Relationship Note on Bree

A fellow Knight of Solace and veritable ray of sunshine. She's a very positive woman. I, of course, can appreciate siblings that decide to swear themselves to the Faith and Gild and the Silver Order so we certainly share that in common. It's important to build camaraderie within the Order and she certainly makes that easy.

I return from my religious pilgrimage changed, somehow, for the better. As my thoughts have been turned inward, toward the gods -- myself -- other people. I, who consider that I am one possessed of an iron will -- someone who doesn't easily yield to those subjects to which I am most passionate and driven. A passion that's gotten me into more than one situation in which I should have taken pause and planned instead of taking that leap into action. One that should have. Now, I need to consider how I take that should and turn it into will. What will I do to make up for those rash decisions made. I cannot say that I won't do such things again -- my feet are clay, afterall. Imperfect.

However, I will temper my passions. I will take that iron and temper it to steel.

Something stronger, sharper, and fine-edged.

Following some of the debates that have arose in the wake of my talk on Civilization, I want to make it clear that while examining an aspect in isolation you can find unsavory courses of actions may embody that aspect. Does that mean those actions are in accordance to the god or the pantheon? It's not that easy. A righteous action needs to take all the aspects into account, Avarice may build Cities but Avarice is not Gild. Gild is the godess of mutual prosperity, making something better not just for yourself but for everyone and sharing your gifts with those who need them and that is the kind of civilization we should aspire to build.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

I've been given to understand that the first liberator Aleksei Morgan has written to clarify that he believes freeing thralls does not have to be an attack on civilization if you do it in good faith and through law and in that case I agree. I don't know why so little work has been done in that direction in our recorded history but it should definitely be something that can be done while limiting the potential consequences. Law is the fidelity between Limerance and Gild, not slavery.

It would be foolish of me to pretend to be an expert in matters of law or the best way to legally give men and women the freedom that they deserve, but I worry when I read statements that the Knight of Brass expects it done in a period of one year because when you're trying to do something fast and on a strict deadline, you're likely to take shortcuts and if this project is to be embarked upon it deserves to be done right.

I wish the first liberator all the best in his efforts, his cause is a worthy one and the difficulty of doing it right means he deserves and requires support from all of those who can offer it.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

The first liberator, Aleksei Morgan mentioned in his latest journals the concept of civilization and it's reflection in the context of the knight of brass and the thralldom of Thrax, expressing the belief that civilization can be maintained even when laws are changed, and that is true. However in his follow up reply to Lady Willow Nightgold he talks about these things as imaginary, and there I think he betrays his lack of respect and understanding of the concept.

In one of the very first and only recently recovered guiding documents the exorcist Palladium wrote to the faith, he tried to explain the precarious balance played between civilization and freedom. It's important that we at all times respect everyone as an individual, treating people like chattel is a dark and evil thing. It's also important that we at all times respect the sanctity of bargains struck, of institutions built. Rule of law is a cornerstone of civilization and if you treat it as imaginary or optional then civilization will break down will all due consequence.

We may not agree with all laws and due process can be painful and achieving the changes we want within the framework of deals made may be much slower then we would like but I assure you that the alternative is so much worse. These deals, arrangements and laws are what allow the compact to exist.

I feel absolutely humbled by the support we Knights of Solace have recieved in the wake of recent events and through our efforts to assimilate the prodical knights brought to us by the initiative of honorable Sir Corban. Each and every one of you are the lights that keeps the darkness at bay.

It saddens me to see so many people, abandonded and crownsworn both do the work of Ruin. But we most not let these forces of chaos convince us that the noble goal of greater connections throughout the compact is somehow foolhardy. I know that we have the strength to build prosperity together as long as we perserve through the troubles in our path. The compact wasn't built easily nor will it grow stronger easily but I firmly believe it's worth it.

As I read some of the recent journals and declarations written by my fellow members of the compact, I feel encouraged at the sense of community and pride displayed therein. Yet as strongly as we should embrace our power to shape our own destiny without needing to be controlled by powers from another continent, we shouldn't reject this opportunity to finally establish connections to these distant lands.

We should treat our guests with all the respect that they deserve and do what we can to build connections that might allow Arx to rise to new heights of prosperity and civilization, bulwarking us against the influences of the Abyss.

In these times it's easy to wonder what we can do to fight corrupting influence and prevent tragedy. I believe if you live a fullfilling life, if you're building a legacy or giving those who need it a helping hand, then you're keeping evil at bay in a very real sense. We all have the capacity to leave the world better.

With the help of some funding from the Order, I started a broker business this week. I believe it's going quite well, a large number of people have approached my representative to trade their assets for silver at a fixed rate saving them the time and effort involved in finding a better deal. I hope with Gilds favor I'll find a good use for the margin.

Felix got done with my new set of armor this week and it turned out just amazing, magic might not exist but he surely has a special touch with metal. I'm feeling very comfortable if I'm ever called to battle in this.

Hearing the unfortunate fate of Sir Daemon and my brothers promotion, I knew I had to make it back to Arx to make sure he's doing alright. Looks like he's still the same lumbering giant as ever and the house hasn't burned down yet which is always a pleasant surprise. I've been told I'm to be fitted for a new armor and that I should replacing my steel sword with something better, I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I woke up this morning and didn't immediately realize that it was my birthday. It wasn't until a good friend of mine asked what I was doing to celebrate that it dawned on me that, yes, I'm twenty-five today. I should probably have a drink.

I return to the city during interesting times. Having been away for the better part of a month, I've heard much has happened and not all of it good.

It'll take a few days to settle into what was once my normal routine. But, rest assured, folks will see my face around the Boroughs very soon.

To my brother and my friends, I'm finally home. Expect a visit from me in the near future.
