the same blessing that you wish upon me.

Also, I have been extremely careful not to hurt the spiders while sweeping the Shrine of the Queen of Endings, and I will thank you not to imply otherwise.

As for you, dust whirlwind, your sweeping abilities are truly abominable and the entire Compact must be warned.

Relationship Note on Josephine

Last night I witnessed a woman, elderly and frail, take into herself the power of a terrible being and bind it so it might be defeated. A commoner merchant, the leader of the crafters, who possessed such courage and strength ... her name was Josephine Arcuri, and though she perished, I believe she shall live on in legends for ages.

The Templar and The Inquisitor, A Short Fable

Once upon a time, peaceful city-dwellers emerged from the walls to mingle among those familiar with the wilds, a sociable occasion pledged in worship of Petrichor, a time of fun and fellowship in sowing the earth. When such beauty and goodness assembles, what can the enemy do but attack? The bitter forces of human politicking, armed and mounted, violent and cruel without regard to decency and kindness... they came charging to the fields: a brutal assault on life and liberty.

Those assembled rose to meet foul foe's charge with the enthusiasm of right against wrong, and the enemy was soundly defeated. Some were cut down, wounded too badly to continue, while others ran, shot in their arsecheeks, and others... well, they surrendered, for many of the good and peaceful city-dwellers had wonderful words of truth in their arsenal.

One of those who surrendered was the leader of the enemy force. And into her throat twisted the blade of an overzealous Templar, one of the heroes of our fable. In her glee to embody Gloria's valor, she sullied her honor and her blade with the blood of a surrendered opponent. They had broken the holy peace of sanctuary, and she would afford them no mercy.

She was called out by her brighter fellows, a brave healer, a grumpy old man with scathing wit, and the others gathered who saw the righteous sun become a tyrant for a day. As it is in summer's heat.

The sad failure of a Templar understood her mistake. She keened with tears and slipped away.

Among those who remained was an Inquisitor, who commanded confessors with sharp efficiency to gather those injured among the foe for questioning. What particularly terrible strain of human politicking had caused the hubbub that day? She planned to find out, and to do so with ruthless speed.

Behind the Inquisitor, covered by a cloak, lay the duchess whom she had tried to protect. This Duchess was injured very badly, and could not stand or move, but the Inquisitor remained active with confidence and verve despite her failure. She finished her work without a single dash of angst, and brought her wounded charge and her lordly date back to the safety of the walls.

The moral of this fable is one I understand perhaps better than most. I have made both the first and second mistakes in the past.

The first mistake, no matter how shattering. Crushing! RUINING. Is the first mistake. A second mistake can easily be made on the heels of the first, and that is defeat in the face of one's personal failure. The second mistake can be even more shattering, because it often prevents necessary reparations. It can stymie the right that one might do after the wrong.

Mistakes must be acknowledged, and learned from, but they cannot be allowed to defeat us.

I met a Fascinating and Friendly adventurer recently who inspired the Fine idea of Finding a way to Nefer'khat, together with a Fighter of Fomorians and anyone else intrigued by this Fantastic Fellowship.

Are there any experts on Nefer'khat in the city? I greatly desire to make their acquaintance.

Relationship Note on Dianna

I don't believe it is possible for a greater caliber of friend to exist... than the caliber of friend that is Dianna Godsworn.

I was napping at the field of petals at the Lodge when I also had this vision that people speak of in the journals, and I must admit it gave me an unpleasant shiver the like of which I have not felt in some time, even in that peaceable place. If any wish to discuss the matter, I would be most willing. Whence did these dreams come, and why? Should I worry whenever I sight a crow?

Relationship Note on Anisha

This Whisper is relentless, yet kind and full of graceful understanding. Although she did confuse me for somebody else at first, it's very easy to mix up us amazingly handsome adventurer-explorer types. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing her and hearing her nightingale again, under future cloudless night skies. Any tedium could be broken by her presence.

Relationship Note on Brigida

I was invited to join the Lodge of Petrichor by Blessed Brigida. She's tough woman, but kind and good once you get past the first scoldings and menacing taps from her staff.

Though I've only been in Arx a week now, it's beginning to feel like a place to call my second home. The Lodge grounds are truly beautiful. Now to remember to give thanks to Petrichor for any successful hunt!

Relationship Note on Maja

It's the most contact I've had with people in many months, Maja. I both have to thank you for the generosity given and..the patience you displayed. Don't go /too/ harshly on Aila. I could have put a stop to it at any time, but she's a treasure. You let me know if she finds a pirate husband on the docks soon and if not, I'll be on the hunt for one.

Hopefully we can see each other again soon, Maja. I'll be in a better frame of mind this time around. Promise.
