Strongtall and Half-Mast have been out of Arx for a handful of weeks now, having rode out for more northern parts to wave a torch or two around at a bit of a mystery that has been chewing on my boot for a year and more. Half ain't exactly known for being loud but somehow it's a lot quieter still with him gone and I find I laugh about half as much without Strong's jokes even if they ain't funny.

You get used to having folks around, everything you like about 'em and the things you don't realize you like until they're gone. I don't know where I am going with this. I expected to have the both of 'em back before winter set in and the word what came today has it so that ain't so. I guess I worry, that's all. Then again, it ain't like the pair of 'em have never been through a northern winter.

I am lucky to have the loyalties of the folks I keep it with.

I could do without all the heat and the humidity, seems endless don't it? Worse even when you are sitting around on your rear in Arx and not taking in the sound of the sea breeze and billowing sails, or trekking around beneath the canopy of a forest so old only the smallest shafts of sunlight manage to lance through and light up the path. When there's a path at all. I know this itch, and these endless hot days? They are the best for giving in to it.

A while back I made note that Houndmouth'd found his way back to Arx, and I am real glad now to say that he has taken a break from the singing to start spilling ink across pages once again.

I'd never discourage a soul from doing whatever it is they love, but he was always a better writer than he was a singer. They don't call him Houndmouth the Bard for nothing, now.

No offense to Sir Floppington or any of them fine Keaton folk's nice animals.

It might be that seeing him get back to the good work like that will put some fire beneath Strongtall and Half-Mast even. Half didn't even count none of his silver from our last haul, I think he is feeling a little under the weather as of late.

Well. A bet is a bet. I reckon if a person gets sour-like over losing, they ought to not be the sort making them in the first place.

This'll be interesting, if it's anything.

There is something about the Autumn that puts me right in the mood to do some letter writing. I expect I better stoke up a fire in the hearth tonight and get some ink on more things than I'd like.

I went to the coziest poetry reading this week, put on by scholar Helena Redrain. A lot of funny folks there, made for a good time when everyone seemed to be feeling so down and the like. Princess Elgana asked me to escort her there, and only one guard tried to stop us to make sure I wasn't someone tryin' to pester her for spare coppers. That's a fair night, to me! The whole thing really did a lot to lift folks spirits up a bit, I figure.

Relationship Note on Oswyn

You know, I had a notion that the good Scholar Oswyn was going to get eaten by something while we was forging paths into white places. But I'll tell you what, the man really carried on even with the huffing and the puffing, right on through when the cold started to choke. It's so cold up that way you'd swear you'd stopped existing for want of having anything you can feel. He's alright in my book, and while I was indifferent to him getting eaten by local wildlife at first, now I think that'd be a real shame.

I am real glad to hear that Houndmouth is back in Arx, come along after word got around to him that I'd made it back myself. He never was much of a singer, as you might imagine from his name, but he could sure write some pretty words and that's why we used to employ him as a bard. I heard he lit out for Ischia after the last time we parted ways, and I heard it got about a hair more interesting than he'd have liked, but knowing that man I'm sure he put all the stories down in a book somewhere.

I figure it's as fine a time as ever for him to come crawling out of the woods, seeing as how I might have a couple of things in the works, soon.

A lot of folks snicker when I call Half-Mast by his nickname, but it really is just on account of how I found the man chased half-up a mast when I pulled him off that sinking ship. We don't always see eye-to-eye, but he has taught me a lot about leadership, especially as concerning trying to lead someone who is a whole lot smarter than you are. I'd be lost without him, some days. And he wouldn't be able to reach the high shelves. Or the medium ones. So we make a fine team, really.

When I first got back to Arx, I shook some silver knights around and banged on some doors, but I didn't managed to hunt down the other men and women who used to work with me. Some of them ain't in Arx any longer, and two of them have passed on. An explorer's life can get snapped up just like that, sometimes. Adventuring is a merciless pursuit. I was real happy, yesterday, to get a letter from Too Tall, who is looking to unretire himself and sign back on with the crew. Given the time, I might even get the rest of them.

Relationship Note on Violet

As fine an archer as I've ever seen. Not a bad teacher, either. Any thick-headed son of a rock can fire a crossbow, but a regular bow takes a bit of finesse. She got my stance worked out real nice-like. Grouping, that's what it's about. Grouping. I won't forget.
