Relationship Note on Turo

It pains me deeply to have the warrant for your arrest and execution on my desk. Perhaps Darion didn't understand the words you spoke when you knelt before him, but you and I did. A conservative, a traditionalist, and a stubborn old fool... those are all words I'd have called you.But an oathbreaker? I could never have imagined that, Turo.

If you survive your arrest, please do me the courtesy of explaining yourself before you are presented to the sea. There must be a reason for this madness.

Betrayer of oaths. I had high hopes for the future of your house, and Kennex invested a lot to help you and yours try to reach that future. And you've decided to run back to the past.

I'd have to think that standing on one of those ships for its first voyage is the only thing better than seeing them launched.

It's been far too long since I sailed somewhere.

Relationship Note on Turo

I have been pondering this all week since the Count Navegant made his comments.

Aleksei Morgan is one of the most infuriating people I know. He is infuriating in large part because of his incisive wisdom. I don't pretend he is perfect, that would be silly - his failures are public, and they placed him outside of the brotherhood of the Faith and I will always be sorry for that.

But, you can disagree or agree or throw pottery at him as you wish. He is a person. A mortal man.

The thing I think that needs care is whether one takes issue with actions he has taken since he became no longer my Brother, or the actions he took as the Blessed of the First Choice. Those he took with the support of the Faith. And that might be seen as questioning not Aleksei Morgan the man, but the Faith of the Pantheon, the Holy Church of Arvum and representative of the Gods. They were modest, they were kind, and they were just. That nobles of Thrax subsequently took other choices in House Kennex? That is a temporal concern, but one where the Faith was again happy to alleviate suffering and support.

Thrax remain constant and devout friends of the Faith and the Templars in particular. We will always help the faithful where we can.

How is being forced into servitude different from slavery?

If thralldom is so different, why is your High Lord working so hard to eradicate the barbaric practice?

Funny you should write that, considering what sparked the conversation. When someone from Thrax sells Abandoned prisoners to the Eurusi, it's slavery and punishable by (temporary in this case) condemnation by the Faith and being de-nobled. When someone from Thrax sells Abandoned prisoners to the Mourning Isles, it's called Thralldom, and we all dance around and pretend that's meaningfully different because we gave it a different word.

I have been doing quite a bit of work for House Navegant lately, to further their own aspirations, and I am finding it quite fulfilling to be able to do so. Thanks to the Count for the opportunity.

I believe that Count Turo Navegant will make a wonderful admiral for the Grim Fleet. His experience is invaluable, and his loyalty to House Grimhall proven several times over.

Relationship Note on Turo

It is accurate to say that my time among the Mourning Islanders has brought many, many new customs, places, and people into my life.

It is accurate to say that not all of these have been pleasant. Some times I fit in better than others. Some personalities clash. Some suspicions remain strong after scandals have quieted.

Among the many whom I have gotten to know, and even to work with, is the Count Turo Navegant. He has at times been of great help to me, and I hope that at some times I've been of at least moderate usefulness to him. We have been allies of a sort, tentatively. Not friends.

The other night however he earned so /much/ of my respect so quickly and so simply. We'd had a heated discussion that left us both feeling insulted by the other, with the Grim Duke and my husband as witnesses to the back and forth.

When we actually sat to speak though...Count Navegant listened. Respectfully, and thoughtfully. I tried to do the same, and to hear where things had gone sour, to understand them, and to apologize for my role in the unpleasantness. He swiftly did the same, and with sincerity. It was not political machination but genuine communication.

I imagine in the future I will listen carefully whenever Count Navegant speaks...for those who are so honest with themselves, so thoughtful, and so loyal, are worth listening to well.

Thank you, Turo.

I have said this before.

Have an assistant who brings you the journals of the 400 or so most interesting people in the city.

It doesn't take up more than fifteen to twenty minutes of my time every day, really. And if I check on their updates once every couple of hours I barely even notice the time spent.

Relationship Note on Turo

It is Vellichor's charge to us to record our lives within the Whites, that future generations might remember, and that knowledge of what has passed will not be lost. It is up to each of us to decide what we consider important enough to transcribe within these pages. It is all sacred and recorded, and entrusted to our care as Scholars.

I imagine in the future that, in the midst of all the trials and tribulations we may face, some might find a hint of levity and frivolity in our lives as well. We live a colorful existence, and each one of us has a unique perspective. Three people in a room might look at a vase of flowers and see three different things. One might see the vase, the way it is shaped, the patterns on the porcelain; another might see it for the flowers, their beauty, the spray of color; while others might note the play of light and shadow upon both vase and flower. Yet, each one sees the same vase of flowers. Such is it with our lives.

The Whites allow us a glimpse into the lives of each other, into our thoughts, musings, hopes, dreams, troubles, adventures and yes, even the bits of flavor that may seem meaningless to some, but important for others. We share the same Dream, but we envision it differently. We Scholars consider it our sacred obligation to record these things for posterity. There are forces in this world which would squelch our voices. They would see us silenced, and see knowledge lost. We have forgotten things before... important things, and so this is why we record even the tiniest shred of what anyone wishes to share about their lives. That future generations may look back, and see the different facets of our existence.

This is why despite gleefully charging Abyssal monsters, other monsters, and on two separate occasions a Herald, I treat boats with trepidation. If I have my feet below me, I can at least fight. Dying without being able to fight is the worst thing I can think of.

Relationship Note on Turo

Navegant was a blur almost, a thriving community that subsists on so much, and so far north. Though I am sure that Tyde hall is more north, and Stormward even more so.

It was here though, that we had another spell of relaxation even as we enjoyed all the hospitality that there was to offer. I declined to view the turtle processing plants, and instead went with Astrid to visit some of the children that live here. Their education is exemplary. But it was their academy of arts that took my breath away. Seeing the work, temporal in it's own way and different from what the shrine in Arx offers up with it's yearly destruction. t brought about a desire to incorporate them and their work in Thrax with the renovations. Of pieces carefully packed and brought to Thrax. I am of a mind to do this not only with Escuma's but across the isles, a new work each month within the great room when it is done.

I was saddened to leave, but we eventually did and we shall have to return again. His grace was gifted with a carved turtle shell and Astrid and I both, with strands of pearls, each one so carefully matched.

Relationship Note on Turo

Count Turo Navegant has already proven himself a good friend and member to the Society of Explorers; he came bearing charts and old sailing journals to contribute to the Society's records. Anyone who donates to the shelves has my respect and thanks.

Besides which, it's good to have a sailor in our ranks -- the majority of our members are of the land-locked sort, and it could well prove useful to have access to a ship for some expeditions. Diversity of skills is key to the Society being able to take on a variety of expeditions, after all.

Gods know, I'd never have made it along the coast of the Wastes, or out to that one island in the Mourning Isles, if I hadn't been able to take passage on a ship for a while. And I can only assume there will be a few expeditions that crop up in the Isles and the Saffron Chain -- or even one to venture into the Wastes, someday. Having a ship -- or at least a member with experience sailing one -- could prove vital to those.
