Relationship Note on Yvon

You're a little late. Those terms were offered and rejected quite a few months ago now.

And no, it's not a 'we'. For one thing, I'm already the savage, backwards idiot as far as most people are concerned. For another, the funny part is that if Cardia or the Undying Empire also think of me that way, they haven't actually been willing to say so (for reasons entirely unrelated to whether I am, or am not, actually a savage, backwards idiot).

Your analogy is flawed anyway. The two wardogs aren't working together, they're deciding whether or not they want to kill each other. The puppy's choice was to decide whether or not to stand with one of them against the other, or to stand on its own. Rolling over and wetting itself /now/ doesn't improve a thing.

Credit and accolades to the man who marched me into Archlector Vayne?s private office upon his first meeting of me. At the very least I am now a Mirrormask, very much due to his efforts and tenacity.

Relationship Note on Yvon

The world when I was a child, was small. As I grew, it grew around me and with each year that passes, the world expands ever further beyond my ability to imagine. It contains things that I cannot begin to understand, things that fill me with a sense of wonder and astonishment that steals my breath. But there is a dark to every light, a nightmare matched to all the dreams. That is what fills me with purpose, encourages me to be my best, brightest self each and every day. To bring light to those who falter in the shadows, to give warmth and joy where I might, however I might. To be hopeful in the face of woe and danger and darkness so that others might feel the light's warmth and join me there.

There is no shame in being ignorant. Gods know there is too much in the world to claim to know even half of everything, though there are those among us that certainly seem to know more than half. It is what we do with the knowledge we have that matters. I wish you well on your journey.

Some questions are forbidden, even to the Disciples of the Thirteenth. Some proposals and suggestions, some queries, transgress those lines we allow and the freedoms granted within the Faith. There is active debate among the Godsworn even on such matters, where our comfort may lie - but the absolute limit was established in the very act of creation of the Orthodoxy, in the actions of Alor Valardin, that there is a line up to which you can go and no further. Be careful child of the Faith that your necessary work in honouring the Thirteenth and your confidence in his methods does not turn into hubris and over confidence in your own cleverness. There are those far older and far cleverer than any of us who will misuse that for their ends.

A lack of self-knowledge is, perhaps, our greatest problem.

You have inspired me to begin the penning of a new series of discourses.

I still mean what I said as you were departing the other day. You said if I found my time there enjoyable you weren't doing your job. Disagree. The entire reason I first started visiting the shrine of dark reflection was because it was only in examining the holes in my belief systems that I was able to approve my approach, and in learning to do so, and in trying to see things from the perspective of those I have most strongly disagreed with, that my head for leading and understanding those I would work with has been most improved.

Therefore, even if your words and arguments are unpalatable, they still spur on reflection rather than offense if one understands the exercise has little to do with pride for good or ill and is indeed an exercise in thought rather than some personal scolding or admonishment.

Until recently meeting you, I cannot say I had ever met someone who wished to articulate a view that death through starving and famine could in any way possible be a good thing.

Can't say I would want to again either.

The deaths of people due to being unable to put food upon the table, no matter what the cause, is not a position that someone can hold in truth. While spewing controversial views may feel vogue, it is not.

They refer to themselves as 'Abandoned' because the Compact already abandoned them a long, long time ago. The Compact has its own words for them. You refer to parents and children; as fucking obnoxious as this comparison is, since when is putting your child into slavery a sign of good parenting? You are not their parents. They have their own parents. Their own elders.

There is no redemption in thralldom, and the 'value' of kidnapping the Abandoned and making them thralls is that you can have a whole lot of slaves working for you for free. There is no value to /them/. Those ex-Thralls that have thrived since being freed or freeing themselves have thrived in spite of thralldom, not because of it. The ex-thralls that have been murdered because they were /ex/-thralls certainly didn't fucking benefit.

You speak of forces of destruction and those that would overthrow the Compact. Slavery strengthens our enemies, quite literally. Maybe you should pay attention to more gods than the Thirteenth, and you would remember that.

Finally, the objection is not that it's 'unpleasant'. The objection is that it's slavery. 'Kinder' slavery than other forms, sure, but slavery all the same. And there is no such thing as a free people who have been forced to surrender their freedom, be it through chains or the sword.

Relationship Note on Yvon

The Goodman Yvon has once again set pen to paper in what seems to be a pursuit to become the most reviled man in Arx. Herein I shall reply with several counterarguments.

The Goodman Yvon rightly acknowledges that the shav'arvani lack the guidance of both Faith and Crown. Yet he claims that this proves a lack of civilisation. Under such logic, not only are the Dune Kingdoms of Eurus uncivilised, but also the Skykingdom of Cardia, the so-called "Undying Empire" of Jaidairal, and even the Nox'alfar, allies of the Compact and progenitors of Her Majesty the Queen Symonesse. To be clear: Eurus, Cardia, and Jaidairal all practice heathen institutions, for which they will no doubt be held accountable--and Gods willing, it will be soon. But to be detestable is something altogether different than to be uncivilised. There exist shav'arvani holdings which rival any of the houses of the Compact in structure and organisation. Even their heresies are governed by hierarchies not dissimilar to our Faith. It is a foolish thing to underestimate our foes.

And this is where the Goodman makes his greatest mistake. The proper response to an enemy is not to enslave them, in contravention of Lord Skald's principles of freedom. It is either to conquer them, utterly, or to kill them. One may conquer by force of arms or by words, but in any case, it must be absolute. This is what has brought many shav'arvani into the Compact, where they have become civilised. But doing so by means of thralldom is wicked, for it renders us no better than our former masters at Caer'alfar.

That I, a woman who has on many times declared that the choices available to the Abandoned must be limited only to obeisance or death, must make statements in defense of them, is proof of the utter evil of slavery--and of the paucity of the Goodman's logic. I advise that Goodman Yvon take time away from the Shrine of the Thirteenth and reflect upon his thoughts at the Temple of Lord Skald.

Truly spoken like someone who knows not what it is to see themselves shackles by those who feel they know better.

Perhaps you ought to go to Eurus, it seems like they're more suitable company for the likes of you.

Take care that you do not stare so deeply into the Mirror that you begin to gaze with adoration at that which lies beneath it, Goodman Yvon.

And take a lesson from a fool who has come before you--there is a way to question dogma. Open rebellion against our Faith will not accomplish what you seek.
